"Be it known thatI, F. DAvisoN, of Richmorid, in the county of Henrico, and in the State of Virginia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail and Tack-Machines ,and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings, and tothe lettersof reference markedthereon.
The nature of my invention consistse in an oscillating feeding-apparatus on a nail-niaehine, by which thev plate from which the nails are cut feeds itself, and by its vibrating or oscillating motion gives' proper taper to I the nail, and also in thep'unch for making the head of the-nail.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction andoperation, referring to theann'ex'ed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whiehi I Figure l is a side view, Figure 2 a plan view, and Figure 3 a sidefsectionof the nail-machine.

A represents the 'body or frame o the machine, resting on legs B B, and made'of any material suitable,
and of-any dimensions required.
The shaft a, in the rear end of this frame, has its bearings in the sides thereof, and is provided -on itscentre with a cam-wheel, C, and its ends extending `through the'sides of said frame, have cog-wheelsD D thereon, one of thel'n being, in addition, provided with a crank, E, for operating the machine. v 4
F is a connectingrod, one end of which is round, and surrounds the eam-whe'el O, and the other ispvoted to the slide G, which slide runs on flanges b b on the inside of the frame. 'Thecuttingknife c' isplaced hor'il zontally bn this slide, and securely fastened thereto, so that by turning the crank E, said knife is Vmoved'back ward and forward.

On the frontend ofthe frame, and in front of the cutting-knife c, is across-bar, L, tothe rear' side of which Van angular b ar,e, is secured in such a manner as to form a slot between saidlgbar and cross-piece." In tlxe slot thus formed the lower end of the tube Mis pivoted, lsaid tube being constructediwith arms N N extending on each` side above said angular bar, which arms have gauge-screws ff-ahtheir ends.
In this tube the plate-g, from .which the nails are to be cut, is inserted, and its own weight carries it dow'nward, thus making it self-feeding. i
On the Arear side of the cross-bar L is a stationary knife, h, so arranged that the metal plate y,in descending, comes close along said knife, and the movable knife c will come close up under it.
Underthe movablc'cutting-knife c is a guide, c', extending forward on to the roller O, which'latter has` female dies on its periphery, and is secured on alshaft, m. "This shaft has its bearings in thesides of tlreframe A, and is turned by means of a. ratch-wheel, P, on thesame, and sprin'g-pawl k attached to the lever Q. VThis lever being connected with the rod F, yby means ofthe Pitman-rod R, it will be seen that the motion of said rod F also turns the roller Oi Above and a little forward of said roller is another roller, S, which has -male dies on its peripherycorrcspending to the female dies on the roller O, andis secured to a shaft, n, which has itsfbearings in slots on the frame A, and against the adjustable slides T T in the same.
Under the cross-bar L-is a spring, l, whiehextends forward over the roller O, till near the point where it meets the roller S.
Qn the upper sides of the slide J, bent arms X extend forward, and when said slides alternately move forward, one of these1 arms strikes theVgauge-s-cr'ewfon the arm N, thus tipping the tube M over, thereby giving a slanting position to the plate g, so that when the same'is cut oifit has the proper taper -for a nail.

Thisimaehine makes edge-pressecl nails, and to make side-pressed nails it is only necessary to place the roller S perpendicularly above the roller 0, when the cutting-knife c will Vitself deposit the nails in the dies sideways, insteadof letting the spring Z deposit them, the pressure of said spring turning them on the edge.
Having thus fullydescrihed my invention, what I claim 4as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the eha-nnelled plate-holder M, slotted angular bar E, and vibrating-arms N N,all constructed, arranged, and operating. substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
v 2. The combinatio'n of the sliding inclines X, adjustingfsorews ff, vibrating-arms N N, and angular bar E, to ndjust the plate at different angles, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
B v'lhe combination'of the chonuelled plate-holder M, slotted angular bar E, vibrating-arms N N, andv knives C c, to produce a wedge-shaped blank, in the manner specified.
