To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. DEGNER, a
.citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Curtain-Rod and Supporting-Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in combined curtain-rods and supportingbrackets therefor.
The main object of the invention is the production of a combined curtain-rod and bracket made adjustable to fit windows of different sizes and which is supported by the windowcasing in a manner to permit the lowering of the curtain-rod into a convenient position for applying or attaching the curtain.
The invention comprises duplicate members adjustably connected, each constructed of a single length of Wire and arranged to be readily secured to or detached from the window-casing.
The invention is fully illustrated in detail in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing my improved device in place on a window-casing and supporting a curtain. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the curtain omitted and the device in lowered position. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the device detached, the supporting-arms being broken off.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a window-casing to which the combined rod and bracket is to be applied.
The combined rod and bracket is made in duplicate parts adjustably connected, each constructed of a single length of wire. As the parts are duplicates, a detail-description of one only is necessary.
A suitable length of wire is formed with an eye 2 at one end, and a suitable distance from this eye to leave a vertical supporting arm or member 3 the wire is bent forwardly and outwardly, as at 4, then laterally at about right angles with arm 3 for a short distance, then bent rearwardly upon itself, as at 6, and projected parallel with and contiguous the part 5 to form a horizontal curtain-holding arm or member 7, a narrow space 8 being left between members 5 and 7 as shown. Hence arms 3 and 4, one vertical and the other horizontal, are provided, which are joined at their contiguous ends by an offset uniting or connecting portion comprising an oblique member A, laterally deflected outwardly and forwardly from the arm 3, and a return-bend portion 6, connecting said-memberi with the arms 7, said return-bend member 6 forming a receiving-recess 8 of greater length than width, lying at right angles to the vertical arm and outwardly beyond the same, with its major axis parallel with the axis of the horizontal arm. The meeting ends of the member 7 are connected by a sleeve 9 to permit the sliding adjustment of member 7 with relation to each other, whereby to increase or decrease the width of the combined rod and bracket to suit the requirements of the particular window. The forwardly-projecting member 4 maintains the curtain-rod, which comprises members 7 and sleeve 9, the proper distance from the window-casing to secure proper set of the curtain. Eyes 2 at the lower end of supporting-rods 3 are connected to eyes 10, fixed in the window-casing, whereby to pivotally support the device. The bend forming the junction between the member 4 and the supporting-rod 3 is utilized to receive one end of the adjusting-cord 11, which passes through eyes 12, fixed in the casing, and depends alongside the bracket to a suitable securing means 13. It is understood, of course, that there may be two ropes 11, one secured to each part of the device and both depending on the same side of the bracket, or a single operatingcord may be secured to one part of the combined rod and bracket and connected to an additional cord leading to the other part of the device.
The curtain is to be secured to a rod formed by the members 7 and the sleeve 9, as shown in Fig. 1, the side edges of the curtain projecting within the narrow space 8 between members 5 and 7. As this space is arranged laterally of the supporting-arm 3 and projects outwardly therefrom, the curtain will in front view cover the supporting-arm 3, the pivotal connection of the same to the casing, and the operating-cord 11 thus screen these parts from view.
On release of the operating-cord the combined rod and bracket may be lowered outwardly and downwardly on the pivotal connection 10 to position the curtain-rod within convenient reach to permit ready application or removal of the curtain, as will be evident.
WVhile I have shown and described the combined rod and bracket as made in two parts adjustably connected and prefer such construction, yet it is evident that for a particular window the device may be entirely constructed from a single length of wire, and I contemplate such as within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined curtain-rod and bracket made in two parts, each constructed of a single length of wire, bent at one end to form an eye, then projected upwardly to torm a vertical arm, then projected forwardly, then bent laterally and formed in a return-bend upon itself to form a contracted curtain-receiving space and finally projected at right angles to said vertical arm to form a horizontal arm, and means adjustably connecting the horizontal arms of said parts.
2. A combined curtain -rod and bracket made in two parts, each part having an attaching portion and a horizontal curtain-supporting portion, said portions being joined at their contiguous ends by an offset uniting or connecting portion comprising an oblique member laterally and forwardly deflected from the attaching portion, and a returnbend connccting said member with the horizontal supporting portion and forming a contracted recess having a major axis lying at right angles to the vertical attaching portion and parallel with the axis of the horizontal supporting portion, and means for adjustably connecting the horizontal supporting portions of the two parts.
3. A combined curtain rod and bracket comprising a horizontal curtain supporting portion, vertical attaching portions and connecting portions joining the contiguous ends of the curtain supporting and attaching portions, each connecting portion consisting of an oblique member laterally and forwardly deflected from the attaching portion, and a return-bend connecting said member with the horizontal supporting portion and forming a contracted recess having its major axis lying at right angles to the vertical attaching portion and parallel with the aXis of the horizontal supporting portion, substantially as described.
4. A combined curtain rod and bracket made in two parts, each having a horizontallyarranged curtain-supporting member and a vertically-arranged attaching member pivotally connected with the window-casing, said members being connected at their contiguous ends by an ofiset connecting portion comprising an oblique member laterally and forwardly deflected from the attaching member, and a return-bend connecting said member with the horizontal supporting member and forming a contracted recess having its major axis lying at right angles to the attaching member and parallel with the axis of the horizontal supporting member, and means for adjustably connecting the curtain-supporting members of the two parts.
5. A combined curtain-rod and bracket made in two parts, each consisting of asinglc length of wire bent to form a vertical pivotarm and a horizontal curtain-supporting arm, said arms being united at their contiguous ends by a connecting portion comprising an oblique member laterally and forwardly deflected from the pivot-arm, and a return-bend connecting said member with the curtain-supporting arm and forming a contracted recess having its major aXis lying at right angles to the vertical arm and parallel with the axis of the horizontal arm, and means for adjustably connecting the horizontal arms of the two parts of the bracket.
