Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MARSHALL. a citizen of the United States, residing at N ew castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expanding-Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in expanding-punches especially adapted for expanding and shaping metallic shell vessels.-
It has for its object to provide a device of this nature which is capable of giving the shell the desired shape without the use of an outside die.
The invention consists in thedetails of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In-the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is aside elevation of the device with the plunger-frame removed, the relation of the shell to the punch being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view with the plunger orwedge raised and the plunger-frame in position, also indicatingthe relation of the shell to the punch in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a broken view with the wedge or plunger down and the plunger-frame removed, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line at w of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in carrying out my invention 1 provide a base-plate 1, having an upwardly-extending flange 2 to receive the lower edge of the sheetmetal Shelli). The inner surface of said flange is preferably beveled to permit the lower edge of the shell to conform to the curve given said shell by the punch, as shown in Fig. 3. The punch proper consists of a rod or standard 4, preferably screw threaded to a casting 5, shaped like aninverted Tin cross-section, the head or flange 6 adapted to fit into the flange of the base-plate 1. Around said standard and the stem of said casting is slidably mounted a tubular member 7, having its lower end wedge-shaped, as at 8, with a shoulder or stepped portion 9 at, the top of said wedge. Blocks 10 of steel or other hard metal are arranged around said wedge and casting 5.,with their lower ends resting upon the flange 6 and their upper ends covered by a ring-plate 11, fitting around the tubular member 7. Said blocks have their inner sides cut out or beveled to correspond with the wedge, said beveled surfaces extending half their length equidistant from each of their ends and ending at the upper end in ashoulder 12. The depth of said out or beveled recess is preferably equal to the distance'the shoulder 9 projects from the tubular member 7, so that when the wedge is raised so that the shoulders 9 and 12 engage each other and the blocks are drawn in they will fit closely to said wedge, tubular member, and casting, makingacompact, solid body. Coiled springs 13, housed in circumferential grooves 14, one'at the top and another at the bottom of said blocks, tend to collapse said blocks around the center when the wedge is raised. The rod 4 carries a nut or knob 15 on its upper end, against which the tubular portion 7 abuts as it is raised, whereby the parts are retained assembled and the punch may be carried from place to place by grasping said tubular piece, as well as raised from a shell after it has been operated upon. The outer surface or contour of said blocks may be of any desired shape that it is wished to make the shell, and different sets of blocks with various-shaped outer surfaces may be used with the same standard, wedge, and baseplate, the substitution being easily effected by raising the plate 11, removing the spring in the upper groove, when one set may be removed and another put in. Said plate 11 serves to retain the upper spring 14 in its groove as the blocks 10 are forced outward and also to hold the upper portion of the shell in place. It has the further advantage of shielding said spring from dirt, dust, or other foreign matter which might clog its coils. A plunger-frame 16 shown in Fig. 3 and having a central passage for the nut or knob on the standard is arranged over the upper end of the tubular member 7 and is adapted to grasp the same by means of a bolt or rivet 17. Said plungerframe may be at tached to and operated by any suitable mechanism adapted to impart thereto a reciprocating motion.
In operation the shell to be shaped is placed with its lower edge resting upon the base-plate within the flange 2. The punch is then lowered into said shell with the wedge up, and when adjusted at the desired point the wedge is forced down, pressure being applied at the upper end of the tubular member 7 by the plunger-frame 16 forcing the blocks 10 outward uniformly all around and pressing the shell into the shape of the outer surfaces of said blocks. The pressure of the spreading-blocks upon the sides of the shell or vessel as they are being expanded causes said sides to draw up the lower edge of the shell until it conforms to the. level of the plate 6, thus producing the expanded shell or vessel with continuous curved sides. When the wedge is raised, the shoulders thereon will engage those on the blocks, so that the punch may be raised out of the shell by grasping the tubular member.
I am aware that changes may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof. I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the character described having a standard with an outwardly extending flange at its lower end, blocks arranged around said standard, and resting upon said flange, a cover-plate for said blocks, a wedgeshaped plunger carried by a tubular member mounted around said standard, said wedge having a shoulder at its upper extremity and said blocks having a beveled cut-out portion ending in a shoulder, whereby, when the wedge is raised, the shoulders on the wedge will engage the shoulders on the blocks, whereby said blocks may be raised with the wedge by grasping said tubular member.
