Description

A. FOOT'. Ha'rvester Gearing. No. 88,951. l Patented April 13, 1869I UNITED .STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
AMASA FOOT, OF EARLVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES R. OOOK,
OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK. l
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 88,951, dated April 13, 1869.
To all lwhom it may concern: y Beit known that I, AMAsA FooT, of Earlville, in the county of La Salle and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reaping and Mowing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specication, in which- A is a frame of usual form. B is the groimd or driving wheel, the shaft O of which is mounted in boxes D D, bolted to the frame A. E is an internal gear-wheel made fast to the arms of the ground-wheel B by means of screwbolts.
Thus far the machine is constructed like other machines of the kind now in use.
F is a spur-pinion on shaft G, of usual form except that it is longer7 to permit an endwise movement without being thrown out of gear with internal gear-wheel E, the arms of the ground-wheel being cut away, so as not to interfere with said pinion when moved in so as to face on the outside with internal gear-wheel E. H I are two bevel-wheels on pinion-shaft Gr, which has its bearings in the boxes J K, bolted fast to the frame A. L M are two beveled pinions on crank-shaft N, which has its bearings inthe boxes O and I,'made fast to the frame by means of bolts. Q is a crank to which the pitman is attached, said pitman bein'g also attached to the sickle or cutting bar in the usual manner.
By means of a lever, S, the shaft G, with the pinion F and beveled wheels H I, is moved toward the ground-wheel to throw the beveled wheel H out of gear with pinion L, and at the same time, if desired, to throw the beveled wheel I in gear with the pinion M 5 or the lever may be retained in a central position on the pin T, and both beveled wheels vII and I will be thrown out of gear. VThe object of this arrangement is to combine in one machine the dierent motions of the sickle necessary for the cutting of both grain and grass, or to the varying condition of either, and thus to fully secure the objects of a combined reaper and mower. y
When cutting standing grain, the adjustment isnsuch as to place the bevel-wheel H in gear with pinion L, thereby giving a motion to the sickle suitable for cutting standing grain; and when cutting lodged or tangled grain or grass, by means of the lever S the bevel-Wheel II is moved out of gear with pinion L, and at the same time bevel-wheel I is thrown into gear with pinion M, thus giving a much quicker motion to the sickle, and adapting it to the work required of it. A
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Two driving gears oi' unequal size, in combination with two pinions for varying the speed of vibration of the cutters.
2. Rotating the crank-.shaft by either one of two in dependent eoncentriebevel drivinggears of unequal size.
3. Two bevel-pinions on the crank-shaft, arranged outside of the journal-bearing of said shaft.
AMAsA rooT.
