and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Type- VVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates more particularly to the tabulating mechanism of visible or front strike typewriting machines of a folding type, and is a division of. my application Sr. N0.'5O1,852, filed June 12, 1909, now Patent No..1,089,345, datedMarch 3, 1914. I One of the principal objects of thein-ven-, tion is to provide simple and efficient means whereby a plurality of stops mounted upon the platen carriage are adapted to engage a part which doesnot travel with the carnage in its letter spacing movement, and to provide simple means whereby any one of these stops may beengaged to arrest the move, ment of the carriage along its bed or support.
- Another object of the invention is to ,provide simple and efficient means whereby the movement of the carriage along its support while tabulating may be automaticallychecked against too violent shocks by reason of its sudden engagement with the stopping means.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efiicient means whereby theribbon mechanism maybe entirely out out of operation during the movement of the carriage while tabulating thus preventing a considerable part of the ribbon from not being used, which results in an unevenly used ribbon.
A still further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby immediately the escapement is released, the carriage tension means will'force the/carriage along its bed until stopped, and at the same time disengage both the escapement mechanismand the ribbon mechanism.
With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at. the end of the descripmembers of a foldable support.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of one form of machine embodyingmy invention, showing in dotted lines the upper part of the machine folded over the keyboard. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. of the upper part of the machine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the upper part of the machine.

While the invention is'shown as applied to, a typew-riting machine in which the. platen and carriage is foldable forward into overhanging relation to the keyboard and the invention is ordinarily employed in connection with such machine, it will be understood that many of the features of the invention may be applied to other classes of type'writing' or like machines.
The frame 10 may be of any suitable kind and at the rear corners thereof may be arranged brackets 11 in'which are adapted to be moved the posts or slides 12 forming a part of the platen shift mechanism. The ratchet Wheel 24 is secured to a shaft 24 supported at one end in a bracket 25 and at its other end extending through the bed 16. This shaft 24 has a pinion 26 heldtd rotate thereon and this pinion engages-a rack 27 mounted upon the carriagebase to adapt the carriage underits tension mecha nism to be forced for letter spacingwhen the escapement lever 22 is operated by the vertically movable bar 22. bars or arms 15. The connections between the keys 20 and the type-bars as well as the means whereby the bar 22 isoperated and also the platen shift mechanism,- are not shown herein as they may be of any suitable character.
The shaft 24" has a crown wheel 30 held thereto and engaging the crown wheel are bevel pinions 31, Fig. 2, secured to angularlyarranged shafts 32, and these shafts operate worms 32 or other means adapted to rotate the gears of the ribbon spools 33 and thus impart a lengthwisemovement to the ribbon at each movement of the carriage in letter the other spool is loose on its spindle in the usual way. The crown wheel 30 carries a member 34 of a two-part clutch. This member 34 has teeth on the upper edge thereof and adapted to engage said teeth are the teeth of a clutch member 35. This clutch member 35 is held to rotate with the pinion 26 but is movable lengthwise of the hub. or

Mounted upon the carriage at the rear thereof is a bar 54. This bar is pivotally held between the carriage frame members or ends and is normallyvheld in one position by a spring .35, the said bar being reduced to form studs in order that it may be properly'supported in the carriage frame.

.This bar 54 is provided with a number of vertical slots 59 on one side thereof which are spaced apart to correspond with the teeth of the rack 27 or otherwise. A number of stops are adapted to be detachably held to the" bar 54 'in such a way that the said stopsmay be positioned at different points along said bar. As shown, there are four kinds of stops each performing a particular function, that is, there is a marginal stop 60 which may serve also as a trip for the bell, and a line-lock operator, the tabulating stops 61, a regular or usual left hand marginal stop 62, and a final marginal stop 63. Each one of these stops comprises a body portion with two inwardly projecting teeth 64, Fig. 5, which are adapted to engage two of the slots of the bar 54, a looped portion forming a spring, and a gripping part 66. The part 64 has its lower end, as 67, formed so as to properly grip the face of the bar opposite the teeth 64 and serves to hold the stops or devices detachably to the bar 54, and said stops may have a raised part to engage under one end of the bar 54 to assist in holding the same to said'bar. The stop or device 60 has a pendent arm or part 68 which is adapted to engage a part of the hammer of the bell to trip the same and cause the .bell to ring and also a part of the line lock mechanism, not shown, and when used, and further is adapted to engage the bracket or guide 37 at the extreme movement of the carriage to serve as a stop therefor. Each of the stops or devices 61 has its lower edge beveled and each of said stops is adapted to engage the end' or part 69 of the vertically movable slide or member 50 when the latter is moved upward into the path of the same by the operation of the lever 46 when the key 48 is depressed. The stop 62 has a hinged part or member and said stop or device 62 serves as a regular left hand marginal stop and this membe'r or part 70 engages the projecting end 69 of the slide 50 when the carriage is moved toward the right to arrest the movement of the carriage. The construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in conncction with the accompanying drawings. In depressing the finger piece 48 of the lever 46, the lever 44 is moved upward on its pivot 45 and will engage the pin 49 so as to lift the arm or slide 50. This slide 50 will raise the slide or arm 39 and cause the angular portion 40 thereof to engage the flange 36 of the clutch member 35 and disengage said clutch member from the clutch member 34, thereby permitting the carriage to move quickly in the direction of travel while printing and until one of the stops engages the projection 69 which has also been moved upward as the lever 46 is operated, the escapement mechanism having been released by the disengagement of said clutch. As soon as the lever 46 is-released, the projection 69 on the member or slide 50 will be forced downward out of the path of the stops and the teeth of the clutch members will be engaged through the coiled spring 35 arranged under the pinion 26. By depressing the lever 56, the bar 54 may be moved on its pivot to force any one of the stops out of the path of the projection ,69 if in engagement therewith so that the carriage can travel quickly to the neXt stop, providing, of course, that the escapement has been released by the depression of the lever 46 as already explained, in order that the carriage may move freely by reason of the action of the propelling mechanism.
It will be understood that the tabulating stops are easy to set and that the carriage may be folded over and the setting made to scale, for the slotted bar or rail '54 may be provided with a scale on the top side there- .of so that the settingof the stops can be lating devices to be quickly and readily a-d-' justed or the carriage may be readily folded forward to make the tabulating bar readily accessible for shifting the positions of the different stops; that by the arrangement shown the ribbon mechanism is entirely cut out during the quick movements of the carriage so that no part of the ribbon remains unused;-tliat-the mainpart of the escane- 'ment mechanism is also out at the same tnne that the tabulafiu'gmeans is operated;
