ED`WIN M. GILMORE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE CONSOLI- DATED FRUIT JAR COMPANY, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
WIETAL CAP FCR BOTTLE"STOPPERS Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed May 5, 1905. Serial No. 258,945.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GILMoRu. a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Caps for Bottle-Stoppers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in metal caps for bottle-Stoppers.
The object of the invention is to provide a sheet-metal cap for bottle-Stoppers, whereby the outer or upper end of the same will be provided with an ornamental finish, as well as means to facilitate the removal of the stopper from the bottle.
A further object is to provide means for securing the cap to the stopper to prevent the turning` or twisting of the same thereon.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter' described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of abottle-stopper having one of' the caps applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of' the same, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of acap removed from the stopper.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the cap, which is preferably formed with a flat top or upper surface 2, around the edge of which is formed an annular radially-projecting bead 3, below which is formed an annular flange 4. The annular bead 3 is provided with an ornamental beaded or fluted edge 5, which serves to form a gripping-surface, whereby the stopper may be turned in the mouth of the bottle, and thereby more easily removed.
The cap l is preferably formed of a single piece of metal which is pressed or otherwise formed into the desired shape and will be made in various sizes to fit different-sized stoppers. In applying the caps the same are placed upon the upper end of the stopper and may be. secured thereon in any suitable manner, the same being here shown as cemented to the stopper and as being further held thereon by clenching the flange 4C into tight engagement with the sides of the stopper. The hollow bead 3 is adapted to contain a liquid cement a', and when placed upon the stopper the upper edges of the latter will be forced into the cement lying in said hollow bead, so that when said cement hardens the cap will be securely retained on the stopper.
A cap constructed as herein shown and described provides an ornamental as well as useful attachment f'or Stoppers, giving a iinish to the upper end of the same, as well as affording' means for facilitating the removal of the stopper from the bottle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor ditails of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A metal cap for bottle-Stoppers made from a single piece of sheet metal and having a hollow outwardly-projecting annular ange, said flange having embossed therein beads or indentations, a downwardly-projecting annular iiange designed to engage the sides of the stopper, and cement within the hollow iiange to secure the stopper to said. cap, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described bottle-stopper consistingof a cork or stopper, ametal cap formed from a single piece of sheet material having' a flat upper surface, an outwardly-projecting embossed flange and a downwardly-projecting engaging flange, cement within the hollow fiange to secure the stopper to said cap, and the down Yardly-projecting flange compressed against the sides of the cork or stopper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDVIN M. GILMORE.
