Description

No. 802,621. PATENTED OUT. 24, 1905. H. VON BLUGHER.
LAMP CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 29, 1905.
Wm V770 HANS v. BLI'TGHER, OF GLAS'HAGEN, NEAR DOBERAN, GERMANY.
LAIVIP-CHIIVIN EY ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, Hans von BLUGHER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg, residing at the village of G-lashagen, near Doberan, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention refers to an apparatus to be fitted on top of the lamp-glass in order to increase the lighting power of the lamp, the consumption of the oil or gas remaining the same or being reduced. The intended effect is obtained by choking the escape of the com bustion-gases and both increasing the temperature and also reducing the amount of air entering from outside, thereby avoiding the cooling down of the incandescent mantle or the gases heating the same. The apparatuses for this purpose known up to the present consist of complicated choking devices fitted in or close over the lamp-glass, the draft being regulated by means of dampers or adjustable caps, which are exposed to the heat of the flame, and therefore iuconveniently handled, besides being subject to frequent disorder.
To simplify existing devices and obtain one which will be practical notwithstanding the great heat to which the parts are subjected, I employ rings, perforated disks, or similar devices by means of which it is easy to favorably regulate the clear width of the passage.
The present invention consists of a socket reducing the clear inside width of the lampglass and having rings or similar parts which have passages of different size and are placed into the socket.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows a lamp-chimney in dotted lines with my attachment applied thereto,
In the figure shown, a is a socket or cap tapering upward, which is fitted on top of the lamp-glass and is clamped there by means of resilient tongues b. The socket or cap, as shown, is of greater diameter than that of the lamp-chimney and forms an expansion-cham- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29,1905. Serial No. 267,599.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
her for the products of combustion, said cap, as shown in the figure, having a portion of its top depressed or reentering and apertured to form a seat for a draft-regulating device, which may, for instance, consist of interchangeable disks c, provided with axial openings whose diameters vary, which will leave a more or less narrow passage clear, as may be required for the purpose of more or less choking .the outflow of the products of com bustion, and thereby regulating the admission of air to the chimney and burner.
In order to obtain the maximum lighting power after the apparatus has been fitted on, the gas-supply is reduced so far until the incandescent mantle is in full glow. In most instances it will be possible to reduce the gassupply by one-half.
When the apparatus is placed on the lampglass with the gas-valve full open, the mantle will not come into full glow. By placing, however, the most suitable ring into the socket and closing the gas-valve partly the maximum glow will be obtained.
Having thus described the nature of this my invention, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. Attachment for lamp-chimneys compris ing a cap enlarged to form an expansionchamber, said cap provided with an apertured recessed seat in its top; in combination with a discoidal draft-regulating device loosely seated on said seat and provided with an aperture of smaller cross-sectional area than the like area of the aperture in its seat and that of the upper end of the lamp-chimney.
2. An attachment for lamp-chimneys comprising a socket having an upwardly-tapering base portion, a plurality of resilient clampingtongues formed at the base of the tapering portion, and a pocket formed above the base portion, having an aperture formed therein;
in combination with a disk loosely seated in said pocket having an aperture of smaller diameter than and concentric to the aforesaid aperture.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANS v. BLUCHER.
