IMPROVEMENT .IN SCAPFOLDING.

`Be it known that we, 32 W. GLovER, WILLIAMB. ORNER, and B. E. Onnnn, of-Martinsvi1lc, in the county of Morgan, and State of Indiana., have invented a new and useful Improvement inpShores for Raising House# Frames; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the'art tovmake and use the'same, reference being had to thc accompanying drawings, vforming part of the specilication, in which- A Figure 1 is a sectionalsidc view 'of our invention, the section being taken through. the line a: x, fig. 2.

4Figure 2 is a 4front view of the invention? i Similar letters of reference indicatecorrespondingparts The object of this inventio'nis to-accomplish theraisingof house-frames with a small number of persons. t-cvonsistsof tivo or `more toothed'shorcs, in combination with saddles, to be set on the upper tie-beamsrof the ben ts, so called, and which accomplish the raising of the bents bythe reciprocating action ofthe shores, all of which, together with other devices perfecting the whole, is hereinafter fully set forth.

'The shores are twoorthree in number, and are operatedfin. two ways. When veryheavy frames or bcnts areto be raised, the modification' shown in the drawing is used. It consists of two racks or notched shores H H, the lower vends of which are .pivotedto' blocked J, as shown', allowing the notched edges of the'shores to re'st against the pins e e of the saddles'. i

.The middle'or ratchet-*shore similarly provided with serratures or notches; which rest against thepin cof-the middle saddle. v

A hand-lever, D, ispivoted to the lower end of the ratchet-shore, in any suitahe manner, and is,also provided with tr'unniomarmsra a,'whch"liave hearings in thc'pillow-block E. This block is afxed to the ground` by stakes or .other means.

.When thebentis to be raised, its tenonsffarc placed lin' front of themortises of the door-frame I J J', and

prevented from slippingbeyond the said mortises by bloc-lis b.

. Thebent lying upon the hoor-frame is raised by hand-spikes untily thelowest-notches of `the three shores Icatch upon `their respective,saddle-pins. The'lever D is then vibratcd, thus actuating' the ratchet-shore with a reciprocating motion, which lifts thebent through a short angular space at cach vibrationof: the lever. As the bent is thus lifted, the notches of the shores HH catch upon their-respective pins, nndthus serve as props to the'4 bent, holdingl it 'from backward Ymovement while thc ratchet-shore C is being drawnV down-ward to obtain another hold.

The bentis thus raised by the power of oneortwo men, and, when itz-attains4 Aavertical position, thetenons' slip into the 'mortis'es,-and the shores and saddles are removed to another bent.

Whenthe frame of a small house is to .be raised, the lateral shores H H may be dispensedfwith, and i two ratchet-shores similar to theimiddle;V shore C'may be used, bothworking counter to eachother. i

A modification o f our invention may vbemade,by-'providing' thc saddles with ratchet-pinions, andforming the teeth of the shoresto engage therewith,`thcra'thet-pawl of 'the pinions being so arranged that the downward movement of 'theshore.ox-"shoreswould rotate thepinions, while, atthe ipwardmovement of :the shores, the'pinons would beheld from rotationV by their p awls, and'thus-the b ent would he'raised at cach upward iriiove ment of thershores. i

In practice, the pillow-block E may be of wood or .cast iron; The saddles should be of cast or wrought iron, and are easily shifted from one bent to another.

The blcks d d may be of wod, and are aixed to the Hoor-frame by nails o'r serews, or to the ground by pins or stakes. i

This invention is also applicable for raisingtrestle-work, bridge-framing, or other similar structures.`

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- .The employment ofv ratchet-shores, saddles, and levers as a device or devices for raising the frames of houses,

all substantially as shown and described.
