WIRE-REEL.
Spe0ification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed Octoher 19, 1904. Serial N0. 229,130.
T0 all wh0m it may concern:
Be 113 known that we, OTTO H. VOLKERDING ancl FREDERICK H. VOLKERDING, citizens of the Uniecl States, residing ab Augusta, in the couny of St. Charles, State of Missouri, have inventecl certain new and useful Improvernents in Wire-Reels; and we clo hereby declare the the practice being 110 draw all of the staples excepting those ab one encl 0f he wire and then to attach the free end 0f the wire 110 the reelancl roll the reel along the ground 1:0 Wind the wires thereonto.
Afurther obje.ct of the invention is 110 proviole, in connection with the wheel, a supporing-frame, which may be attacheol thereto or cletacheol therefrorn ancl which when attached so the real may be held in erect position by graspinq the franne clirect or by grasping the handle, so that the reel will be supportecl above the ground to Wind wire thereon under such conclitions as make this mode 0f operation Of aclvantage.
A further object 0f ohe invenoion is 110 provide an improved struture that Will perrnit 01 shifting the wire-supporing portions of the reel inwardly or toward each other 130 facilitate removal of the roll of wire after it is forrnecl.
Other objects and advanages 0f the invention will be underseocl from the following description.
In the clrawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several Views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the in- Fig. 2
' is an elevation ab right angles to Fig. 1, with the wire rernoved. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the wire-supporbing armes.
Referring now so the drawings, there is illustraed a supporting-frarne comprising sides 1 and 2 or uprights hinged 130 a base 4:, as illustrated ab 3, so that bhe upper ends thereof may be movecl towarcl and away frorn each other, the rnovernent 0f the upper encls towarcl each other being Iirnitecl by corner-blocks 3 and there being prbvidecl a long holt-bar that is engagecl through the upper ende of the uprights so hold thern against separation.
J ournaled in the uprights 1 and 2 is an axle or shaft; 6, and upon this axle are securecl the reel sicles 7, each side being f0rrnecl of tw0 pieces connected intermediate of their ende and ab right angles by halving, so that each side is in the forrn of a spider. Each arm of each spicler has its outer encl slouted, as illustratecl, the slots of two arme 0f each set 01' spid'er having cross-pieces 8 fixecl berein. The other two arrns 01 each sei: 0r spicler have their slots 9 longer than those containing the cross-pieces 8, and in these longer slots are sliolably arrangecl the cross-pieces 10.
T0 the encls of the cross-pieces 10 are secured plates 12, having longitudinal slots 13 therein, and which plates are disposed against the outer faces 0f the corresponcling spiderarrns. Through the slots of the plates and the corresponcling arme are engaged holte or pins 14:, providecl 'With the carn-levers 15 ancl the nuts 16, there being a washer 17 upon the inner end 'of the pin 14 between Ehe inner face 0f the arm and Ehe nut 16. Wit1h this eonstruction by shifting the can1-levers, the inner faces 01 which bear normally against; the plabes 12, the plates may be clamped so or released frorn uhe arrns to perrnit of adjustment 0f the cross-pieces 10 0r to hold them against movement.
Secured 130 the axle 6 at the outer sicle 0f each spider are ratchet-wheels 19, which may be attaehed 110 the arms 0f the spiders by means of screws 18.
In order that the reel may berolled along he ground when rernoved frorn between the uprights 1 ancl 2, a handle ls provided, illustrated als 20 and comprising sicle mernbers pivotally engaged with bhe end portions of the axle ab one end and connected at their opposite ends by a cross-bar. By this n1eans the reel rnay be rollecl along the ground over the wire '00 Wind he labter 0t1t0 the 1eel.
When it is desired 110 rernove the roll of .wire from the reel, it is only necessary 130 manipulate thecarn-levers to release the plates 12 anal to then shift the cross-pieces 10 inwarclly, when the roll ot' wire may be rernoved, it being notecl that the cross-pieces 8 and 9 l1ave tl1eir outer longitudinal eclges coucaved t0 better retain the roll 0f wire during tl1e wincling operation.
T0 hold the reel against return rotauion when 113 is usecl in its supnorting-frame, pawls 21 a1e pivoted t0 the sicles of the handle 20 in position to engage bl1e ratchet-wheels 19, and if i1: is desired t0 unwincl tl1e wire fr om the real lt is only necessary to tl1row tl1e pawls into oppositepositions, as il'lustrated.
Wlmt is claimecl is l. In a device 0l filme dass describefl, a hause; uprights each hingeclly connectecl to the base; a shaft journalecl in the uprights; setis 0f arms forming the ends of the real monntecl np0n the axle, nach arm having a slot in its outer end; cross-pieces arrangecl in cortesponcling slots of each set of mn1s; plates securecl t0 correspondi'ng ends 0f cross-pieces; anal means associatecl with ehe sai'd plates ancl corresponclfing arms 150 loosen und tigl1ten corresponcli'ng cross-Pieces in adjusttcl relation wi'th respecb to their arms.
2. In a device 01: tl1e dass describecl, a base; uprights each hingeolly connected t0 the base; a shaft journal'ecl in bhe upr-ights; sets of arnns forming the ends 0f the reel mouned upon the axle, each arm having a slot in its outer encl; cross-pieces arranged in corresponding slots of each set of arrns; plates secured so the corresponding ends of cross-pieces; mea-ns associated Witl1 l3l18 said plates und corresponding z'mrmsto loosen and tighten corresponding cross-pieces in acljustable relation with respect so their arms; a lzxtchet-wheelcarried by tl1e reel am] an operaliihg-lever mou r'1ted x-1ponfihe shafls sa'id lever having a pawl f0r engagernnt With saicl ratchet-wh'eel.
