ROBERT FRANCIS REAGAN, OF NEI/V BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 12, i905.
Application iled March l, 1905. Serial No. 247,846.
To all whom, if; Nur/y concern.-
Be itknown that LROBERT FRANCIS REAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cuspidors for use on ferry-boats and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide improved devices of this class which are countersunk in the iioor of the cabin or cabins and which may be closed whenever desired and which may be conveniently opened when necessary in order to discharge the contents thereof into the water.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a perspective inside view of a part of one of the cabins of a ferry-boat, a part of the overhang at one side of the ferryboat over which the cabin or cabins are placed and in the floor of which my improved cuspidors are located, and showing also the mechanism for closing the cuspidors and opening the same so as to discharge the contents thereof; and Fig. 2, an end view showing the parts in a different position in dotted lines.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication I have shown at a one of the side rails of the top of the hull 'of a ferry-boat, and at I) a seat or row of seats in one of the cabins and at the inner side thereof, and at o a part of the floor of the cabin, and in the practice of my invention form in the floor in front of the seat or seats b openingscl, three of which are shown, and these 'openings are rectangular in form and beneath the same are box-shaped receptacles cl2, having a bottom d3 hinged at the outer side, as shown at df.
The box-shaped receptacles d2 form the cuspidors proper, any desired number ofwhich may be employed, and each is provided with a cover comprising a slide CZ, and these covers are shown in full lines in an open position, and said covers are movable transversely of and beneath the apron b2 ofthe seat or seats b and said covers form a part of the floor c when in -position to close the cuspidors. Arranged longitudinally of and beneath the seats is a shaft or rod @,provided with downwardlydirected arms c2, which correspond in number with the cuspidors, and the arms @2 are hinged at their lower ends to the link members e3, and
said link members e3 are hinged to the inner ends of the slides or covers d5.
Connected with the bottom of the inner ends of the slides or covers d5 are cords or other flexible devices f, which are passed over pulleys f2 and connected with the inner ends of the bottoms d3 of the cuspidors, and in order to close the cuspidors all that is necessary is to turn` the shaft or rod CZ' to the right and the covers Z5 will be forced forwardly, and at the same time the bottoms ZSthereof will be allowed to drop downwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when it is desired to open the cuspidors the shaft or rod e is turned in the reverse direction and the partsassume the position shown in full lines and the cuspidors are open at the top, while the bottoms thereof are closed.
It will be understood that the shaft or rod e may be operated in any desired manner, but in lpractice the said shaft or rod is operated from one end thereof, and said shaft or rod may be operated in any desired manner and the cuspidors may be of any desired number, audit will also be apparent that this arrangement of cuspidors may be employed at both sides of the cabin or in any other suitable location.
By means of my improvement I provide a ferry-boat or similar vessel with cuspidors which are conveniently arranged in the bottom of the cabins and which may be open for use whenever necessary and closed whenever desired and the closing of which opens the bottoms of said cuspidors, whereby the con-- tents thereof may be dumped into the water, and it will be apparent that the use of my invention is not limited to ferry-boats and similar vessels, but the same may be employed on or in connection with cars or other vehicles, in the ooring of which the cuspidors would be located.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is-
A vessel or vehicle provided with a seat and the flooring of which in front of said seat is 'provided with an opening below which is a receptacle forming a cuspidor, said cuspidor being also provided with a hinged bottom and With a slidecover which is adapted to Vbe moved forwardly and backwardly be- IOO IIO
shaft or rod placed beneath the seat and probottom thereof, Substantially as shown and vided with a crank-arm which is in operative described.
connection with said cover, a pulley placed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I5 5 beneath said cover and a iexible cord conmy inventionI have signed my name, in presnected with the rear end of said cover and ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 27th with the free edge of the bottom of the cusday of February, 1905.
neath the seat and ilush with the lioorin'g, a l the cover to clos'e the cuspidor and open the l pidor whereby the movement of said shaft or g ROBERT FRANCIS REAGAN. rod in one direction will operate the cover to i Witnesses: IO open the cuspidor and close the bottorn thereof, and in the opposite direction will operate i JOSEPH A. REAGAN, F. A. STEWART.
