To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIAN A. GILES, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to governors, and particularly to improvements in the type of flywheel governors wherein aweighted lever is pivotally mounted on a fly-wheel and is acted upon by the varying intensity of centrifugal force, due to different speeds of rotation, and by inertia, due to changes in speed, to govern or control the movement of mechanism for operating the valves or other similar devices of steam and gas engines and the like.
The object of my invention is to produce a governor of this class particularly adapted for use in connection with gas-engines, but not limited to such use, which shall be simple and eificient in its construction and operation, especially convenient for manufacture, and durable in use.
My invention consists in mounting a weighted lever on a fly-wheel upon a knife-edge, in arranging a single spring which shall both act against centrifugal force and hold said lever in position upon said knife-edge, in providing means for applying a uniform frictional resistance to oppose the movement of said lever, in providing means for adjusting the location of said spring, in distributing the material in said lever so that it is substantially in statical balance about the axis of the fly-wheel, and so that the tendency of the action of centrifugal force upon the governingweight to lift the knife-edge from its seat is counteracted by the action of centrifugal force upon other parts of the lever, and in other novel features of construction, to be hereinafter more fully pointed out and described.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a section on line (a a of Fig. 1.
The reference characters are used in the same sense in the drawings and the specification.
Numeral lrepresents a fly-wheel; 2 a stud, rigidly secured in an arm of the fly-wheel,
preferably at a point as near as convenient to the periphery of the fly-wheel. The stud 2 has a V-shaped groove 3 milled in it.
4 represents a lever mounted on the stud'2, having the straight portion 5 extending across nearest its fulcrum is made solid in order that its weight may counterbalance the weight of those parts of the lever on the other side of the center of the fly-wheel. A portion (indicated in dotted lines) is cored out for the purpose of providing a place where weights may be added to adjust the balance of the lever.
11 represents an eccentric-pin located at a distance from the fulcrum 2 of the lever substantially equal to the distance of the fulcrum from the center of the fly-wheel. The eccentric-pin 11 is also located so that when the lever is in its normal position the center of the pin is removed a short distanceequal to half the travel of the eccentricrodfrom the center line a a and on the opposite side thereof to the weight 7.
12 represents an eccentric-rod, the end of which engages the eccentric-pin 11.
13 represents a boss or hub upon the lever which is provided with the cylindrical bore 14, in which are received the spring 15 and the studs 16, which studs are pressed by the spring against the guides 18 and 19, so that the friction between the studs and the guides offers a uniform resistance to the oscillation of the lever.
20 represents a knife-edge, preferably of steel, firmly secured in the hub of the lever 4 and adapted to engage the V-shaped groove 3 of the stud 2. I
21 represents a cored recess or groove, which, with the side ribs 22, forms a T-shaped slot for the reception of the head 23 of the bolt 24. 25 is a nut on said bolt, by means of which said bolt is clamped in position.
26 is a spring mounted on the bolt 24, having one end in engagement with the washer 27 and the other with the adjustable dog 28, secured, by means of a set-screw, to the arms 8 of the lever 4, the bolt 24 passing between the two arms 8.
It will be seen that by means of this construction those parts of the lever 4 to the right 'of the center of the fly-wheel, as seen in Fig.
p tohold the knife-edge in its place in the V- shaped groove and to act upon said lever to" hold it in position against the banking-bolt 29 against the action of centrifugal force. It will also be seen that the action of centrifugal force upon the weight 7 tends to draw the knife-edge from its seat and that by counteracting this efl'ect by the weighted portion 9 of the other side of the lever this tendency may be avoided without in any way affecting the action of centrifugal force to turn the lever on its fulcrum, and thus adjust or govern the throw of the eccentric.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In agovernor, the combination with a flywheel, of a lever pivotally mounted on said flywheel, an eccentric-pin mounted in said lever, guides on either side of said lever fixed to said fly-wheel, a hole in said lever in line with said guides, studs in said hole engaging said guides anda spring between said studs.
