1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 'S. PETERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Damper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a damper for a stove, furnace, &c., adapted to work sensitively and possess simplicity, compactness, strength, and durability, and other advantages are presented, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a damper embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on line a: a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a detached portion. Fig. 4 represents a section of a portion on line 9 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the device on a reduced scale and shown in operative position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a collar capable of being attached to the branch 2 of a smoke pipe or flue 3 of a furnace, stove, &c., the fire of which is regulated by my device. On the outer end of the collar is the inturned flange 4, in the upper portion of which at opposite places are the recesses 5, the metal or material of which is punched outwardly, forming the lips or fulcra 6 for the damper 7, the latter consisting of a plate of suitable metal or material, which is adapted to abut against the inner face of the flange 4, thus closing the damper or swing inwardly therefrom, as shown by the arrow, Fig. 2, thus opening the damper and admitting air into the pipe 3 for evident purposes.
The plate of which the damper is constructed has a horizontally-extending crimp 8, forming an offset, the terminals of which have recesses 9 therein, the upper wall 10 of which projects outwardly, so as to overlap the adjacent portion of the flange 4 of the collar 1, the bottom of said wall presenting a flat edge 11, which I denominate the pivots of the damper, the same resting freely on the lips 6,
whereby the damper is adapted to oscillate with sensitiveness owing to the comparatively small frictional contact of said lips and pivots. It
will also be seen that in assembling the device a recess 9 inthe damper-plate is presented to a recess 5 of the flange 4, when by moving the plate--say to the left' the part of the plate below the ofl set 8 may enter the collar 1 behind said flange 4, while the part of the same above said offset is in front of or outside of said flange, and the left-hand pivot is rested on the contiguous lip 6. Owing to the play afforded by the recesses 5 and 9, the plate may be moved to the right, when the pivot thereat may be seated on the lip 6 beneath it, and thus the damper is properly hung and supported and adapted to operate, as above stated.
Rising from the top of the damper-plate and secured thereto is the screw-rod 12, on which are the separate weights 13 and 14, which may be screwed up and down so as to adjust the balance of the plate with nicety for adjusting the damper to a predetermined pressure of air on the exterior ofthe lower portion of the damper, so that the damper may be opened and closed relatively to the condition of the tire, and thus preserve an equable condition of the latter. It will be also seen that the plate has its pivots integral therewith, the collar having its fulcra or bearings for said pivots also integral with the flange thereof, thus'reducing the expense of manufacture, while also rendering the device simplein construction, while the ofiset 8 permits the damper-plate 7 to be partly outside and partly inside of the flange 4, thus exposing the larger surface of said plate to the action of the pressure of the atmosphere and assisting to render the damper sensitive to action under all conditions of the lire in the stove, furnace, &c.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.
