Be it known that I, ANNIE E. W. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber-Holdingin g is a specification.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a holder which is made out of metal, preferably sheet metal of a suitable thickness. Said holder comprises a smooth cylindrical part 2,

The part 2 of the holder is secured to the end of the pencil in any suitable manner, as by means of a stem6, screwed through a hole in said cylindrical portion and having a milled head 7, by which it can be turned, the inner end of the screw having a foot 8 to press the pencil firmly against the circular holding portion 2 of the holder and clamp the same.
The eraser consists of a piece of rubber 5 cylindrical in form, and is inserted in the portion'4 of the holder, being firmly clamped therein by means of a nut 9, which is screwed on the threaded portion' t of the holder. The plate is retained within the holder by the shoulder 13 thereof. This spring expands and presses out the rubber when permittedto do so by unscrewing the nut 9. Atthe same time the plate or disk 12 being retained within the holder serves to retain any irregularlyshaped eraser within the holder and prevent its entire extrusion therefrom.

A device of the character described, comprising a holder having a threaded portion adapted to receive the rubber and having a plurality of slits extending inwardly from the rubber-holding end of the holder to a point near the opposite end of the threaded portion, and having a groove at the rubber-holding v.end forming an inwardly-extending shoulder adapted to firmly grasp the rubber without cutting, a nut screwed on said. threaded portion, and means forsecuring the holder to the end of a pencil, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described,'comprising a holderhaving a threaded portion adapted to receive the rubber and having a clamping a pieceof rubber and having a shoulder, a plate retained within the holder between the shoulder and the end of the pencil and a spring secured. at one end to said plate and at the other end to said rubber, substantially as described.
