Specification of Letters Patent.

v Application filed January 28,-1905- Serial No. 243,137-
had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in saws, and more'particularly to meat-saws and saws having detachable cutting-blades.
The object of this invention is the provision of novel means whereby a saw-blade can beeasily and quickly detached from a saw-body when it is desired and means whereby when the blade is mounted within the saw-body it can be adjusted therein.
Briefly described, our improved saw consists of a body portion in which a saw-blade is adapted to be mounted. To secure the sawblade within the body portion, we slot the depending ends of the saw-body and provide the one end of the saw-body withlugs which are adapted to engage in grooves formed in the end of the saw-body, adjacent to the end thereof. To secure the opposite end of the sawblade within the saw-body, we provide a sawbody with a recess adjacent to its slot and provide the end of the saw-blade with a lug that is adapted to seat within said recess. A
set-screw is mounted in the saw-body to engage the lug, whereby the saw-blade may be '5 is a vertical sectional view of one end of the saw-body, illustrating the adjustable feature of our improvod saw; and Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of one end of the saw-body, illustrating a saw-blade mounted therein.
In the accompanying drawings we have blade.
illustrated our invention as applicable to a meat-saw, comprising a body portion 1, having depending ends 2 and 3, and tothe depending end .is secured a suitable handle 4.
The reference-numeral 5 designates a sawblade constructed in accordance with our 1nvention, and by referring to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings it will be observed that the end 6 of the saw-blade is providedwith a pin having outwardly-extending ends 7 7, while the opposite end of the saw-blade is provided with an enlarged portion, forming a lug 8. To secure the saw-blade within the depending ends 2 and 3 of the saw-body, we have pro-' vided the ends of the saw-body with slots 9 and 10, and upon the edge of the depending end 2 of the saw-body we provide recesses 11 11, which are adapted to receive the ends 7 7 of the pin carried by the end 6 of the saw By referring to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be observed that when the saw blade is placed within the slot 9 the ends 7 7 of'the pin bear within the recesses 11 11 and retain the saw-blade within the slot 9, preventing any vertical movement of the blade within the slot. The depending end 3 of the saw-body adjacent to the slot 10 is provided with a recess 12, in which the lug 8 seats when thesaw is mounted in the slot 10 ofthe saw-body. I
The reference-numeral 14 designates a setscrew which is mounted in the oneedge of the saw-body to engage the lug 8, carried-by the saw-blade, and this set-screw is provided with an apertured head 15, whereby the setscrew can be easily rotated to adjust the sawblade within the body portion of the saw.
On account of the construction of the saw body it is possible to slightly spring the same when it is desired to mount the saw-blade 5 within the body portion of the saw.
After the end of the saw-blade carrying the lug 8 has been placed within the slot 10 and the lug seated within the recess 12 the opposite end of the blade is forced downwardly within the slot 9 of the depending end 2, and the instant the ends 7 7 of the pin pass into the recesses 11 11 the saw-blade will be retained within the saw-body. Should it be desired to more firmly hold the saw-blade within the saw-body, the'set-screw 14 is rotated, which will force the lug 8,. outwardly toward the open end of the recess 15, this operation causing the saw-blade to be held more taut and rigid within the saw-body. By having the lug 8 formed on one side of the saw-blade the opposite side of the saw-blade has a firm even bearing on the wall of the recess 12, and the blade is thereby prevented from assuming a position at an angle to the wall of this recess under the pressure of the screw 14.
After the saw-blade has been once secured withinthe saw-body it will be impossible for the same to become detached during the use of the saw, as the downward pressure upon the saw has a tendency to force the saw-blade farther into the slots 9 and 10 of the sawbody, consequently retaining the saw-blade within the saw-body.
While we have herein illustrated the detachable saw-blade as being used in connection with a meat-saw, we desire it to be understood that other saws, such as steel saws and jig-saws, can be readily constructed in accordance with our invention.
slots, a lug carried by the opposite end of said saw-blade and adapted to seat in said recess, the side of the saw opposite said lug bearing against the wall of the slot opposite sald recess, and means to secure said sawblade within said slots, substantially as described.
2. Inasaw of the type described, the combination with a body portion having depending ends, said ends having slots formed therein, the wall of one of said slots having a recess formed therein, of a saw-blade, a pin carried by the one end of said saw-blade and adapted to engage the edges of one of said slots, a lug carried by the opposite end of said saw-blade and adapted to seat in said recess, the side of the saw opposite said lug bearing against the wall of the slot opposite said recess, a setscrew carried by said saw-body, and adapted to bear against said lug whereby said lug can be adjusted within said recess, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In adevice of the type described, the 00111- bination with a saw-blade having a transversely-disposed pin at one end and having an integral lug on one side of its opposite end, of a body portion having slotted depending ends, one of said ends being formed with an enlargement on one side and a recess in said enlargement adapted to receive the lug on the sawblade, the side of the saw opposite said lug bearing against the wall of the slot opposite said recess, a set-screw passing through one side of said enlarged portion alongside of the saw-blade and bearing against the inner end of said lug, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
