Be it known that I, JULES DHoNn'r, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of Roubaix, Nord, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J acquard Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to jacquard mechanisms for looms, and particularly to improvements in means for actuating the liftinghooks so that the shed will be formed in an effective manner, the object of the invention being the provision of mechanism whereby open sheds may be formed with greater speed than was possible heretofore.
The invention also contemplates the provision of mechanism which will produce a perfect weave while obviating to a maximum degree the liability of breaking the threads; and to these ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate two knife-bars, which are alternately lifted and lowered by a suitable mechanism which forms no part of the present invention. These bars are provided with suitable knives adapted to engage the noses a and b, which are formed upon the ends of the two legs of the lifting-hook J, one of said legs being somewhat shorter than the other, as shown. The bar A serves to raise the book by means of its knife engaging the nose a on the shorter leg of the same, while the bar B is operable to lower the book by means of the nose 6 on the longer leg thereof. The hook J is mounted in a suitable bearing S, consisting of a laterally-movable rod connected at its lower end to a support E and provided at its upper end with a keeper C, in which the hook J is slidable in upward and downward direction, said bearing-rod S being connected at a point in proximity to the keeper G with the needle D,
so that upon the actuation of said needle said bearing-rod is moved laterally.
The lifting-hook J is provided at the intermediate portion of each leg with shoulders P P, the shoulder P being formed in the shorter leg of the hook and arranged at an obtuse an gle with respect to the upper and lower portions of said leg, while the shoulder P, which is formed in the longer leg of the hook, is disposed at approximately right angles to the leg in which it is formed. The shoulder P is of greater length than the shoulder P, as clearly shown in Fig. t. The shoulder P is adapted to cooperate with the keeper C in order to retain the hook in raised position, while the shoulder P cooperates with one wall of a suitable boxing F, in which the upper portion of the bearing-rod S is retained, said shoulder P in bearing against said boxing operating to release the nose (1 from the knife on the lifting-bar A, as shown in Fig. 2. The liftinghook J when in lowered position rests upon a suitable rest-board F, which is perforated, as shown, to allow the passage of the loom-harness attached to the lower end of said hook, or any other suitable support for said hook when in lowered position may be provided.
The operation of the improved mechanism is as follows: When the cylinder or other card-presenting device pushes the card against the needle D and said needle is engaged by a perforation in said card, the needle does not push back the carrier which it drives and the knife-bar A engages the nose (1, and thereby raises the lifting-hook. At the end of the lifting stroke the shoulder P abuts against the boxing F and causes the nose 0 to be released, as shown in Fig. 2, while the shoulder P engages the keeper C of the bearing S, and thus retains the lifting-hook in this position as long as the needle D engages the perforations ot'the cards. The book J in being raised carries with it its warp-thread and forms the shed in the well-known manner. \Vhen an imperforate portionof the card is presented to the needle D, the latter is pushed back and moves the bearing S with it, so that the engagement between the shoulder P and the keeper C is released and the lifting-hook is let down by the knife-bar B, which engages the nose 6, as shown in Fig. 3.
In order to adjust the shed to any desired degree, the support E F may be made adjustable vertically, as usual.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that a mechanisinhas been provided by means of which the shed can be readily formed. The connection of the needle to the bearing for the lifting-hook rather than to the hooks themselves has been found to be advantageous, and the construction of lifting-hook with the shoulders thereon for engagement with the bearing and the boxing has been found to be of particular merit in eflecting the eflicient and reliable raising and lowering of said hooks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In ajacquard mechanism, a lifting-hook, and a bearing-rod therefor.
2. In a jacquard mechanism, a lifting-hook, and a laterally-movable bearing-rod therefor.
8. In a jacquard mechanism, a needle, a bearing-rod actuated thereby, and a liftinghook mounted in said bearing-rod.
4. In a jacquard mechanism, the combination, with a needle, of a movable bearing-rod connected therewith, a lifting-hook movable in said bearing-rod, and means for raising and lowering said hook.
5. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination, with the needle, of a bearingrod movable laterally thereby, a lifting-hook movable in said bearing-rod, and means for raising and lowering said hook.
6. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination, with the needle, of an upright horizontally-movable bearing-rod connected therewith, a lifting-hook movable in said bearing-rod, and means for raising and lowering said hook.
7 In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination, with the needle, of an upright bearing-rod movable laterally thereby and provided with a keeper, a vertically-movable lifting-hook movable in said keeper, and means for raising and lowering said hook.
8. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, a needle, an upright bearing-rod laterally movable thereby and provided at its upper end with a keeper, and a lifting-hook movable in said keeper.
9. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination, with a needle, of a bearing-rod connected therewith and provided with a terminal keeper, a lifting-hook movable in said keeper, and means for raising and lowering said hook.
10. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination,with a needle, of a movable bearing-rod connected therewith, a keeperon said bearing-rod, a lifting-hook movable in said keeper and provided with a shoulder for engagement therewith so as to retain said lifting-hook in raised position, and means for raising and lowering said hook and for causing the engagement of said shoulder with said keeper.
11. In a jacquard'mechanism for looms, the combination, with a needle, of a movable bearing-rod connected therewith, a keeper on said bearing-rod, a lifting-hook movable in said keeper and provided with an intermediate shoulder, a stationary boxing in proximity to said keeper, and separate means for raising and lowering said hook, the shoulder on the latter being operable to engage said boxing and thereby release said book from said raising means.
12. In a jacquard mechanism for looms, the combination, with a needle, of a movable bearing-rod connected therewith, a keeper on said bearing-rod, a boxing in proximity to said keeper, a lifting-hook movable in the latter and provided with shoulders, and separate means governed by said needle for raising and lowering said hook, one of the shoulders on the latter being operable to engage said boxing and thereby release the hook from said lifting means, and the other shoulder to engage said keeper and thereby maintain the hook in raised position.
