J. E. SCOTT. DUST EXCLUDING DEVICE FOR-WINDOW SASHBS.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 20, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES JAMES E. scorr, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY. DUST-EXCLUDING DEVICE FOR WINDOW'PSASHES- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application filed. June 20, 1905- Serial No. 266,198-
To all whom it may concern:
. State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Dust Excluding Devices for Window-Sashes; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescrlption of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to-the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
.Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a window frame and sash having'my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a corner of a window-sash having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the strip 65 without the extenslons or lugs 10.
The invention relates to dust-excluding devices for window-sashes; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth. v
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the sash Way or groove of the window-frame b, and c a portion of thesash-frame adapted to move in said groove. The groove a of the window-frame is made larger than the sashbar in cross-section in order to allow for'the lnterposition of a metallic strip d. This stri d is designed to be made of spring sheet meta but longitudinally in such wise as to provide a laterally-expanded portion or bead e, merging by its inner face into an inner plate j, having a terminal flange g, extending along its edge at right angles to its general plane. Exteriorly the bead e is rentrant to provide a shoulder-bearing at hparallel t0 the flange g and from which an oblique spring-bearingwing-plate 7c extends, said wingplate being a little broader than the inner platef, so as to extend beyond the terminal flange g of said inner plate. The terminal flange g, as shown, terminates at each end a little short of the end of the plate j, and when seated in a longitudinal slot m of the'sash-bar the ends of said terminal flange form stop-shoulders engaging the ends of said slot and serving to lation to the sash-bar. When the sash is placed in the sashway, the spring-strips bearing by their exterior wings against the Walls of the sashway serve not only to provide proper friction-contact to hold the sash in place and to prevent ingress of dust, but also to hold the flanges of the strips in the bearing-slots of the sash-bar. When, however, some fastening is desirable, the ends of the metallic strip maybe provided with rightangular extensionsor lugs p, which are perforated and secured to the ends of the sashbar by suitable screws, as at s.
The spring bearing-strips having been connected to the sash-bar by seating the terminal flanges in the slots of said bar, the sash is placed in position in the window-frame. In this position the outer wings of the strips are designed to extend well -into the sashway, usually beyond the edge of the sash-bar, and the bearing-shoulders h of the beads bear against the margins of the sashway. In this manner it is designed to provide an easymoving'sash which is protected by dustroof spring-bearings which facilitate thea justment of the sash in position in the sashway. Movement of the weather-strip inward is resisted by the contact of shoulder h with the window-framing, and movement thereof in the reverse direction or outward is resisted by the terminal flange g.
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a dust-excluding device for windowhold the strip from-moving lengthwise in resashes, the combination with a sash having a having end stop-walls, said terminal flange engaging the slot of the sash, substantially as specified.
p 2. In a dust-excluding device for windowsashes, the combination with asash having a slot provided with end abutment-walls, of a sheet-metal strip having a longitudinal bead provided with a bearing-shoulder, an outer bearing-wing, and an inner plate having a terminal flange of less length than said inner In testimony whereof I affix my signature plate, parallel to said bearing-shoulder, and in presence of two Witnesses. having end stop-Walls, said terminal flange engaging the slot of the-sash, and said inner JAMES SCOTT 5 plate having perforated right-angle end lugs Witnesses:
for engagement With the ends of the sash- SAML. A. LEDERMAN,
frame, substantially as specified. ALFRED HEN HITE.
