Description
UNITED sTA Es PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD SCHADE VAN WESTRUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METHOD OF COLLECTING AND PREVENTING THE DlSSEMINATlON 0F DUST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed January 24, 1905. Serial No. 242,582.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD SCHADE VAN VVEsTRUM, a sub ect of the Emperor of Germany, residing at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel,
in the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Collecting and Preventing the Dissemination of Dust; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a process of collecting or binding dust in the interior of buildings such as dwellings, schools, factories, &c. and has for its object to provide a process whereby all or nearly all the dust can be collected in a cheap, easy, and convenient manner.
Hitherto it has been attempted to collect dust in the interiors of buildings by non-drying oils applied to the floors; but this has been abandoned for the reason that the oil is thick and does not penetrate evenly and properly into the floor, which has the effect of making the floor slippery and ultimately forming a thick crust of dirt with the dust taken up thereby, At intervals, therefore, it was necessary to wash or scrub the oil and dirt from the floor with soda and soap, which made the process not only expensive, but extremely inconvenient. To overcome these disadvantages, an oily product may be used which is readily soluble in water or emulsifiable therebyas, for instance, the oily products described in the patents to Weygang, No. 575,189, and to Boleg, No. 761,939.
In practical application of my process I may take one of these oils-such as, for example, that of Weygang, No. 57 5,189admix the same with, say, seventy-five to eighty per cent. of water and rub the floor well therewith, rubbing it into the wood as far as possible and wiping away the excess with a cloth. It will be found that the watery oil goes into the pores of the wood, filling the same and dislodging the dirt, and that the dirt is removed by the cloth. To preserve the floor clean, it is treated in the same way from time to time, but using weaker solutions.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The method of treating and cleaning floors, collecting binding and removing dust therefrom in the interior of buildings which consists of first treating the floors with an emulsion of water and oil, rubbing in the same until the emulsion is well embedded therein, then wiping oif the dust and excess ofemulsion, and rubbing the floor until it is dry.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEONARD SCHADE VAN WESTRUM.
Witnesses:
