IMPULSE-PIN FOR WATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905,
Application filed May 5,1905. Serial No. 259.017.
T0 at whmn it nta concern:
Be it known that I, EDMOND KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Or ange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Impulse-Pins for Watch- Movements, of which the following is a specification.
By means of this invention an impulse-pin for a watch movement or escapement can be readily and cheaply produced and applied and brought into required position.
This invention has been found serviceable in the manufacture of cheap watches, but no limitation of the invention is to be implied thereby.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a face view of an escapement embodying this invention and overlying parts having been removed or sectioned off to allow inspection. Fig. 2 is a face view of a balance-wheel with an impulse-pin blank on the wheel-shaft. Fig. 3 is a view like Fig. 2, the blank having been bent to form the impulse-pin. Fig. 4 is a section along 90 as, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a blank.
An object of this invention is to construct an adjustable impulse-pin.
In cheap timepieces the distance between the lever and balance-wheel is liable to vary or be changed. Heretofore round pins or partly-flattened pins have been used; but on account of their shortness these could not be bent to match with or engage the lever in case it should be necessary to obtain adjustment. To obtain an adjustable impulse-pin, a piece of sheet metal is cut and punched to the form shown in Fig. 5 and designated by the letter a. This impulse-pin a, is staked to the shaft or staff of balance-wheel I), Fig. 2, and then bent at right angles, as shown in Fig. 3. Should the lever c be too far away, the impulse-pin can be bent toward the lever, or if said lever is too close to the balance the impulse-pin can be bent away or in opposite direction. The invention is not confined to the specific shape of the pin shown, as an opening could be made in the balance-wheel, and the pin being made of any desired shape could be connected to the balance-wheel.
The blank shown in Fig. 5 is readily died or cut from a piece of pliable material or metal. It comprises an eye and a shank por tion, as seen. The eye is forced or pressed onto the shaft d of the balance-wheel, so as to remain in fixed position thereon. This eye or blank is seated or placed directly on the shaft or over the balance-wheel without requiring any other connecting means, such as a sleeve or tube or the like. Cheapness is thus secured. The free end of the blank being bent from the flat condition, Fig. 2, so as to occupy an angle, Fig. 3, such free end portion will form an impulse-pin or engage the fork of the escapement-lever. This end portion can be bent to a right angle or project vertically fromthe plane of the balance-wheel or more or less toward and from the shaft (Z, or even laterally, if required. In other words, this pin is universallyadjustable or bendable, as required for engagement by the fork or lever 0. By connecting the blank to the wheel transversely to the wheel-spoke, as seen in Fig. 2, the free end of theblank is exposed or will project so as to be readily grasped by an instrument or bent to the required angle or twist.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a balanceshaft, a balance-wheel and an escapement-lever, of an impulse-pin constructed from pliable material and having an eye at its inner extremity staked to the said shaft, and the outer extremity bent at an angle and projected through the balance-wheel for engagement with the escapement-lever.
2. The combination with a balance-shaft, a balance-wheel and an escapement-lever, of a pliable impulse-pin held by the balancewheel and having an outer extremity bent at an angle and projected through the said wheel for engagement with the lever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMOND KUHN.
