IRA L. CADY, OF NElVPORT, NINV YORK.
COMPOUND METALLIC DOOR FOR VAULTS, SAFES, &o.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,062, dated April 29, 1851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA L. CADY, of Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Making Iron Doors, Iron Chests, and Iron lValls for Vaults of Banks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the manner of making the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a door in perspective, Fig. 2 the same with the front. plate oif showing the space to be filled with cast iron. A, is the back plate with the holes for the rivets, B is the rim or curb between the plates; C, G, the spaces through which the molten iron is poured to fill the space between the front plate C, and the back plate A. Fig. 3 section, showing the manner of inserting the rivet D, through the front plate E and back plate A, Fig. 4 is one of the rivets of full size with the largest end out to prevent them from being driven through if the heads were cut off.
The nature of my invention consists in making an iron door, wall or chest with common wrought iron and white hard cast iron chilled, which makes it so hard it cannot be drilled or cut, and I make it as follows: I take two plates of Wrought iron each one quarter of an inch thick, and the size I wish to make the door, I place between the ends and one edge a bar of iron five eighths of an inch square, bent to correspond with the shape of the door, leaving one edge open at C, C, and rivet the two plates together through this bar, I then pass the rivet D, through both plates (at short distances apart) as shown at Fig. 3. I then pack the whole in molding sand with the open edge C, C, up and pour it full of molten iron, using what is called the white, hard cast iron, pouring it at a low heat, just sufiicient for it to run well, and it becomes chilled between the two plates, leaving the cone shaped rivets I), passing through solid metal one inch and one eighth in thickness, and riveted on the inside. Iron chests, and walls, I make in the same manner filling the space between with the molten iron.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A door, or wall for a vault or safe, made by securing to each other, at a certain distance apart, two plates of sheet metal, provided with a rim or curb and filling the vacant space between them with immaleable cast iron poured in while melted, substantially in the manner herein described.
