PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905. J. MILNE.
BOILER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 23. 1905.
INVENTOR Q aww w @MM ATTORNEY,
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed January 23, 1905. Serial No. 242.374.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN MILNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a steam-boiler,
and its organization comprises a pair of drums connected by tubes, all of which are inclosed in a suitable chamber fitted with a furnace. what I term a feed-chamber the interior of which is isolated from the remainder of said drum and into which the ends of some of the boiler-tubes project, as well as the feedpipe for the boiler. A main steam-outlet is connected with one of the drums, or a number of outlet-pipes may extend from the said drum, the ends of the said outlet-pipes being connected to a manifold, from which latter an outlet extends, or the drum may be fitted up with both the said main steam-outlet and said outlet-pipes with the manifold.- The disposition of the tubes is such that they are grouped in nests of one or a plurality of rows. The nests of tubes are sufliciently separated to allow them to be easily cleaned and replaced by virtue of openings covered with doors in the chambers.
Figure .1 represents a vertical section through the center of the boiler. Fig. 2 shows a partial section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 1 and also on the line 00 :13 of the same figure. Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial view of the feedchamber looking in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4is,a section of Fig. 3 on the line 11: x Fig. 5 shows a modified form of feed-chamber in section.
The boiler is shown to comprise the upper or steam drum A, the lower drum B, the cen tral nest of tubes C, and the outer nests of tubes D and E. A main chamber F incloses the said elements, and the said main chamber is -divided into secondary chambers F F I F F by means of the partitions D and E.
Doors 0 cover openings 0 in the walls lead ing to the secondary chambers, and door 0 covers opening 0 in the lower portion thereof. A combustion-chamber G is connected with the main chamber F, and the former is shown with the grates H, furnace-door I ash-pit J, and its door J.
In the lower drum B there is secured with One of the said drums containslatter being held in place withthe bolts K One or more rows of tubes 6 of the nest E eX- I tends into the feed-chamber K, and the upper ends of the said. tubes are connected with the upper drum A. A feed-pipe L leads to the interior of the said feedchamber. A manhole with cover A is fitted up with the drum A, and a manhole with the cover B is fitted to the drum B. The partition D eX- tends up from the lower drum B behind the nest of tubes D, and the partition E extends from the upper drum A in front of the tubes The partition D contains perforations d and the partition E contains perforations e. The said perforations decrease in diameter or area from the lower to the upper ends of said partitions for the purpose of equalizing the heating efiect of the flames and gases, on the entire lengths of the tubes of the boiler.
The upper drum A has the steam-outlet A with the valve A and the outlet-pipes Z, which are connected with the manifold L. The said pipes Z enter the drum at a level of about its longitudinal axis, and at the ends of the pipes Z there are connected the extensions 1, that are pitched upwardly, securing the ends of the latter well up above the waterlevel in the drum A. A pipe Z with the Valve Z connects the upper drum A below the water-line with the manifold L outside of the main chamber F, and from the latter extends the outlet L The lower drum B is supported on bolsters- B, and a blow-off pipe is shown at B When the steam-boiler is in operation, the products of combustion on leaving the combustion chamber take the general course indicated by the arrows, first rising in and about the nest of tubes D in the secondary chamber F, then descending downward around and about the central nest of tubes 0 in the secondary chambers F F then rising again about and around the nest of tubes E v in the secondary chamber F to the outletopening F leading to a stack or smoke connection. While the main portion of the flame and products of combustion are taking the said described course a portion thereof goes directly from the combustion-chamber G to the outlet F through the holes or perforations in the partitions D and E, thereby equalizing the heating effects on the tubes.
The feed-water injected through the pipe L enters the isolated feed-chamber K, ascends through the row of tubes 6 into the upper drum A, and thus the feed-water is brought in contact with the escaping gases, thereby extracting the maximum amount of heat from the said gases and securing a high efficiency for the boiler. The oflice of the piping 1 is to flood the pipes Z with Water previous to the generation of steam to prevent them burning, and this is accomplished by opening the valve Z and allowing the water from the drum A to enter the said row of tubes Z and manifold L.
Various changes may be made in the details of the invention without departing from the spirit of the same. The feed-chamber may be connected with either drum and on the outside in place of the inside thereof. The said feedchamber may be located at the end of either drum, and it may be connected up with a boiler having more than two drums. The partitions may be located so that the gases and products of combustion instead of flowing in vertical courses may be directed to flow in horizontal courses.
The feed-chamb er may consist of a cap M, as shown in Fig. 5, which may be directly bolted to one of the drums by means of studs m.
