.n rrnn s PATENT orrron Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed June 30, 1904.. Serial No. 214,782.
To all whmrt it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. FREY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful 1m provementin Expressing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those portable expressing-presses known as kl-shaped potato-mashers and fruit presses or strainers; and it consistsin certain novel combinations of peeuliarly-constructed parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The leading object of the invention is to render the segmental or V-shaped cup readily removable for convenience in cleansing and to provide for readily replacing a cup with a new one or one having coarse perforations with one having finer perforations, or vice versa. The cup with coarse perforations is used for mashing potatoes and the cup with liner perforations for pressing and straining fruits for jam, jellies, etc.
Another object of the invention is to render all the parts of the improved press readily separable, so as to provide for the use of interchangeable parts.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a side view and a top view of the press wide open, the appearance of the closed press being also in dicated in Fig. 1 by the addition of "dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section through the cup on a larger scale. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cup detached; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the follower and its brace detached, the latter being broken off.
Like reference letters and numbers refer to like parts in all the figures.
The principal parts of the improved press are a pair of lever-pieces A and B, terminating at one end in handles 1 and 2 and articulated at the other end by a removable transverse pintle 3, interacting with pairs of hinge-lugs 4: and 5 on the respective lever-pieces, a removable W-shaped cup 0, carried by the leverpiece A, and a follower D, connected at one extremity by a brace 6 with the lever-piece B and supported at its other extremity by said pintle 3. The main lever-piece A is further constructed with a rectangular frame 7 to surround the cup 0 when the latter is in position, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and with a pair of stop-shoulders 8, Fig. 3, adjoining its hinge-lugs 1 to support the lever-piece B in its wide-open position, Figs. 1 and 2, so that the press as a whole may be held by the handle 1 of the lever-piece A.
The lever-piece B is constructed with a bifurcated inner end, forming the hinge-lugs 5, and with a hole in its stiffening-rib 9 to interact with a removable pin 10 for the removable attachment thereto'of the brace 6.
The cup (J, being preferably and conveniently of suitably-preforated sheet metal, has a wired upper edge 11, adapted to rest on said frame 7 of the lever-piece A and is so litted within said frame as to be movable back and forth to a limited extent. Preferably it is so movable endwise of the press, as shown, and is constructed with an embossed projection 12 on its front to interlock with the front bar of said frame 7 and with a spring 13, attached to its back to press against the rear bar of said frame 7 and to hold the cup in its locked position. When the press is wide open, as shown in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 1, the cup C can be pressed bodily backward, so as to free said projection 12 from the frame 7, and the cup can then be tilted out of the frame and removed, so as to facilitate thoroughly cleansing it or replacing it with a new or different cup, as required.
The follower D is preferably and conveniently made of sheet metal, also with flanges 1 1 at its lateral edges to stiffen it and with a sleeve 15 integral therewith to embrace the pintle 3, so that the latter shall support the follower all the way across the cup. In said wide-open condition of the press, Figs. 1 and 2, the pintle 3 and the pin 10 can readily be pulled out and all the parts of the press thus separated, and the parts of presses of a given size being made interchangeable with each other the press can readily be repaired at trifling expense when otherwise it would be necessary to throw it away as useless.
The follower-brace 6 in the construction shown in the drawings is made with lateral arms a and b, Fig. 5, rendering it T-shaped, and these arms are soldered fast to the extremity of the follower D, that is supported by this brace.
The brace 6 can obviously be otherwise at tached both to the lever-piece B and to the follower D. The locking projection 12 and the opposing spring 13 may be at opposite sides of the cup 0 instead of at its front and back, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in-the art.
IIO
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification 1.
