To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I. ADOLIH G. GARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of llli nois, have invented a new and useful Pocket- Recorder for Expense following is a specification.
This invention relates to pocket-recorders for expense accounts.
The object of the invention is to provide a pocket-recorder for expense or other accounts of traveling men or the like and which issimple in construction and efiicient in operation.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying'drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings and to the various views and reference-signs appearing thereon, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a register or recording device embod ying the principles of my invention. In keeping a record of expense or courts by traveling salesmen or the like it is exceedingly convenient to have a register or other acrecording device capable of being carried in the pocket and whereon may be registers and recorded not only the amounts expended, but also the purposes for which the expenditures are madethat is, it is frequently desirpense account. It frequently happens that a traveling salesman or other person keeping an expense account dislikes when in the presence of others to be seen entering items of expense on his expense account.

The type for these letters maybe arranged on the type Wheel or disk G in any convenient manner. In practice and as shown I propose to employ, say,t'wo type-letters in connection with each spiral row or group of type. Thus in the form shown the spiral row or group of 0s has associated therewith the letters S and T, the spiral row or group of numerals 1 has associated therewith the letters A and B, and so on, these letters being arranged to conform to the spiral character of the rows or groups of type. The pointer H,
which is mounted upon to rotate with the hub of the type disk or wheel G, is associated with adial-plate M,which, if desired and as shown,
may be mounted upon the outer face or surface of supporting-plate E. This dial-plate I propose to provide with graduations, marks, letters, and numerals corresponding with the type carried upon the inner face of the type wheel-or disk G. Thus, as shown in Fig. 1,
the pointer H has been actuated to point to one of the numerals 8, disclosed through the transparent dial B. When the pointer is in this position, the corresponding type 8 on the inner face of the type disk or wheel G V is brought into proper position to print or form a record therefrom, and when the pointer H is shifted or moved, as will presently be more fully explained, into register with any of the figures or letters of the dial M the type-wheel is simultaneously shifted or moved into position to bring the corresponding type of the inner face thereof into printing or recording position. The pointer H and type disk or wheel are rotated to the desired positions through the gears J and K, with the latter of which meshes a bevel-gear N, carried upon a sleeved stem 0, arranged to extend through the casing A, and upon which is mounted a bur or thumb portion P, by which said bevel-gear N may be actuated.
I propose to print the amounts registered so as to record the same and so as to make and retain a record of the various items and amounts registered on the device. To this end I propose to employ a record-sheet, which may be of any suitable or desired form. In one form shown the record-sheet R.(see Fig.
6);is in the form of a disk, and I arrange the same to be suitably supported within the easing so that the printing wheel or disk may be successively rotated or moved rotatively to bring any desired letter or figure into printing position relatively thereto, so as to print thereon the desired amount and also the character for indicating the object or purpose of the expenditure, and I propose to so mount the record sheet or disk that when one item and the amount thereof has been printed said sheet or disk may be shifted into position to receive the next item and amount. In order to accomplish these results and to efficiently clamp and hold the record strip or sheet and also to indicate theamount of the record disk or sheet which has been used so that the person operating the-device may see at a glance just how much of the record sheet or disk has been used up, I employ twodisks A B, (see Fig. 3,) and I mount the disk A upon a pin or stud O, arranged to extend through the hub F and upon the extended end of which is mounted a pointer D, arranged'to cooperate with a circular series of graduations upon the dial M. The record sheet or disk R is centrally perforated, as indicated at E, Fig. 6, to receive therethrough the inner end of stud C, and said record sheet or disk is designed to be clamped and held between the disks A B, preferably with a corresponding "sheet or disk F of carbon-paper, ink-ribbon, or other similar inking device, said carbon or ribbon sheet or disk lying next to the face or surface of the printing-wheel carrying the printing characters. The disk B is provided with an extended hub,'G, which is received within a barrel H, carried by the cover C of the casing, said disk being clamped or held in any convenient manner-as, for instance, by means of a rod or bolt J, so coupled or connected to the hub G as to permit slight relative movement of disk B toward and from disk A when these disks are brought together. A spring K, arranged to engage the end of hub G, serves to normally but yieldingly press the disk B toward and into clamping relation with respect to disk A to efficiently clamp and hold the record strip or disk R and carbon-paper or ink-ribbon F therebetween. If desired and in order to more efiiciently hold the record sheet or disk and the carbon or ink ribbon as well as to insure simultaneous rotative movement of disks A B, pins (indicated at L) carried by disk B arearranged to project through the carbon and record sheets and into disk A.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified form of carbon or ink strip or disk M, which is in the form of a-ring carried by a central stiffeningdisk N, through which a central opening P is formed to receive the inner end of stud C. It is believed that such a construction will be efficient Where an ink-ribbon is employed in place of a carbon disk, the central portion N forming a stiffening for the ring M of ink- BESS! AVAILABLE COP ribbon material to efficiently hold the same in ring shape.
