SAFETY DEVICE FOR OIL-LAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed March 17, 1905. Serial No. 250,641.
To aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. KEYEs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Oil-Lamps, of which the following isa specification.
This invention comprises a novel attachment particularly designed for application to oillamps to admit of automatic discharge of any excess in gas which may be generated in the oil-chamber of the lamp giving rise to likelihood of an explosion.
In the preferred adaptation of the invention the same consists of a peculiar form of fillercap for the font of the lamp or burner, the
' construction of the cap providing a safetyvalve adapted to operate automatically in the manner before premised.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
l/Vhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, partly broken away, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the invention alone. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tiller-cap, parts separated.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The drawings illustrate the invention as when applied to the font 1 of an ordinary burner or lamp. As is customary in securing filler-caps to lamps of this type, an internallythreaded thimble 2 is provided for the tilleropening of the oil-chamber. In general form the filler-cap 3 is similar to many now in use, said cap, however, being made in sections in carrying out the invention. The body of the cap 3 is designated 4 and is externally threaded, so as to be readily screwed into the thimble 2, said body having a vertical opening 5 therethrough. .The body 4 constitutes one part of the filler-cap 3, the other part consisting of a cap-piece 6, by which the body 4 is adapted to be removed or applied to the font in the usual manner. The cap-piece 6 forms a finger-piece by which the body 4 may be manipulated, as above described, said member 6 being provided with an annular. knurled flange 7 to facilitate gripping the same.
The member 6 constitutes a valve element,
and a tubular valve-stem 8 projects from the under side of the cap-piece, passing through the opening 5 in the body 4 of the device. The lower extremity of the stem Sis open, and a lateral opening 9 leads from the inner portion of the stem through the side thereof, said opening 9 being located adjacent the upper extremity or point of jointure of the stem with the cap-piece 6. The stem 8 extends some distance below the body 4, and mounted upon the lower portion of the stem is a coil-spring 10, the upper end of which bears against the under side of the body 4, while the lower extremity of the spring passes through the stem near the lower extremity of the latter. The spring 10 normally holds the parts 4 and 6 together, and when the under side of the cap-piece 6 is in contact with the upper side of the body 4 the opening 9 of the stem is closed by means of the body 4 aforesaid. The spring 10 of course admits of upward movement of the cap-piece 6 upon excess of pressure in the font or oilchamber in the lamp or burner, and said cappiece is thus raised from the body 4, permitting gases to escape and admitting air to the font in a manner which will be readily apparent.
In order that the cap-piece 6 may have interlocking connection with the body 4, so that by turning the cap-piece the device may be readily screwed into or out of the thimble 2, a small stem 11 is extended from the upper side of the body 4 and operates in a vertical opening 12, extending from the lower or under side of the cap-piece 6. The stem 11 permits free vertical movement of the cappieoe 6 in opening and closing the valveopening 9; but said stem afi'ords an interlocking connection between the parts 4 and 6, which will permit the said parts to be revolved together in applying or detaching the filler-cap.
It will be understood that though the invention is especially used as a filler-cap, yet the same comprises a valve device which may be applied in various ways wherein an automatically-operating valve may be advantageously used.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a body, a cap-piece applied to the body, a valve-stem projected from the cappiece and extending through the body, said stem having a longitudinal valve-opening, means for preventing displacement of the cap-piece from the body, and a stem projecting from the body and cooperating with the cap-piece to afford interlocking connection between the parts.
2. In a valve device of the class described, the combination of an externally-threaded body provided with an opening therethrough,
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in 3 presenceoi' two witnesses.
EDWARD F. KEYES.
