Description

JAMES BRUCE, OF DENRSON, TEXAS.
SWAB-HDLBER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
i iimiun filed November 13,1905. Serial No. 287.638.
To all whom it Hwy, concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES Bacon, a ci izcn of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Swab-Holders, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in swab-holders, and has for its object the provision of a device for use in connection with piston-rods and the like for the lubrication of the same.
The device consists, essentially, of a sectional box or cup which may be filled with Waste or other like fibrous material to retain a lubricating-oil and furnish aswab for thereciprocatingpiston-rodwhichpassestherethrough to reduce friction and wear on the piston-rod and bearings by cleansing the same of dust, dirt, and the like and maintaining the said piston-rod in a lubricated condition.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device showing the invention applied to a horizontal piston-rod. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a packing-gland having the improved swab-holder secured thereto, and Fig. 3 is a rear face view of a clamping member which will be hereinafter described.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
It will be noted from an inspection of the drawings that the swab holder or cup is a complete attachable and detachable device in itself and may be applied for use or Withdrawn for refillin or readjustment at will.
In the form of the device illustrated the numeral 18 designates a piston-rod passing through a land 19, which is adapted to compress a pee ing in a stu -hox by bolts 21 and 22 in the usual and Wel known manner. The bolts 21 and 22 pass throu h slots 23 and 24, formed in clamping rnem are 25 and 26. Clam ing members 25 and 26 are rovided with anges 27 and 28 which overap and engage flanges 29 and 30, formed upon a swab-holder 31. As is best illustrated in Fig. 1, this swab-holder comprises a twopart casing composed of sections 36 and 37, each of these sections comprising an annular wall 38 and cap- plates 39 and 48. An opening 41, formed in each of the cap-plates, pernuts the passa e of piston-rod 18 through the casing. Annu ar flanges 42, formed integral with the cap-plates, surround the opening 41. Ears 43, having openings 44 formed therethrough, lie in contact with each other when the casing is closed and are bound together by a bolt 45. An openin 46, formed insec tion 36 of casing 31, provides an entrance for lubricating-oil. A swab 47, composed of Waste or other fibrous material, swabs or lubricates pistonrod 18 as it reciprocates through gland 19. Sections 36 and 37 of the casing are his ed together, as at 48.
B virtue the construction set forth if it be esircd to remove casing 31 for the purpose of inserting new waste therein it is but necessa to slightly loosen bolts 21 and 22. This will permit clamping members and 26 to be withdrawn from engagement with flan es 29 and 30. The casing Ina then be readily moved alon the piston-re and the bolt 45 removed. The hinge-section of the casing may then be swung apart to free the same of the piston-rod and permit the ready removal of the waste 47.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A swab-holder comprising a hinged sectional casing, a central opening formed through said casing, rentrant flanges forming the walls of said opening, an outwardlq extending annular flange and a removab e clamping member adapted to hook over and engage said flange to retain the device in position upon a piston-rod.
2. The combination with a bin ed sectional casing, comprising semicircu ar side walls, end walls having a central opening formed therethrou h, reentrant flanges forming the walls of sai opening, one of said end walls having an annular flange which extends beyond the side wall of the casing, of clamping members adapted to engage said flange to thereby clamp the device in position upon a piston-rod.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BRUCE.