After an entry has been printed on the recordsheet, as above indicated, the recordsheet is shifted so as to bring the same into proper position to receive the next entry. This shifting of the record-sheet may be offected in many different ways. I have shown a simple arrangement for accomplishing the result, to which, however, I do not desire to be limited or restricted, in which provision is made of means for shifting the record-sheet rotarily and wherein a ratchet wheel R is mounted upon the hub G of disk B to rotate therewith. Cooperating with ratchet-wheel R is a pawl S, spring-pressed into engagement with the ratchet-teeth of wheel Ras, for instance, by means of a spring T. (See Fig. 2.) The pawl S is pivotally mounted upon a sliding rod A mounted to slide in guides B C suitably mounted within the case A, and a spring D serves to yieldingly maintain rod-A in one limit of its movement. The free end of this rod is arranged to project into proximity to a plate or disk E carried upon a rod Ff, (see Fig. 3,) arranged to extend longitudinally through sleeve 0 and having its outer end connected to a thumb-piece G arranged to be telescoped over or upon a hub H of bur or thumb-piece P, as clearly shown. A spring J interposed between bur P and thumb-piece G serves to normally but yieldingly maintain thumb-piece G in raised position above bur P. ,By depressing thumbpiece G against the action of spring J rod F is projected downwardly, carrying disk or plate E downwardly to engage the end of rod A thereby projecting the latter against the action of spring D and in a direction to cause pawl S to move ratchetwheel R rotarily through any desired distancesay, for instance, through the distance corres 'ionding to one ratchet-tooth thereon. The rotati ve movement thus imparted to ratchet-disk R imparts a rotative movement to disks B A and a step of rotary displacement to the record-sheet and also a step of movement to pointer D, thereby not only presenting a fresh space or surface of the record-strip to receive the next entry to be recorded or printed thereon, but also through pointer I) and the grad nations associated therewith indicating the extent or amount of rotary displacement of the record strip or sheet.
The printing may be effected in many different ways. 1 have shown a simple construction and arrangement for accomplishing the desired result wherein a printing-platen K is carried upon the free end of a springyoke L suitably secured upon the-inner face of the cover 0. The printing-platen K is arranged opposite a convenient point of the side surface of the printing-disk which carries the printing characters L and in position for the record sheet or strip R, and the carhon-sheet or inkribbon F or M, as the case may be, to pass between the platen K and the surface of the printing-disk which carries the printing characters, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the printing operation is effected by deflecting the spring-yoke U, which carries the printing-platen against the spring action of the yoke, and then releasing the same, thereby delivering something in the nature of a hammer-blow upon the record-sheet and against the particular printing character lying opposite the platen K at the time of delivery of such blow. The platen K or rather the spring-yoke L supporting the same, may be deflected and released to accomplish the printing operation, or the delivery of the hammerblow above referred to may be accomplished in many different ways. form shown, to which my invention is not to be limited or restricted, the rod F carrying disk or plate E is mounted for rotary movement, being connected for this purpose to the thumb-piece G which is rotatively mounted upon the hub portion H of bur P, and on the under face of plate E is arranged a cam M designed, when said plate E is rotated, to engage the free end of yoke L and deflect or bend the same back against the spring action thereof until the point of the cam passes beyond the projecting end of the yoke L thereby releasing said yoke and permitting the spring action thereof to effect the ham mer-blow of the platen and the consequent recording of the printing character lying opposite thereto at the time such blow is delivered.
