Be it known that I, CLAYTON C. HARTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodstock, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-W'riter Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improved features of construction in the paper-carriage of a type-writing machine adapted to permit the removal of the platen or paper-roller from the carriage and its disconnection from the devices by which the said platen is automatically turned or actuated for line-spacingin order to permit the substitution for the ordinary smooth platen, when desired, of a special platen provided with means for holding or clamping cards thereon, thereby enabling either an ordinary smooth platen or such special platen provided with card-holding means to be employed in connection with the same paper-carriage.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims. f-
In the accompanyingdrawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a plan view of a paper-carriage constructed generally like the paper-carriage of the type-writing machine known as the "Oliver machine. Fig. 2 is an end View ofthe carriage,showing the righthand end thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the carriage, taken upon line 3 3 of Fig. 1. E and F are the upper and lower front guide-rollers, which are located in front of the carriage and mounted at their ends in yieldingly-supported yoke-pieces G G.
G G indicate the endwise-movable actuating-bars applied to the outer faces of the end plates A Al and which operate on the yokepieces G G in shifting the guide-rollers E and F toward and from the platen, said bars G' being operated by a rock-shaft G2, provided with a handle g, by which said rockshaft is turned.
I indicates a guide-plate located between the rollers D and E, I a guide-plate located between the rollers E and F, and J a scale-strip which is mounted on the upper ends of the yoke-pieces G G and extends over the upper part of the platen adjacent to and in front of the printing-line.
K indicates a framebar which extends lengthwise of the carriage above the upper paper-guide C and at the rear of the platen and which supports the guide-fingers K K', which extend from said bar K forwardly over the platen, and the oblique paper-guides K2 K2, which are attached to said lingers.
L indicates the platen, and L a part or section of the platen-shaft, to which the platen isfattached and which extends from the righthand end of said platen and is provided with the usual knob L2 for turning the platen and has bearing in the end frame-plate A at the At the lefthand end of said platen the platen-shaft L terminates a short distance from the platen and at a point inside the end plate A. Said left-hand end of the platen-shaft L is adapted for interlocking engagement with a separate section L3 of the platen-shaft, which is mounted in the left-hand frame-plate A and is provided with the usual ratchet-wheel L1, which forms part of the devices for automatically turning the platen for line -spacing The drawings illustrate portions only of said de- IOO Vice for so turning the platen for automatic line-spacing, the parts illustrated consisting of an oscillating gear-segment M, mounted on the outer end of the platen-shaft L3` and a second gear-segment M, mounted on the adjacent end of the main f rame-bar A3. rlhe said line-spacing devices constitute no part of the present invention and are not shown in full in the accompanying drawings.
The shaft-section L3 is shown as provided inside of the end plate A with a collar l, which is secured to said shaft-section L3 with its outer end in contact with the inner face of said frame-plate and which serves to hold the said shaft-section from endwise movement on the frame-plate.
The device illustrated for affording detachable connection of the right-hand part L of the platen-shaft with the section L3 thereof consists, as shown in the drawings, of a fiatsided endwise projection Z on the end of the part L of the shaft and a transverse slot or notch Zi in the end of the shaft-section L3, adapted to receive said projection l. Any other form of interlocking or interfitting parts on the shaft-sections L and L3 may be employed in place of that shown, it merely being necessary that the parts shall so intertit or interlock as to prevent relative rotative movement of the parts` or, in other words, to insure the turning of the said sections L and L3 of said shaft with each other.
The bearing in the right-hand end plate A for the right-hand section L of the platenshaft is adapted for the removal of said section of the shaft from and its insertion into said bearing, said bearing for this purpose being, in effect, a two-part bearing, one part of which is permanently attached to or formed on the end plate itself and the other part of which is formed by a movable element vor member adapted to be moved or shifted to release the shaft from the bearing. In theparticularconstruction of thc parts herein shown the said bearing in the frame-plate A' consists of an upwardly-facingconcave bearinga, constituting the bottom of a U-shaped notch in the upper margin of the end plate A, as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 7, and a pivoted detent or latchplate N, which is located on the inner face of the end plate and connected at a point below the upwardly-facing bearing` a by a horizontal pivot a and is provided with an arm N, having a downwardly-facing contact-surface for contact with the shaft and adapted to be brought over the shaft by the swinging of said latch, so as to confine the shaft in the said bearing. Said latch N is shown as probearing-recess a.
platen is engaged with the inner end of the shaft-section L3 when the platen is in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 4. The platen is then lowered until the shaft L is engaged with the said bearing a and the latch N then thrown over the shaft into its holding position, as shown in Fig. 7.
