of steam or compressed air and fuel-oil to a hydrocarbon -burner in accordance with the required duty and in such quantities as to insure complete combustion of the fuel, and this irrespective of transitory variations in the pressure of the fluid-regulating medium and wherein no regulation of the valve-controlling devices is necessary other than an initial adjustment suited to particular applications.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for mechanically clarifying the fuel-oil prior to its admittance into the regulating device in order that the action of the latter will be more uniform and to obviate as much as possible the clogging of the apparatus through the accumulations of foreign substances commonly found in the crude oils of commerce.
These and other objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- A Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the valves and connections, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a steam-boiler with my invention attached thereto aswell as the everal pipe connections as ordinarily assem- This invention, as afore alluded to, is not limited to the application of steam alone for the valve-controlling agent nor as the medium with which the combustible is conveyed to the burner; but for convenience and the purpose of removing obscurity from the description I will hereinafter use the word steam to include any fluid suitable to these objects or ends.
In said drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates a casing provided with chambers 2, 3, and 4, in axial alinement with each other and separated by stuffing-boxes 5 and 6.
The chamber 2has an enlarged portion 2 and is divided therein into two compartments by a vibratory diaphragm 7 which is fiXedly connected by a stem 8, passing through said stuffingboxes with a steam regulating valve 9 and an oil-regulating valve 10, respectively, positioned in the chambers 3 and 4. These valves are preferably of the double-beat type and are formed with faces (see Fig. 2) having different slopes or angles of inclination-that is to say, the inclination of the faces of the valve 9 from a vertical line are greater than vthose of the valve 10, and as they are coincidently raised the opening of the former will in consequence vary to a greater degree than will the other. Registering seats 9 and 10 are provided for these valves in removable bush- pieces 11 and 12 of the respective said chambers. Communicative ,connection is made between the source of steam-supply by a pipe 13 entering the chamber 3 at 14, and upon the opposite side of this chamber is an outlet-opening 15, whence the regulated steam is conveyed to the burner (denoted by 16 in Fig. 3) through pipe 17. In like manner the oil-chamber 4 is connected to the source of oil-supply and the said burner by inlet-pipe 18, entering at 19, and a delivery-pipe 20 from the outlet-opening 21. Connection is made vbetween the chamber 2 and the source of steam-supply by a pipe 22, entering upon the side of the diaphragm adjacent of the valves, and through which pipe the steam-controlling fluid is admitted and to act against the diaphragm tends to close the saidvalves. The particular object in connecting this diaphragmchamber by an independent pipe rather than from the adjacent steam-valve chamber is that in the latter the pressure is unstable and fluctuates with every movement of the valve.
Positioned upon the opposite side of the diaphragm is a coil-spring 23, which is adjusted as to its tension by a regulating-screw 24, eX- tended through a screw-threaded aperture 25 of the casing-head 26. A disk plate 27 may advantageously be placed upon the outer end of the s ring to receive and transmit the thrust o said regulating-screw. Perforations 11 and 12 are referably provided in the said bush-pieces or the purpose of permitting small quantities of the 011 and steam to ow continuously to the burner for the purpose of maintaining a small flame at the IOO IOS
orifice of the burner even where the regulating-valves are entirely closed.
Included in the oil-inlet pipe is a filterchamber 28, across which is stretched a finelyperforated strainer or membranous partition 29, whereby the oil is cleansed of dirt or other foreign substances held in suspension. To remove any such accumulations of substances from the partition, I introduce a steam-injection pipe 30 into this filter-chamber upon the side of the partition next to the valve-casing, and upon the opposite side and in proximity of the bottom of this chamber is a draw-off pipe 31, and provide both the injection and draw-off pipes with controlling cocks or valves 32 and 33.
The operation of the fuel and steam regulator will, it is thought, be readily understood by persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains from the foregoing description Without giving a further detailed explanation. It may be mentioned, however, that inasmuch as the oil and steam regulating valves are fixedly connected to a common stem, as is also the controlling-diaphragm which is acted upon by the initial oiler-pressure, and in view of the fact that the steam-controlling valve is constructed to open and closemore rapidly than the oilvalve, though both move as a single piece, the slightest variation of the boilerpressure'will under any contingency admit the two fluids to the burner in quantities corresponding to the demand. For instance, an abnormal pressure of steam acting against the diaphragm will overpower the spring and tend to close the valves, or vice versa, when the steam-pressuredrops below the normal, and the variation in the opening or closing of the steam-valve bein more rapid than that of the other insures t ie flow of steam to the burner at a more accelerated oriretarded rate than does the liquid fuel through the valve of the latter and in reverse proportion to the steam-pressure. In other words, when the steam-pressure is low the device acts to augment the steam generating flame at the burner and when the opposite condition prevails the generating-flame is lessened, thus acting to automatically retain the steampressure within the boiler predeterminately with a minimum consumption of the fuel.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. A device of the class described, comprising, in combination, a casing provided with three non-communicative chambers a1'- ranged one over the other, two of said chambers being provided with valve-seats, valves for said seats, a sin le stem xedly connected to each of the sai valves, a fluid-operated means located in the third chamber and also connected with said valves and adapted to move in unison therewith to open and close the same and means for conveying fluid under substantially stable pressure to said' third chamber.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing provided with two -valve-chambers and a diaphragm-chamber, a diaphragm, two valves, a stem positively connecting the said valves to each other and with said diaphragm, said valve-chambers being provided with inlet and outlet openings, pipes for said openings, an oil-straining device attached to one of the said pipes a steam-injection pipe Yleading into said oilstraining device and a draw-,off pipe leading from the same.
3. A device of the class described, comprising, in combination, a casing, a diaphragm and oil and steam regulating valves positioned in non-communicative chambers of said casing and ixedly connected to a stem, said valves being provided with differently inclined or tapering seating-faces, communicative connection between the steamsupply and the chamber containing said diaphragm, a spring in said chamber positioned upon the opposite side of the diaphragm from the inlet of said steam connection, and means whereby the tension of said spring may be regulated.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with the casing having steam and oil inlet and outlet connections, the diaphragm, the oil and steam valves, a stem fixedly connected to said diaphragm and valves, and a spring; of the strainer-chamber included in said oil-inlet connection and provided with a sediment draw-off opening upon one side of a strainer provided interiorly of the chamber, said strainer, and communicative connection between the said chamber upon the opposite side of said strainer from the draw-off opening and the said steam-inlet connection.
