Description

@uitrit gisten gtttsnt. @frn Letters Patent No.- 8G,228, dated July 2l, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWER elle riptnle nimh It in that @letters tant mit mating nrt at tigtr same.
TO ALL WHOM IT'fMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ANDREW SMITH, of Dayton, inr the county of Yam Hill, and State of Oregon, have invented 'a new and useful Improvement in HorsePower; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sections of a portion ofthe same, taken respectively in the lines :c rv, y y, g. 1.
Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This, invention relates to a new and improved horse-power, in which belts-are employed, insteadof gearing, for transmitting the power from tii' driving-wheel to the shaft from which the power is taken. The invention is designed for a portable machine, which may be readily put up and taken down, and readily kept in repair by any person of ordinary ability. l i
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, A represents a suitable frame, in which a verticalshaft, a, is rmly secured, having a wheel, B, keyed'- upon it, to'wliich a. sweep, C, is attached, the rim of the wheel B resting or bea-ring upon anti-friction rollers, b, as shown clearly in iig. 1. i y
D is a driving-belt, which passes around` the wheel B, and is made to hug the periphery of' said wheel by means of twovertical rollers, c c, as indicated by the dotted lines in iig. 1.
This frame A is staked to the ground in any suitable way` v E is a frame, in -which a vertical shaft, d, is tted, and on which a wheel, F, is keycd,'around which the driving-belt D passes. rllhisshaft d is adjustable in thel direction indicated by the arrows 1 1 and2 2, (see iig;`
L 1,) the bearings e of the shaft d being connected by a bracket, F, in which a screw, G, is fitted, and by turning which the bearings may be moved in the direction of the arrows 1.
The bearings .e are ittcd in slides H H, which are connected by a bracket, I, in which a screw, J, is tted, and, by turning this screw,` the bearings may be moved inthe direction indicated by the arrows 2. By moving the bearings in the direction indicated by the arrows 1, the driving-belt D may always Ybe kept at a proper degreeof tension. Y g 1 In the frame E there is also iitted a vertical shaft, K, having a pulley, L, upon it, and also a wheel, M.
A belt', N, passes around the pulley L, and also around`a wheel, O, in the shaft d, above wheel F.
By moving theslides H H, through the medium of the screw J, the belt N may be tightened and kept at theproper degree of tension.
The horse is attached to the sweep C, and rotates the wheel B, in passing around frame A., a bridge being l placed over the driving-belt D, for the horse'to walk over. The power is taken from.. the wheel M.
The advantage of this invention consists inthe simplicity of its construction, the moderate costof manufacture, and the facility with which it may be kept in repair by any' person of ordinary mechanical ability.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
The shaft d, in the frame E, arranged so as to be capable of being adjusted in-two different directions by means of the screws J G, connected respectively with the 'slides H and bearings e, as indicated bythe arrows 1 2, in combination with the frame A, containing the driving-belt D and rollers c c, and the b elt with the shaft K in frame E, all arranged for joint operation, substantiallyin the manner as and for the purpose set forth. i
ANDREW SMITH.
