Be it known that we, JOHN MALoY and ALoIs TRENKER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Dunbar, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glands for Stufling-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in glands for stuffingboxes; and the object of this invention is to provide a gland of two parts which will facilitate the operation of packing a stuffing-box.
In combination with ourim proved two-part stuiingbox we have provided novel means for interlocking the two parts of our im proved stuffing-box in such a manner that they can be readily separated when it is desired.
Brieiiy described, our improved gland com-v prises two parts or sections, the confronting faces of which are provided with tongues and grooves adapted to interlock and hold the two parts of our improved gland together. The shaft-opening is formed centrally within' the gland by the two parts thereof, also the openings through which bolts pass to secure the gland upon a stuiing-box.
The above construction, together with the i details thereof, will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and, referring to the drawings aocompanying this application, like numerals ofv reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of our improved gland. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sanne; and Fig. 3 is-a side elevationl of our improved gland, illustrating one of the parts thereof partly separated.
To put our invention into practice We have formed our improved gland of two parts or sections l and 2, and each section carries a substantially semicylindrical portion 3, and when the parts of our improved gland are assembled the portions 3 3 form a collar.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated our improved stufling-box as being substantially oval in top plan view; but we do not care to confine ourselves to this specic shape, as the construction which we employ can be readily embodied in different-shaped stufiing-boxesfrom that illustrated. The confronting faces t and 5`of the parts l and 2, respectively, are provided near their outer ends with substantially semicircular grooves 6 6, which form openings when the two parts of our improved gland are assembled, and through said openings are adapted to pass the fastening means, such as bolts, that are employed for securing the gland to the stuffingbox. The confronting faces 4 of the part l are provided with aplurality of substantially wedge -shaped tongues 7 7 and 8 8. rlhe tongues 8 8 are formed upon each side of the central opening 9 of our improved gland and preferably in vertical alinement with the semicylindrical portion 3 of the part l. The tongues 7 7 are vertically disposed intermediate the tongues 8 and the semicircular grooves 6 of the part 1. Ve preferably form the tongues 7 slightly larger than the tongues 8, as clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.
The confronting faces 5 of the part 2 of our improved glandare provided with aplurality of substantially wedge-shaped grooves 10 l0 and 1l l1, and these grooves are adapted to receive the tongues 7 7 and 8 8 of the part l, said grooves being formed in the part 2 diametrically opposite the tongues carried by the part 1. The tongues 7 7 and 8 8 of the part l are adapted to seat within the grooves l0 l0 and ll l1 of the part 2 and retain the parts of our improved gland together, whereby the semicylindrical portions 3 3 of our improved gland and the semicircular grooves 6 6 thereof will register and form the necessary openings when the parts of our improved gland are assembled.
It will be observed that the parts of our improved gland can be easily and quickly assembled and that by separating the same it will be an extremely simple matter to pack a stuffing-box in connection with which our improved gland is used. While we have herein illustrated the tongues and grooves as being formed substantially wedge-shaped, whereby they will interlock, we do not care to confine ourselves to this specific form of interlocking means, as headed pins, bayonet-shaped connections, and the like can be readily employed to accomplish the purpose desired.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of the invention.