If desired and in order to indicate to the user of the device that the printing operation has been effected, a spring-pawl N may be provided and arranged for a shoulder 0 upon the free end thereof to engage a notch in the periphery of disk E the engagement of shoulder 0 in such notch resulting in a clicking noise as well as imposing a retarding effect upon the rotative movementof disk E there- -by informing the user that the printing operation has been effected and the hammerblow delivered by the n'inting-platen K lf desired and in order to insure the proper centering of the printing-disk G with 'reference to the point of application of the hammer-blow by the printing-platen K the periphery of the printing-disk G is provided with a series of notches P corresponding in number and relation to the various printing characters mounted upon the side face thereof, and a spring-pawl (indicated in dotted lines at E, Fig. l)cooperates with the notches P thereby centering or insuring the proper position of the several printing characters when brought opposite the point of application of the printing-platen K".

The cover 0 is then closed, thereby carrying the disk B into clamping relation against the disk A, thereby clamping the carbon or ink disk and the record disk or sheet therebetween and locking said disks A B to rotatively move together, the spring K securing a springclamping action ofdisk B against disk A to eflicientlyclamp therebetween the carbon or ribbon and the record disks or sheets. Now
suppose it is desired to register the amount of a hotel bill and that the letter H is used ing to the tenths denomination,
to designate the hotel bill. The bur P is retatively moved thereby through gears N, K, and .J, imparting rotative movement to the type or printing disk G and pointer H until the latter is brought opposite the letter H on the face of the dial-plate. This operation will bring the type character H on the printing-disk oppositethe point of application of the printing-platen K The thumb-piece G is now rotated, thereby causing cam M to engage the free end of spring-yoke L upon which printing-platen K is carried, and to deflect said spring-yoke until the cam releases the same, thereby permitting the spring action of said yoke to carry the printing-platen with a hammer-blow against the printing character H with the carbon orink ribbon and record sheets or disks therebetween, and hence effecting a record of the type character H on the record-sheet. Now suppose the hotel bill amounts to twenty-five dollars and forty cents. The bur P is again rotated until the pointer H registers with the outermost 2 of the group or spiral row of numerals 2 of the dial-plate. This action will bring the type character 2 on the face of the printing-disk opposite the printing-platen K and then the latter is actuated, as above explained, to effect a printing of the 2 on the recordstrip or sheet. The bur P is .next actuated to bring the pointer H opposite the numeral 5, corresponding to units denomination in the group or spiral row of the numeral 5 on the dial-plate, thereby correspondingly actuating tlie printing-disk G to bring the corresponding type character 5 opposite the printing-platen, when the above operation of effecting a printing of the same on the record strip or sheet is repeated. The dial-pointer H is again moved to register with the L in the group or row containing the numerals 4 of the disk-plate correspondwhen the printing operation above described is again repeated. The pointer H is now actuated to be brought into register with the 0 of the a fresh surface into printing relation with respect to the platen and the type wheel or disk. To accomplish this result, the thumb-piecet ar is depressed, thereby causing the under surface of plate E to impinge against the end of rod A thereby projecting said rod longitudinally to enable the pawl S thereon to rotatively move ratchet-wheel R, and hence imparting rotative movement for one step to disks B A and. to pointer D, thus not only bringing a fresh space of the record-strip into printing relation, but also indicating on the face of the dial-plate that the printing strip or disk has been rotatively actuated and the extent of such actuation. Now suppose the user desires to registerthe expenditure of ten cents for cigars. By employing the letters CG to designate cigars and ably manipulating the device, as above described,the'item and the amount will be printed upon the record sheet or disk in the same manner as above described. 7 As above indicated, the printing characters L upon the face of the printing wheel or disk are arranged. in groups, the members of each group being arranged in a spiral row, thereby enabling any member of any group to be brought into printing relation without aifecting the printing of any other member of such group when the printingoperation is accomof, a spring-actuated pawl B may be employed in association with ratchet-disk R (see Fig. 2) to lock or hold the same against reverse movement when actuated by its actuating-pawl S.