2. In agovernor, the combination with a flywheel of a stud mounted in said fly-wheel, a lever mounted on said stud extending across the center of said flywheel, an eccentric mounted in said lever at a distance from its fulcrum substantially equal to the distance of said fulcrum from the center of said fly-wheel, said eccentric being normally eccentric to said fly-wheel, a weight secured to the end of said lever located off the line joining the centers of said fly-wheel and said stud and opposite to the center of said eccentric and a spring acting upon said arm to increase the eccentricity of said eccentric.
3. In agovernor, the combination with a flywheel of a stud mounted in said fly-wheel, a lever mounted on said stud extending across the center of said fly wheel, an eccentric mounted in said lever at a distance from its fulcrum substantially equal to the distance of said fulcrum from the center of said fly-wheel, said eccentric being normally eccentric to said fly-wheel, a weight secured to the end of said lever located off the line joining the centers of said fly-wheel and said stud and opposite to the center of said eccentric and a spring acting upon said arm to increase the eccentricity of said eccentric, and means for adjusting the position of said spring upon said arm. 1
4. In a governor the combination with a flywheel of a bell-crank pivoted to said fly-wheel having an arm substantially parallel to the rim of said fly-whecl, a spring acting upon said arm, a bolt engaging said spring and said fly-wheel and means for adjusting the position of said bolt and spring.
5. In agovernor, the combination with a flywheel, of a stud mounted in said fly-wheel, a lever mounted on said stud extending across and beyond the center of said fly-wheel, an eccentric-pin mounted in saidlever a distance from its fulcrum substantially equal to the distance of said fulcrum from the center of said fiy-wlieel, said eccentric-pin being normally eccentric to said fly-wheel, a weight secured to the end of said lever located off the line joining the centers of said fly-wheel and said stud and opposite to said eccentricpin, an arm joined to said lever extending from said fulcrum opposite to said weight and a spring acting on said arm to increase the eccentricity of said eccentric-pin.
6. In agovernor the combination with a flywheel of a bell-crank pivoted on said iiy-wheel, an arm substantially parallel to the rim of said fly-wheel, a spring acting against the inner side of said arm, a bolt having a nut thereon to adjustably secure the inner end of said spring and having its outer end adjustably secured in a groove in said fly-wheel.
7. 1n agovernor, the combination withafly- Wheel, of a stud mounted near the rim of said fly-wheel, a lever mounted on said stud extending across and beyond the center of said fly-wheel, having a weight on its end located ofl from the line joining the centers of said fly-wheel and said stud, an eccentric-pin in said lever on the opposite side ofsaid line, the distance from the fulcrum of said lever being substantially equal to the distance of said fulcrum from the center of said fly-wheel, an arm extending from said fulcrum substantially parallel to the rim of said wheel on the side opposite to said weight, and a spring acting outward radially on said arm.
8. In a governor, the combination with a flywheel, of a stud mounted near the rim of said fly-wheel, a lever mounted on said stud extending across and beyond the center of said fiy-wheel, having a weight on its end located off from the line joining the centers of said fly-Wheel and said stud, an eccentric-pin in said lever on the opposite side of said line, the distance from the fulcrum of said lever being substantially equal to the distance of said fulcrum from the center of said fly-wheel, an arm extending from said fulcrum substantially parallel to the rim of said wheel on the side opposite to said weight, a spring acting outward radially on said arm and means for adjusting the position of said spring.
9. In a governor the combination with a flywheel of a centrifugally-controlled lever pivotally mounted on said fly-wheel, an eccentric mounted in said lever, a spring acting on said lever against centrifugal force and means for adjusting the point of engagement of said spring upon said lever.
10. In a governor the combination with a fly-Wheel of a centrifugally-controlled lever pivotally mounted on said fly-Wheel, an eccentric mounted in said lever, a spring acting on said lever against centrifugal force and means for adjusting the point of engagement of said spring upon said lever, and means for IO adjusting the stress in said spring.
