Description

PATENTED APR. 22 1851. W. STREVELL & '1). BROWN. MACHINE FOR STBETGHING LEATHER.
WM. STREVELL AND DANL BROWN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR STRETCHING LEATHER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,054, dated April 22, 1851 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM STREVELL and DANIEL BROWN, of the city of Albany,
State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement upon the Appae ratus for Splitting and Stretching Leather, which was appended to the Letters Patent that was issued to Bradford Row'e on the th day of April, 1850, on the 10th day of September, 1850; and we declare the following specification, with the drawings hereto appended as part of the same, to be a full and accurate description thereof.
Figure 1 represents the perspective view of one end of thestretching apparatus as shown in Fig. 1of the drawing appended to and being part of the specification of said improvement, viz,, the free rod 1, 1, with the clamp 2. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the same being the upper surface of the free-rod and a section of the-clamp in the plane of said upper surface of the rod.
a In making the apparatus which we propose to improve the rod 1, 1, is firmly secured by tenon and mortise, or some equivalent method at right angles to the clamp. Our
improvement consists in securing them to each other by entering the end or tenon of the said. rod 1, 1 into 'a'mortise with angular sides or checks a-b so as to enable the clamp to have its position changed in reference to the rod andnot be kept permanently at right angles thereto. The rod being secured to the clamp by a pivot pin 79.
The object of this improvement is, whenever material (as belting leather) whose fibers possess different tensile properties in the direction of their length, are subjected to the operation of stretching, the more yielding parts on one side of the center of the rod may receive the greater stretch, by the drawing down of the side of the clamp which is on the other side of the center by the less yielding parts of the material.
We claim- The construction of the stretching apparatus by connecting the free rod, to the clamp by entering the end-or tenon of the rod into a mortise with angular sides, and securing them together by a pivot pin, substantially as set forth in this specification.
