To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD R. MoFFA'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnetic Ore- Separators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to magnetic ore-separators; and its object is to produce a greater product in concentrates and a lower loss of values in the separating of magnetic particles from non-magnetic matter, as also to produce a more satisfactory output in quantity, as Well as in quality. than is attained by other known separating apparatus.
To this end the invention consists in a novel construction whereby the magnetic energy is utilized in a highly advantageous manner within a working field extending over a great operating-surface, where the forces of gravitation, centrifugal repulsion, and magnetic attraction are utilized in producing separation. The form which my apparatus will preferably take consists of two rotating drums or endless conveyers disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane and having within each drum a battery of stationary electroto increase the effective working field of force, I provide a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line or plane of rotation of the same and provided with curvilinear converging sides. To prevent the magnetites from adhering to the said magnetic bridge, I interpose a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the bridge, with deflectors for returning the material to the drums.
The particular-features of construction and arrangement of parts used are also of value in themselves, notably in providing a battery of stationary electromagnets in each drum connected to exterior electromagnets arranged on both sides of the machine and running transversely of the supporting-shaft of the drum,
and by forming the supporting-frame of the machine into a continuous yoke of the several magnets, thereby forming an intensely strong field.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the non-magnetic shield. Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view of one of the standards rising from the standard-blocks. Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
D and D indicate two rotating drums mounted loosely on the stationary shafts C and disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, their axes of rotation being preferably in the same horizontal plane. These drums are preferably made of sheet material mounted on heads of wood. Mounted on each of the said stationary shafts is a battery of electromagnets M, composed of a number of individual magnets, whose cores M are provided with apertures M by means of which the said magnets are mounted on the shaft O and securedin position by means of set-screws M*. The pole-pieces M extend circumferentially above and below the magnets for a considerable distance so as to give a large field of force. The polarity of the magnets in one drum is preferably of opposite nature to that of the magnets in the other drum. Interposed between adjacent magnets are the filletwashers O for properly spacing the parts. Interposed between the heads of the drum and the shaft 0 and adjacent to the two outermost magnets are the hubs D, carrying the pulleys D for imparting motion to the drums.
The ends of the shafts O rest in the socket B of the standard-blocks B, of which latter there are four, one at each end of each shaft G. Extending transversely on either side of the drums D and D are the exterior electromagnets A, whose shafts A rest in the sockets B of the standard-blocks B at right angles to the sockets B. The electromagnets A have a wire running from their coils through an aperture O, extending axially through the shaft C and then at right angles inside of the drums, connecting the various coils of the inside battery of magnets with the two exterior magnets, so as to produce magnets of one polarity in one drum and of an opposed polarity in the other drum. It will be understood that the shaft 0 forms the yoke of the battery of the interior electromagnets and that the shaft A forms the yoke of the exterior electromagnets. By supporting these two yokes in the metallic standard-blocks B the whole framework supporting the working parts of the machine forms substantially one continuous yoke, thereby intensifying the field considerably.
Above the drums I mount the feed-hoppers H and H and provide the same with the feedrollers H, which are driven in unison with the drums by means of the pulleys H and belts H. Power is applied to the apparatus as a whole in any suitable way.
Rising from the standard-blocks B are the standards E and attached to the former by means of the bolts 0*. Suitable cross-bars, as G, connect the said standards and serve to support the feed-hoppers.
It will be understood that the intensity of the field between the drums is greatest at the point where they converge most closely, the magnetic force or lines gradually growing weaker as the distance between the two drums increases. In order to increase the effective working field of the apparatus and to reduce the magnetic resistance between the two drums at the point where they diverge from each other, I interpose between the said drums a magnetic bridge F, whose sides are convergingly curvilinear to correspond with the curvature of the drums. This bridge F is suitably supported on the cross-bars C, which are mounted on the sleeves E, vertically adjustable on the standards E and properly held in position on the said cross-bars by means of the bushings C and screws O connecting with the projections E on the said bridge. By adjusting this said-magnetic bridge vertically the effectiveness of the field can be varied. The result of this magnetic bridge is to distribute the density of the field more evenly over a very large working surface, so as to give the apparatus-an opportunity for more thoroughly separating the magnetites from the ore. In order, however, that the said magnetites shall not cling to the said magnetic bridge, I interpose a non-magnetic shield G on the active faces of the magnetic bridge, and havinga plurality of deflectors G, whereby the particles are returned several times to the drums. Below the two drums I provide different compartments, as N, N, and N for properly collecting the non-magnetic matter and the magnetites into separate heaps.
The distance between the two drums can be varied by loosening the bolts B which serve to hold the shafts A in position, and by moving the said drums close or farther apart, as the case may be, thereby increasing or decreasing the intensity of the field.
What I claim is 1. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.-
2. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
3. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.
4:. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a verticallyadjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.
5. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilineardirection and whose IIO axes of rotation are'in the same horizontal ferentially above and below the said magnets,
plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.
6. In a magnetic ore-separator. the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a verticallyadjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.
7. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said. magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line'of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
8. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane. a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
9. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane. a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, pole pieces on the said magnets extending circuma magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.
10. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets, extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance,and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge. v
11. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.
12. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.
13. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the twodrums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
14. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
15. In amagnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on thesaid magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.
16. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.
17. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plu rality of deflectors for returning the material -to the faces of the drums.
18. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationaryelectromagnets arranged within each drum, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.
19. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a magnetic bridge having converginglycurvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.
20. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, and a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergiugly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance.

In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between thetwo drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.

In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to tion and converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets, extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge.

In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, a battery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, polepieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.

In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a battery of stationary electromagnets of one polarity in one of said drums, abattery of stationary electromagnets of an opposed polarity in the other of the said drums, pole-pieces on the said magnets extending circumferentially above and below the said magnets, a vertically-adjustable magnetic bridge having convergingly-curvilinear sides interposed in the field of force between the two drums above the axial line of the same for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non magnetic shield on the active faces of the said magnetic bridge, having a plurality of deflectors for returning the material to the faces of the drums.

In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating magnetic drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, stationary magnets located within the said drums, and a magnetic bridge located in the field of force between the said drums above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance.
26. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating magnetic drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direcwhose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, stationary magnets located within and without the said drums, and a magnetic bridge located in the field of force between the said drums above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance.
27. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating magnetic drums, disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, stationary magnets located within the said drums, a magnetic bridge located in the field of force between the said drums and above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a nonmagnetic guard on the active faces of the said bridge.
28. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of two rotating magnetic drums disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, stationary magnets located within and without the said drums, a magnetic bridge located in the field of force between the said drums above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance, and a non-magnetic guard on the active faces of the said bridge.
29. In a magnetic oreseparator, the combination of a framework, two stationary shafts,
two rotating drums for separating the material on the said shafts disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, a magnetic bridge interposed between the said drums in the field of force above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance, means whereby the distance between the drums can be increased or decreased, and'means for vertically adjusting the said magnetic bridge.
30. In a magnetic ore-separator, the combination of a framework, two stationary shafts, two rotating drums for separating the material on the shafts disposed so as to converge in a curvilinear direction, and whose axes of rotation are in the same horizontal plane, two standard-blocks at each end ofthe drums having transverse sockets, one of which supports the ends of the stationary shafts, two electromagnets disposed at right angles to the drums at either side of the same and adjustably supported in the other of the two transverse sockets of the standard-blocks, whereby the distance between the two drums can be increased or decreased, and a magnetic bridge interposed between the said drums in the field of force above the plane of rotation for reducing the magnetic resistance.v