The platen illustrated is one provided with a holding device for the edges of cards or the like and for this purpose is provided with a strip O of metal secured longitudinally of the surface of the platen by means of fasteningscrews and provided with an overhanging flange or lip 0, between which and the adjacent yielding portions of the rubber covering of the platen beneath it the forward edge of a card may be inserted, said lip extending forwardly or toward the front of the machine when the strip O is at the top of the platen. Said strip 0, with its lip 0, operates to hold or clamp the forward edge of the card on the platen in the same manner as the like strips heretofore used-that is to say, when the platen is turned to bring the strip O to its upper surface the upper or forward edge of the card is inserted beneath said lip 0 and the platen then turned in its feeding direction, so as to carry the said forward end of the card first downwardly beneath the platen and then forwardly and 'upwardly until it reaches its position for printing, the clamping or holding device serving to confine the top or advance edge of the card against the platen during the progress of -printing and to hold the card in place on the platen until the printing is completed. By reason of the presence of the paper-fingers K' K the platen cannot be removed from its place in the carriage unless the said guideiingers are removed from their operative position. I have shown in thevaccompanying drawings a construction enabling the paperguide lingers to be removed from over the platen in which the bar K withA the said arms is made detachable from the carriage-frame. To this end I provide means for. detachably securing said frame-bar to the end plates A and A', devices for this purpose being alike at both ends of the carriage and being constructed as follows: In the upper margins of said frame-plates4 A and A are formed upwardly-opening notches a3 a3, adapted to receive the end of the frame-bar, which latter is made long enough to extend beyond the outer faces of said frame-plates. In the particular construction shown the bar K is square in cross-section and the notches A3 are rectangular in form to correspond with the shape of the bar. For holding or locking the ends of the bar in said notches I employ two latches I) P, which are pivoted, by means of pivot-studs y) p', to the outer faces of said end frame-plate, said pivot-studs being located below the notches. engage the ends of the bar K when the latches are thrown into position to bring said arms over said ends of the bar, which latter are preferably provided in their upper surfaces with transverse notches ,7c 7c to receive the said arms 292193. For convenience in moving or actuating the latches P P the same are shown as provided with upwardly-extending arms P2 P3, which rise above the upper edges of the plates in position convenient for the grasping of the same by the tingers of the operator. rPhe upper ends of the arms P2 P3 are preferably bent inwardly over the upper edges of the frame-plate and form stops to limit the swinging movement of the latches.
The construction described in the means for detachably securing the ends of the bar K to the end frame-plate enables the said bar to be easily and quickly removed and replaced on the carriage, the removal of the bar being accom plished by merely swinging the upper ends of the latches P and P until the same are free from the bar and then lifting the bar from its place. The bar may be replaced on the carriage by inserting the ends thereof in the notches a2 a3 and then swinging the latches P and P' into locking engagement with the bar. Instead of' making the said bar K removable from the end plates of the carriage-frame for the purpose of removing the guide-ngers K K' from their usual or normal position the end of' said bar K may be pivoted in the end plates and provision made for locking the bar from turning when in its normal position, such as is shown, for instance, in Fig. 8, wherein the bar is provided outside of one end of thel end plates with an arm 7a2, adapted for engagement with a spring-detent K3, having a shoulder 7c3 in position for contact with the arm if when the guide-fingers K K are in their forward or normal position. By pressing down the free end of the spring-detent K3 until the shoulder thereof is free from the arm lf2 the shaft K will be released, so that the fingers K' K may be thrown upwardly and backwardly out of" the path of the platen during its removal from the carriage.
I claim as my invention" l. rlfhe combination with a carriage, of a platen shaft section which is permanently mounted in one end of the carriage, said carriage being provided at its opposite end with a bearing for the adjacent end of' the platenshaft, made in two parts, one of which is movable to permit the insertion and removal of the platen-shaft.
2. The combination with a paper-carriage, of a platen provided with a permanently-attached platen-shaft extending from one end thereof, a platen-shaft section permanently mounted in one end ofthe carriage-frame, the said platen and platen-shaft section being provided with interlocking parts, the opposite end of the carriage-frame being provided with a two-part bearing, one part of' which is movable to permit the insertion and removal of the said permanently-attached platen-shaft.
3. The combination with a paper-carriage having end frame-plates, of a platen-shaft section permanently mounted in the left-hand plate of the carriage, a platen having a permanently attached platen shaft extendin-g from the right-hand end thereof, said platen and the platen-shaft on the left-hand end plate having interlocking parts, the end plate at the right-hand end of' the carriage being provided with an upwardly-opening bearing-seat for the permanently-attached platen-shaft at the right-hand end of the platen', and a hinged latch 0n the said right-hand end plate for confining the said platen-shaft within said bearing-seat.
4. The combination with a paper-carriage and a removable platen therein, of paper-guide fingers which extend normally over the platen, and means for holding said fingers in operative position adapted for the release ofthe fingers and their removal from such operative position to permit the taking out of the platen.
The combination with a paper-carriage and removable platen, of paper-guide fingers which normally extend over the platen and a supporting-bar for said fingers having detachable connection with the carriage-frame.
6. The combination with a paper-carriage and a removable platen, of paper-guide fingers which extend normally over the platen and a supporting-bar for the said fingers, the end plates of the platen being provided with open notches to receive the ends of said bar, and latches pivoted to said end plates and adapted to engage the said ends of the bar for holding the same in the notches.
