Description

W. 0. HARRISON.
Harvester.
Patented July 2 1, 1868;
.PEIERS. PmmuHoGRAPNEH. WASHINGTON, Dv C4 @stuiten tetes gnirnt @frn WILLIAM o. Harrelson, -or GHITTENDN, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 80,170, dated July 21, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT In HARVESTERS.
,TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. HARRISON, of Chittenden, in' the county of Rutland, and State of Vermont, have invented a new andimproved Hedge-Trimmer, and Mowing and Reaping-Machine; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, forming;r part of this specication, iu which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved mowing-machine, the plane of section being indicated by the line z, tig. 2. m
. Figure2 is a plan or top view of the same. Figure 3 is a detail under side view of thesame.
Figure 4 is n. detail vertical section of the same, taken on the plane `of the line yy, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts;
A, in the drawing, represents the frame of a mowing or reaping-machine, supported by two driving-wheels, Bi and'C, of which one is mounted, and the other hung on a horizontal shaft, D, as shown. i
Upon the shaft D is also mounted a bevel or other gear-wheel, E. which meshes into the teeth of a pinion, a, that is fitted around an arbor, b, so that it can slide on the same. I
AIn tig. 3, the arrangement of the pinion a and arbor b is best shown.
The arbor can revolve in its bearings, and has a shoulder, c, between which andthe pinion a, a spiral spring, d, is arranged, which serves to press the pinion against a clutch, e, that is formed on the arbor Zr,'as shown. l'
When the pinion is, by means of the clutch, locked together with the arbor, it will impart its own mot-ion to the sameybut when, by means of a lever, F, the pinion is drawn off the clutch, as in tig. 3, the arbor will remain stationary, although the pi-nion is revolved by means of the gear-wheel E'.
On the arbor b is firmly fixed a suitable gear-wheel, G, which meshes into a pnion,f,4that is mounted on or near the end of a shaft, H. I
The shaft II has its bearing near one end of the frame A, which is opposite to where the cutter-bar is arranged in a block, g, that is hinged lo the under side of the frameA, as'shown in iig. `1. 4
The free end of the shaft II canthus be moved up or down at will, which can be doneby means of a suitable lever, I, or other equivalent device, without bringing the pinionsf and out of gear.
V The free end of the shaft H may also be supported in a block or biocks, z, which are attached to and project from a bai', z', which connects the blocks 7L and g.
The finger-bar J is hinged with one end to theV free end of the shaft II, so that itcan turn on the same, and can also be raised or lowered with the same by means of the lever G.
The finger-bar maybe of ordinary or suitable construction.
Upon its face rests a cutter-bar, L, of suitable construction, carrying a slotted block, Z, into which a crankpin, m, projecting from a'crank or wheel, n, mounted on the end of the shaft H, is fitted.
Thus lthe cutter-bar will, as the shaftH is revolved, receive reciprocating motion, and will work as easily in any position of the finger-bar, the strain on the connectinfr-rod being not at all experienced in this machine.
The tingcr-bar may be arranged in front or rear of the frame, and the connection' of the shaft H with the gear-wheel E may be arranged in any other suitable manner, instead of that herein described.
The connectionof the cutter-bar with the shaft II may be arranged otherwise than shown, with equal result.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the gear-wheel G, constructed as described, hinged block g, extension bearing 7l, pinion f, and shaft II, pivotinr the finger-bar to the machine, all constructed and operating as herein described.