It will also be seen that the expenseaccount is kept accurately, and a record is made thereof, which may be retained and which itemizes the expenditures.
Having now set forth the object and nature of my invention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pocket recording device for expenseaccounts, comprising a casing, a printingwheel arranged therein and carrying type characters on the side face thereof, a recordsheet support also arranged within said casing and adjacent to the side face of the type-wheel, a spring-supported platen, means for successively positioning said printingwheel, and means for actuating said platen to deliver a hammer-blow upon the record-sheet to press the same into printing contact with the positioned characters on the side face of the printing-wheel.
2. A recording device for expense-accounts, comprising a casing, a printing-wheel journaled for axial rotation therein and carrying type characters on the face thereof, and means for rotatively moving said wheel to bring any desired type character on the face thereof into printing position, in combination with a record-sheet support arranged concentric with the axis of rotative movement of the printingwheel and adjacent the side surface thereof, a movable printing-platen, and means for operating the same to deliver a hammer-blow upon the record-sheet for taking an impression thereon from the positioned type characters on the printing-wheel.
3. A pocket recording device for expenseaccounts, comprising a casing, a printing wheel journaled therein for axial rotation and carrying ty pe characters on the side face thereof, a stationary dial-plate, a pointer connected to revolve with said type-wheel and cooperating with the dial-plate, a record-sheet supported within the casing and in concentric relation with respect to the axis of rotation of the printing-wheel and arranged adjacent the printing-face of said type-wheel, aspring-supported printing-platen, and means for actuating said platen to deliver a hammer-blow upon the record-sheet for printing from the type upon the type-wheel.
4. A pocket recording device for expenseaccou'nts, comprising a casing, a type-wheel mounted therein foraxial rotative movement and having type characters arranged in groups upon the side face thereof, a pointer mounted to rotate with said type-wheel, a dial-plate i 80 BESTAVAILABLE COP having characters corresponding in grouping arrangement to the type upon the face of said type-wheel and with which said pointer cooperates, a record-sheet support mounted concentric with the axis of rotative movement of the printing-wheel and arranged adjacent to theprinting sideface of said wheel, and means for pressing the record-sheet into printing relation with respect to the printing characters carried on the face of the type-wheel.
5. A pocket recording device for expenseaccounts, including a casing, a type-wheel journaled for rotative movement within said casing and carrying type characters arranged in groups, the members of each group of characters being arranged in staggered relation, a pointer connected to rotate with said typewheel, a dial-plate with which said pointer cooperates, said dial-plate bearing characters arranged in groups in staggered relation to correspond with the groups of type upon the type-wheel, a record-sheet support, means for a printing from the type characters upon said record-sheet support, and means for displacing said record-sheet.
6. A pocket recording device for expenseaccounts, including a casing, a type-wheel mounted therein for rotative movement and carrying type characters upon the side face thereof, a record-sheetsupport mounted within the casing and adjacent the type-carrying side face of said type-wheel and. adapted to support a recordsheet, a spring-mounted printing-platen, and means for operating said platen to effect a printing from the type of the type-wheel upon the record-sheet.
