JAMES P. KARE, OF MONIICELLO, INDIANA.
STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2%, 1905.
Application filed April 6, 1904- Serial No. 201,842.
To (Z whont '1' f; TIT/(Ly concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES P. KARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello,
in the county of \Vhite and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an attachment to steam-boilers, and has for its object to provide means whereby the boiler capacity may be increased over steam-boilers as heretofore constructed and without corresponding increase of fuel consumption.
The invention consists, broadly stated, of a portable independent section adapted to be placed at the rear end of return-flue boilers or the smoke-box end of direct-draft boilers.
Specifically stated, it consists of the special construction, combination, and arrangement of parts shown by the accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully deseribed, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing a brokenaway rear end of a return-flue steam-boiler with my improved attachment applied thereto, the section being taken in line direct through the attachment. Fig. 2 is an inner plan view of my attachment; andFig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating my attachment applied to the smoke-box end of a direct-draft steam-boiler.
In the practice of my invention I employ a suitable box or shell A, constructed with an outer sheet or hull B, an inner sheet C, an outer head D,and an inner head E,havinglaterally-disposed tubes F. The latter have their free or projecting ends G- closed and their inner space made communicating through openings II with the water I within the box or shell attachment A. At the front end of the box or shell I arrange a suitable sheet J, clos- The sheet J is constructed with an opening Leorresponding to the recess M in the box or shell A formed by the inner sheet C and the inner head E. The tubes F are arranged on the inner head E, leaving a lower unobstructed portion M in the recess M, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
At the under side of my attachment I arrange an opening N, leading in the space M, and I also provide a similar opening 0, leading into said space M from the rear of my attachment. The openings N O are designed for clean-out purposes and the latter thereof adapted for use as will appear farther on. I denotes a steam-pipe having a suitable coupling Q in its length and adapted for providing passage-way between the steam-space K of my attacln'nent and the steanti-spacc R of the boiler S.
It will be understood that proper water passage-way should be provided between my attachment A and the boiler S and also that the attachment be suitably secured to the end of the boiler S.
The water passage-way referred to may be located at any suitable position affording free circulating connection. It is indicated by dotted line A in Fig. 1 and transverse section or open end view in Fig. 2.
In the use of my invention as illustrated in Fig. 1 at the rear end of a return-flue boiler it is apparent that much additional heatingsurface is provided over all similar boilers having this end thereof closed by the wellknown brick or other similar arch.
The attachment is equally adapted for use with a direct-draft boiler, as indicated in Fig. 3. In this connection or use of my invention a suitable smoke-uptake T is arranged in rear of the attachment and made communicating with its space M through the rear opening 0, which latter should be constructed to provide adequate passage-way for all products of combustion leading from the space M into the uptake T.
My invention will be understood from the above description. It forms an attachment or section to asteam-boiler whereby the steammaking capacity is materially increased over all similar boilers as heretofore constructed, and the improved generating capacity being effected through minimum consumption of fuel. A boiler attachment or section construeted according to my invention has further advantage in being portable in nature and readily attachable to return-line and direct-draft boilers as the same are now constructed.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Asupplemental section forsteam-boilers, consisting of an outer hull, inner and outer sheets or heads held spacedly apart by the hull, forming therebetween water and steam spaces, the inner sheet or head of the section being provided with a depressed combustionchamber, a series of horizontally-disposed chamber on the inner sheet side of the sup- 3 plemental section, a series of horizontallydisposed tubes in the depressed combustionchamber, the tubes being in open communication at one end With the sections Waterspace, and closed at their outer or free ends, clean-out openings leading through the inner and outer sheets of the section, Water and steam circulating passage-Ways adapted for connection with suitable similar passage-Ways extending from the Water and steam spaces 2 of the main boiler, and flanges on the section and main boiler, having suitable perforations adapting them to be secured together by bolts or rivets, substantially as described.
