HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed April 12, 1902. Serial No. 102,653.
1'0 aZZ whowt it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. SARGENT, of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the hinge embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section on lines 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a central vertical section through the washers; Figs. 4 and 5, top views of the washers, and
Fig. 6 a bottom view of the retaining-sleeve.
In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to the class known as antifrictionhinges, and has for its object the production of a novel, simple, and effective antifriction device applicable in its use to a hinge or similar article.
One feature of the invention is the uniting or holding of the various parts of the antifriction device in a single unitary structure which may be removed by itself from the hinge or other article; and the invention consists in this and other improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimedhereinafter.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description, the parts designated by the letters A and B represent the two leaves of a hinge, of which a and 6 represent the respective knuckles.
C is the pintle of the hinge.
D and E designate a pair of washers adapted to fit between the knuckles a and 6. In one of the washers, as D, is an annular groove or recess d for a series of balls F. The washer D is provided with a circular perforation cl, and G is a sleeve the lower end of which fits into said perforation CZ, and when so assembled the outer surface of the sleeve forms the inner face of the recess d for the balls. Near the upper end of the sleeve G its outer surface is outwardly tapered, as shown at 9, so that when assembled the upper end projects slightly over the balls, thereby retaining them in position in the recess (Z. The washerE is provided with a circular perforation a, into which the upper end of the sleeve G fits, and when so assembled the washers are held in their relative positions by the sleeve G.
A11 axial perforation g in the sleeve G is adapted to receive the pintle, and the device is assembled in the hinge by placing it between the knuckles and inserting the pintle through the knuckles and aXial perforation g of the sleeve G.
By the withdrawal of the pintle the washer and balls may be removed from the hinge as a single unitary structure, and the balls will remain in place until the sleeve Gris removed from the washer D.
Having now described my invention, (which may vary somewhat in its details without departing from the spirit thereof,) what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a hinge; of a pintle; a pair of washers adapted to fit between the knuckles of said hinge, one of said washers having an annular channel; a series of balls in said channel, and a sleeve forming the inner side of said channel and being adapted to receive said pintle, said washers and sleeve being removable as a unitary structure from said hinge upon the extraction of said pintle, and said washers being held together, when removed, by means of said sleeve; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand on the 8th day of April, 1902.
HENRY B. SARGENT.
