4 TOBACCO PIPE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1905;
Application filed July 1, 1904. Serial No. 214,886.
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WELLNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of pipes in which the bowl is made reversible on its seat at one end of the stem to adapt it when the pipe is smoked down nearly to the base of the bowl to be reversed to enable the fire remaining in it to serve for lighting a fresh charge of tobacco; and it relates, furthermore, to the class of pipes in which a chamber in the base of the bowl, separated therefrom by a perforated diaphragm and to which the stem leads, is provided to hold an absorbent medium for the objectionable fiuid which results from smoking tobacco in the pipe to intercept it against ac cess through the stem to the mouth of the smoker.
The object of my improvement is to provide a thoroughly-sanitary tobacco-pipe of a construction embodying all of the advantages of the pipes hitherto provided in the classes thereof referred to with none of their disadvantages, the separable parts of which shall be of generous proportions to render them readily accessible for purposes of cleaning.
To this end my invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved pipe; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the reversible bowl; Fig. 3, a similar view of the metal bowl-seat with an integral stem-section extending from it; Fig. 4, a similar view of a cap for confining a tablet of absorbent material provided with a perforated top and adapted to enter and be releasably locked in the chamber in the bowlseat, from which the aforesaid stem-section leads; Fig. 5, a similar view of a ring for lining the bowl-seat and wall of the chamber therein, and Fig. 6 a similar view of a vented cover for either end of the bowl adapted to be releasably secured thereon.
A is the bowl of the pipe, open at both ends and formed of corn-cob, brier-Wood, Ineerschaum, or any other suitable material. Each open end of the bowl, the interior of which should be of the same or substantially the same diameter throughout, terminates in an metrically opposite points on each collar studs- Z) project outwardly for a purpose herein after explained.
B is the annular bowl-seat, formed of sheet metal, preferably by stamping, or of clay,
-with a circumferential flange 0 about an offset or shoulder d, projecting outwardly from the upper edge of the chamber and forming the annular seat proper, shown slightly depressed to conform to the convex shape of the outer edge of each collar on the bowl and having formed in it opposite cam-grooves 6" 6, each terminating at its tapering end in an offset Z1 in the flange, these offsets being diametrically opposite each other. Below the planeof the seat proper is the chamber 6 for the absorbent medium, from which the section f of the pipe-stem C extends, being preferably formed integral with the bowl base or seat. The chamber 6 is of generous proportions, being of about the same diameter as the chamber in the bowl, and it is lined with areinforcing metal ring 9, having studs it projecting inwardly from it at diametrically opposite points, and an annular flange 9 ex tends from the outer edge of the ring over the seat proper, (Z, to conform to the latter and to which it is secured.
D is a sheet-metal or clay cap comprising a ring 2', containing in opposite sides similar bayonet-joint slots like that shown at it in Fig. 4, but only one of which is represented owing to the nature of the View selected for illustration, and a perforated top Z to cover the chamber 0 and form the base of the bowl A when adjusted in position, as hereinafter described. The cap is adapted to hold confinedly a supply of suitable material readily absorbent of the liquid generated in the pipe by smoking it and which is preferably provided in the form of a tablet m to snugly fit within the cap, which is adjustable in place by introducing the ring 2' into the chamber 6 in a manner to engage its bayonet-slots it with the studs it, when a slight turn of the cap looks it in place to be readily unlocked for removal by turning it in the opposite direction and withdrawing it.
The mouthpiece-section f of the stem C, which may be formed of any suitable mate- 'rial and of any desired shape, is removably inserted at one end into the outer end of the stem-section f, the bore of which is amply large to render it conveniently accessible for cleaning.
E is a metal cover for the bowl A for use whenever desired, as and for the purpose hereinafter described, provided with vent-holes a2,
and adapted to be releasably locked upon either end of the bowl by providing in its circular flange portion 0 cam-grooves p. To apply the cover, its flange is caused to overlap the respective bowl-collar a or a, with the studs 6 thereon registering with the insertion ends of the grooves p,whereupon by turning the cover the grooves travel along the studs to lock it in place.
In smoking this pipe the objectionable fluid hereinbefore referred to is absorbed by the tablet m, which may be renewed from time to time on removing and replacing the cap D, which operations may be readily performed in the manner described. The bowl A forms at either end a close-fitting junction with its seat (composed of the parts g and (Z in the preferred construction illustrated) without requiring any packing to be interposed because of the accuracy of forming the parts by my improved construction thereof. Moreover, the parts are readily separable without requiring the aid to that end of any implement, and the comparatively large dimensions of the chamber 6, cap D, and stem-section f render them so readily accessible for cleaning that the pipe may be kept clean, and therefore sanitary, without trouble. By providing the cover E to interlock with either end of the bowl it adapts the pipe for use in the open air, as in the wind, or to be carried while lighted in the pocket of the user, whichever end of the bowl happens to be seated on the base B, and, with the cover in place, when the pipe is nearly smoked out the smoker may on turning the bowl off its seat stuff the contents of the bowl against the cover and introduce a charge of fresh tobacco into the bowl from its opposite end to be lighted by the remnant by drawing on the stem after the bowl is replaced in the same position from which it was removed for refilling from its lower open end. I What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a tobacco-pipe, the combination of a bowl-base containing a chamber formedwith a bowl-seat surrounding said chamber and a bowl-locking flange about said seat, a ring lining the chamber-wall and provided with a flange covering said seat, a stem-section extending from said base, a perforated cap for absorbent material in said chamber and means for releasably interlocking it with said ring, and a reversible bowl terminating at each end in an edge-binding collar fitting said ringflange and provided with means for engaging with said bowl-locking flange to releasabl y interlock the bowl therewith, substantially as described.
2. In a tobacco-pipe, the combination of a bowl-base containing a chamber formed with a bowl-seat surrounding said chamber and a flange about said seat provided with camgrooves, a ring lining the chamber-wall and provided with a flange covering said seat and with inwardly-projecting studs, a cap for absorbent material, comprising a perforated top and a flange depending therefrom and provided with bayonet-joint slots to engage with the studs on said ring, and a reversible bowlterminating at each end in an edge-binding collar fitting said ring-flange and provided with studs to engage with said grooves for releasably interlocking the bowl with the base, substantially as described.
