Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1.905.
Application filed September 29, 1904. Serial No. 226,574.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUGI-IEs, a
British subject, and a resident of Bolton,
county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Creating Draft Through F urnaces of Locomotive-Boilers, of which the following is a specification. 4 X
This invention relates to apparatus for producing a draft through the fire-box and tubes of locomotive-boilers during the initial stages of firing for the purpose of raising steam therein while the locomotive-engine is in the engine-shed.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic longitudinal section of locomotive-shed, showing the apparatus as arranged for locomotive-engines therein with engine in position; Fig. 2, plan of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, enlarged transverse section of part of the apparatus, showing details for connecting with the locomotive smokes-tack; Fig. 4, side elevation of same, partly in section, with the parts in position on the locomotive smokestack.
As applied to a locomotive-shed or other structure in which locomotive or other portable engines are housed a smoke shaft or conduit A is placed to extend along the ordinary smoke-trough with openings or apertures therein at intervals to accommodate the 10-.
comotive smoke-stacks D. At each aperture a down piece or tube B is-attached to the conduit, with an adjustable sliding or ex tension tube B at its outer end to connect the smoke-stack D with the interior of the conduit A. The adjustable tube B is supported by or hun upon chains or wire ropes B passing over the pulleys B in brackets B and counterbalanced at the other end with weights B or springs, &c., the weight being preferably heavier than the tube. A valve or shutter C is formed at the lower end of the adjustable sliding tube B, which will fall by gravity when not engaged with the locomotive smoke-stack D to close the end of the tube. The lower end of the tube B is enlarged and provided with an annular plate or internal flange E, the opening 0 in the plate being equivalent to the area of the tube. The annular flange E forms a seating for the valve C. The valve comprises a disk or shutter C and annular plate or ring F, connected by studs or pins The disk or shutter C rests upon the annular flange E and closes the opening 6 therein. The ring F when the tube B is drawn down rests upon the top of the locomotive smoke-stack D and pushes the valve or shutter C upward, forming a passage round it for air and products of combustion to enter the tube B and pass to the smoke-conduit A.
To the outside of the adjustable sliding tube B one, two, or more catches G are pivoted to engage the top of the smoke-stack D and hold the tube in contact therewith while the draft is being applied thereto. The catches G are supported in the brackets H and held in engagement with the flange of the smoke-stack top D by springs J.
At one end of the shed or in any convenient position upon the smoke shaft or con-.
duit A a fan or air-propeller K is'fitted to induce a draft through the conduit A, and a chimney or funnel L is provided to discharge the products of combustion. The fan or airpropeller K may be of any known make or construction and is preferably driven by an electric motor M, or it may be driven by a belt or otherwise.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. Apparatus for creatin draft through the furnaces of locomotiveoilers comprising in its construction a smoke-conduit provided with an inlet-aperture, a depending tube covering the aperture, a sliding extension on said tube to connect it with the top of a locomotive smoke-stack and a valve for governing the flow of gases through said tube and extension, said valve being held in a closed position when said extension is out of action but opened through the instrumentality of the locomotive smoke-stack when said extension is brought into operative relation with respect thereto, substantially as described.
2. Apparatus for creating draft through the furnaces of locomotive-boilers comprising in its construction a smoke-conduit extending any desired length, provided with a plurality of apertures at intervals, downwardly-extending tubes attached to the conduit covering the apertures, sliding extension-tubes fitted to the fixed tubes to connect same with the locomotive smoke-stack and valves for governing the flow of gases through the said tubes and extensions, the said valves being held in a closed position when the said extensions are out of action either valve be.-
ing opened through the instrumentality of the locomotive smoke-stack when the extension in which such valve is placed is brought into operative relation in respect thereto substantially as described.
