WE/WWW 0 Wmdw TUTMFD TATES FATFN T UFFTE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed November 1. 1904:- Serial No. 230.983.
To all 1071,0110 it 'lll/ll/f/ POI/1,0877%.
Be it known that I, ALVRADO HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Upton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massacliusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Holders and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in file-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder in which files may be held for use in filing the bits of planing-machines, thereby greatly facilitating this operation.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, easily operated, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the application of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particu arly to the draw ings, 1 denotes the file-holding frame, which consists of a horizontally-disposed guidebar 2, forming the base of the frame. On one side of the bar 2, near the ends of the same, are formed upwardly-projecting standards 3, having formed on their upper ends laterallyprojecting bearing-brackets 1. Said brackets preferably consist of open frames formed by top and bottom plates 5 and 6, which are connected at their ends by spacing-blocks 7.
The top plates 5 of the brackets 4 are connected by a longitudinally-disposed handle 8.
In the top and bottom plates 5 and 6 in the brackets 4 are "formed alined apertures 9, and between the same are arranged adjusting-nuts 10. Adjustably supported by the brackets 4 are file-carrying bolts 12, the up per threaded ends of which are adapted to project through the apertures 9 and are on gaged by the nuts 10, located between the plates 5 and 6 of said brackets, whereby when said nuts are turned in one direction or the other said bolts will be raised or lowered in the apertures of said bracket-plates, thereby adjusting the length of said bolts.
On the lower end of each bolt 12 is formed a diagonally-arranged downwardly-projecting arm 13, the lower end of which is bent to form a stationary clamping-jaw 1d, pivotally connected to the lower end of the bolts 12. Diametrically opposite to the arms 13 are arms 15, on the lower end of which are formed movable clamping-jaws 16. In the arms 15, immediately above the aws 16, are formed vertically-disposed apertures or slots 17, through which. are adapted to project clamping-bolts 18, the inner ends of which are pivotally connected to the arms 13 of the fixed jaws 14. On the outer threaded ends of the bolts 18 are arranged clamping-nuts 18, by which said movable arms and jaws may be adjusted with respect to said fixed jaws, by which means a file may be clamped and held between the jaws 14 and 16 of said file-carrying bolts 12.
Secured to the lower ends of the bolts 12 adjacent to the pivotal connection of the arms is a spring 19, the opposite end of which is adapted to engage said pivoted arms, thereby normally forcing the same outwardly or away from the fixed arms 13.
In practice a file is placed between the jaws on the ends of the bolts 12 and is securely clamped and held by said. jaws. The holder is now applied to the bit block or cylinder of the planing-machine in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which position the guide-bar 2 will engage the plain side of the bits on said block. The bolts 12 are now adjusted to bring the file into engagement with the beveled edge of said bits, after which the handle 8 of the holder is grasped and. said holder thereby reciprocated back and forth across said block, thus quickly and evenly filing and sharpening the cutting edge of the bit.
A file-holding device constructed as herein shown. and described Will be found to greatly facilitate the process of sharpening bits of planing-machines and the like, also for performing work in a much more satisfactory manner than has heretofore been accomplished.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the invenwill be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details or" construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
-Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A file-holding device of the character described, comprising a guiding and supporting frame, consisting of a longitudinally-disposed guide-b ar having upwardly-proj ecting standards arranged thereon laterally-projecting right angularlydisposed bearing brackets formed on said standards, a handle connecting said brackets, vertically-disposed fileholding bolts, adjust-ably mounted in said 2 IIBSSQS.
