Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WATER-TUBE FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed May 3, 1904:. Serial No. 206,204.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM AMBLER, a subi ject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland,
and a resident of Bradford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tubes for Steam-Generators,` (for which I have filed an application for British Patent No. 15,1911, dated July 9, 1903;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to steam-generators and water-tubes therefor of that class wherein the tubes project from the water-chamber into the fire-chamber of the generator, and has for its main object to facilitate the liberation of steam and to improve the water circulation within such tubes and to obtain a consequent more economical utilization of fuel.
To this end the invention is characterized by the application to the water-tube of a division-plate so adapted as-to partition it longitudinally into under and upper compartments, which continue the one into the other at the closed end of the water-tube, where a sufficient space is left between the water-tube and division-plate for a free flow of the water, and as to cause the inlet to the under compartment from the water-chamber of the generator to be at a level lower than that of the outlet from the upper compartment to said water-chamber, so as to cause the under compartment to serve for the downflow from said water-chamber and such downiiow to be subjected to the greatest heat and the upper compartment to serve for the return or up current back to said water-chamber, and as to connect such-compartments at a plurality of places along the division-plate by inclined channels adapted to Jfacilitate the liberation of steam generated in the downiiow-compartment and its escape to the upflow-compartment, so as to maintain the water-body circulating through the compartment subjected to the greatest heat at practically the density of its inlet, and consequently at its highest heat conductivity, and at the same time to decrease the density of the water body circulating through the upiiow-compartment by the displacement eifected by the steam particles escaping thereinto, and so to improve the circulation.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a generator water-chamber iitted with inclined Watertubes adapted in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 represents an application of horizontal water-tubes so adapted. Fig. 3 represents an inner end elevation and a section of the water-tube represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents like views of the water-tube represented in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 represents different formations of the division-plate.
e represents the generator water-chamber, a a depending extensiontherefrom having a partition ft2, and b the water-tube which projects from said chamber or extension into the fire chamber. d represents said divisionplate, which may be flat or arched and is arranged diametrically ofthe water-tube, so as to partition the tube into under and upper compartments b 62, which continue the one into the other at the closed end b3. The inlet c from'the chamber a or its v extension to the compartment b is located at a level lower than that of the outlet f from the compartment b2 to such chamber or extension, so as to cause the compartment b to serve for the downcurrent and such current to be subjected to the most intense heat and the compartment b2 to serve for the upcurrent.
Throughout or for the greater part of its length the division-plate is adapted to connect the compartments b b2 at a plurality of places' by inclined channels d', having upper or under projecting parts or duc'ts Z2 adapted to intercept or lead any steam particles generated within the compartment b and conduct them to the compartment b2, whence they escape with the return-current, so as to free the downflow-water from such particles and leave the same in a denser condition of correspondingly higher heat conductivity, while lessening the density of the upflow-water.
What I claim is- 1. In a steam-generator, a water and steam chamber, a Water-tube projecting downward from the lower portion of the water and steam chamber closed at the outer end, a divisionplate extending downward from the mouth of the tube nearly to the closed end thereof dividing the water-tube into two chambers or passages communicating at the outer end, such division plate having orifices at intervals through the same forming communications between the two chambers, and also flanges projecting into the lower chamber or passage IOO In .testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
