Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT MILLS BALEN- TINE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Greenville, county of Greenville, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the head portion of the bed, partly broken away for compactness. Fig. 4 is a detailed vertical section showing more clearly the means for vertically adjusting the, device; Fig. 5, a detailed perspective view of the same devices separated for the purposes of better illustration, and Fig. 6 a detailed perspective of one of the springs employed for holding the operatingshaft in its bearings.

The object of this invention is to provide simple mechanism for holding and adjusting the sham-supporting bar, which mechanism shall be practically hidden behind the headboard of the bed'and shall be ca able of ateadboard, where it will not mar the face of the headboard.

To the accomplishment of these objects and such others as may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter fully described,

.and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in which the same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.

In the drawings, Adesignates a headboard, to the rear face of each corner-post of which is attached a vertical supporting -way B, which is provided with rearward-extending vertical flanges I) and screw-holes b at its ends, said flanges I) being enlarged at b for the purpose of forming bearings for the shaft E, these bearings being slotted, so that the shaft may be readily placed in the bearings and removed'therefrom. Flat springs F, attached at their lower ends to the rear face of the headboard by screws and blocks f serve to normally and removably hold this shaft in its bearings. This shaft extends entirely across the rear face of the headboard and is provided with a milled operating-wheel e at one end and between each pair of ears I) with an elastic friction-wheel e.

The friction-wheels. 6 each bears resiliently upon the transversely-serrated face 0 of a vertical bar 0, this bar lying and fitting within the way formed between the vertical flanges b on each of the supporting-bars.

Attached to the outer side edge of each bar C at the upper end thereof is a bracket-arm c, which extends forward to a point in front of the headboard and has its extremity bent upward to engage in a hole (1 formed in the adjacent end of a bar D, which bar extends across in front of the headboard and is provided with the sharp pins (Z to engage and support the shams S. The lower end of each bar 0 is enlarged at c to prevent the bar from being raised high enough to slip from under the elastic friction-wheel.

It will be observed that by simply turning the shaft E by the thumb-wheel 'e the shamcarrying bar may be raised or lowered. It

will be observed that all the mechanism for raising and lowering the sham-holder is located on the rear face of the headboard ,where it will be out of the way, and it will be seen also that this mechanism is of such a character that it will not be readily injured by being jammed against the wall. It will be seen also that the mechanism I employ is very simple and inexpensive in construction and that it may be applied to any bedstead and that its application to the bedstead will not in the least mar the front of the headboard.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a bedstead, a pair of vertical ways attached to the rear side of the headboard thereof, a vertically-movable bar arranged to slide in each of these ways, means for raising and lowering said bars, bracket-arms carried by said bars and extending around to a point in front of the headboard, and a sham-carrying bar supported on these bracket-arms, substantially as set forth.
