Lettro Pdteni No. 80,519, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
T o ALL WHOM IT MAY.ONCEBN:
Be it known chat I, WILLIAM TOTHEROH, of Reading, in the couuty of.Berks, in the State of Pennsylvania,
. have invented a new and improved Bnrner for Goal-Cil and otiir Lamps; and I do hereby dedlare that the foilowing is a=full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters 6freference marked therepn, making part of this specifi'cation- Figure 1 being au elevation. showing the fans or guards for promoting combustion, the chimne-sppbrt, and the wick-tube,and
Figure 2 being a bac]: elevation of the same. Similar letters-refer fio similar parts in both views. Instead of introducing the air to the flame thiough a perforated plate, as usual, I dispense with il? and the centre web for upporting the chimney, and substitte for them a raised baud or ring, A, supported on the base, B, of the burnefby two or adore legs a a, so that the air may have a free and unix1terrupted pass to..the
flame. Thwick-tube 6 is soldered aiptight in the body of the Iamp-burner to preent its overfiow frbm carrying .the fiame into the Iamp, and thereby e ploding it. 'Io assis}; in inserting the wick into the tube, I fix a spread or inwardIy-"curVihg Wing c 130 ifs lower end.
Fixed to tbe inner side of the ring A are the three-sided uprights C C, on'e on each side of the wik-tube,
paralle] with its sides. DD are two outwardlcurying defiectors attached to the uprigh'ts C C, and so placed as to lean over-the edges of th tube, the one top being raised slightly above that of the other. The object of this arrangement is to deflect the current of aif, and direct it against the fiame, So as to rendercombustion more intense, giving a brighter, whiter, steadier flame, and cdnsuming the fuel so comf letely thata considerabl saving of oil ieflected theieby. An important advantage gained by using an open ring, A, for carrying the chimney, is that an even temperature, both inside and outside, is had,'thereby preventing any ;sudden influx of 001d air, or increasebf t'ne temporature within the chimney, from 'breaking it, by causing the glass to contract unequally.
T0 obviate the necessity of unsorewing thc burner from the lamp eery time in reduires replenishing with cil, I provide it with a filling-tube, E, begiixning in a funne-shped mouth, and extending below the wick-tube in the lamp.
F is a ring or band, ivliich is secured to a ring, G, \v hich tzikes over the ringA, by the'curved arms H E, &c. I 'is a giobe, whioh resbs'on the said curved arms, and prevente d fzom moving horizontaily by the said The chimney J and the globe I being entirely open at their lower ends il: is not requisite that either shouid be removed while lighting the lump. Fire can be applied to the wick f1 om beneath.
What I ciaim as my i'nvntiou, and desire to scoute by Letters Patent, is-
1. The uprights C C, defiectors D D, x ing A, rings or bauds F and G, and the amas H, when combined and arranged a; shown and described.
2. The uprights 0 C, deflectors D D, ring A, base, 13, filling-tube E, Wick-tub 6, and the outwardly-curving wing et guide 0, When combined and arranged as shown.
Intestimony whereof, I hereunto sign. my name to this, specification in presence of two subsoribing witnesses.
WILLIAM TOTHEROII.