7. A pocket recording device for expenseaccounts, including a casing, a printing-wheel journaled therein for axial rotative movement and provided with type characters upon the side face thereof, a record sheet support mounted concentric with the axis of rotation of said printing-wheel and adjacent said printing-wheel, a movable platen to press the record-sheet into printing contact with the type upon said printing-wheel, means for rotatively moving said printing-wheel to position the printing-type thereon, means for rotatively displacing said record-sheet support, and for operating the printing-platen.
8. A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including a casing, a typewheel journaled for rotative movement within said casing, a record -sheet support, means for supporting the same within said casing and with the record-sheet in proximity to the type-wheel, a spring-mounted yoke independent of the record-sheet support, a platen carried thereby, the record-sheet being arranged between said platen and the type-wheel, and means for actuating said platen to press the recording-sheet into printing contact with the type on said printing-wheel.

ing-wheel carrying type and mounted for axial rotative movement within the-casing, a support for a record-sheet mounted for rotative movement upon an axis concentric with 'the printing-wheel and arranged adjacent thereto, means for successively positioning the printing-wheel to bring the desired type into printing relation with respect to the record-sheet, means for rotatively displacing said record-sheet support, and for pressing the record-sheet into printing contact with the positioned type on the type-wheel.
10. A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, includingacasing, a printing-whel journaled for rotative movement within the casing and carrying type characters, means for rotatively displacing said type-wheel to position the type thereonfor printing, a record-sheet support arranged within the casing and adjacent the type-wheel, means for displacing said record-sheet support relative to the type-wheel, a spring-supported platen,'and a cam for actuating said platen to deliver a hammer-blow upon the record-sheet to eflecta printing thereon from the type on the type-wheel.
11. A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including acasing, aprinting-wheel journaled therein for rotative movement and carrying type characters, a recordsheet supportarranged within the casing to hold a 'record sheet adjacent the path of type characters upon said printingwheel, means for rotatively actuatingsaid printingwheel to bring the desired type character successively into printing position with respect to the record-sheet, means for rotatively displacing the record-sheet support, a movable platen, said last-mentioned means actuating the platen to press the record-sheet into printing contact with said characters.
12. A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including a casing having a hinged cover, a printing-wheel journaled for rotative movement within said casing, means for supporting a record-sheet adjacent said wheel, a spring-mounted printing-platen supported upon the hinged cover of said casing, and means also carried by said hinged cover for clamping said record-sheet.

A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including a casing, a printing-wheel j ournaled therein for rotativemovementand carrying printing characters, means for rotatively actuating said printing-wheel, means for centering said wheel in adjusted position, a record-sheet support arranged adjacent the printing-wheel, means for moving said support relatively to the printing-wheel, and a printingplaten independent of said support, said moving means actuating the platen to press the record-sheet into printing relation with respect to the type-wheel.
14. A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including a casing, a print- =ing-wheel journaled therein for rotative move mentand carrying printing-characters, means for clamping and supporting a record-sheet within said casing, means for successively positioning the type-wheel, means for rotatively shifting'the record-sheet, a printing-platen independentof said clamping and supporting ,means, and means for actuating said platen to carry the record-sheet into printing relation with respect to the type upon the print- ,ing-wheel.

A pocket recording device for expense or other accounts, including a casing, a supporting-plate mounted therein, a printingwheel having a hub arranged to project through said supporting-plate for rotative movement in the bearing aiforded thereby, a pointer mounted upon the extended hub of said wheel, type characters carried by said wheel, a pin extending through the hub of said wheel, a clamp-plate mounted on said pin, a pointer also mounted on said pin, a coopcrating clamp-plate to clamp a record-sheet against said firstmentioned clamp-plate, a ratchet mounted upon the lastmentioned clamp-plate, means for operatingsaid ratchet wheel, means for rotatively displacing said type-wheel, and means for prcssin g the recordsheet into printing relation with respect to the type on the type-wheel.
