JAMES M. GWIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NEGKTlE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1905.
Application filed February 19 1904. Serial No. 194,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs M. GwIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Necktie-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to necktie holders or clips adapted to hold gentlemens ties in proper position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical, and inexpensive holder or clip which can be easily attached and detached and which will be effective and satisfactory in holding the tie in place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the bust of a man wearing a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
The holder shown for carrying out my invention comprises a metallic clip 1, made conveniently in the form of a fiat straight bar with an upwardly-extending projection 2, having an opening or aperture 3. The opening 3 is of a size adapted to accommodate an ordinary collar-button. The clip is made with side extensions, to the ends of which are attached the ends of an elastic band 4, which thus forms a loop. The ends of the clip 1 are conveniently provided with slots, and the ends of the band 4 are passed through these slots and sewed. The band 4 is of elastic material, so as to permit a considerable amount of stretch, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The clip is applied by placing it over the front collar-button after one end of the collar has been fastened to the front button so that the clip lies between the overlapping ends of the collar. The tie is then placed around the neck and one side or end of it passed through theclip by passing it from below into the loop formed by the rubber band 4. Then the tie is tied into a bow, fourin-hand, or other shape.
In Fig. 1 the overlapping end of the collar is shown broken away, and the upper portion of the tie is also broken away, so as to conveniently show the arrangement of the clip and the under end of the tie which passes through the clip.
It will be seen that the clip is firmly secured in place and that the elasticity of the band 4 permits the easy manipulation of the tie without interfering with the clip or displacing it. The band 4 stretches to allow the tie to be manipulated as desired. This, it will be seen, is a decided advantage over an all-metallic clip in that the latter is stiff and rigid and unyielding and makes it practically impossible to tie the tie except with great difficulty. It will also be seen that the device is simple and inexpensive.
It will be understood that changes and modifications can be made in the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the class specified, comprising a clip provided with means whereby it can be attached to the collar-button, and also provided with side extensions extending on opposite sides of said means of attachment, and an elastic loop arranged below said side extensions and attached to the outer ends thereof, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class specified, comprising a clip 1 provided with a closed aperture for attaching the clip to the collar-button and constructed with side extensions eXtend ing to the sides of said aperture, and an elastic band 4 forming a loop below the clip and having its ends attached to the outer ends of said side extensions, substantially as described.
3. A necktie-holder comprising aclip 1 having a projection 2 provided with an aperture 3, and an elastic band 4 having its ends secured to the opposite ends of the clip, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 30th day of December, A. D.
JAMES M. GWIN. Witnesses:
