Be it known that I, HEINRICH FREISE, asubject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamme, near Bochum, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Flap for Closing the Lateral Openings ot' Dust-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

In order to prevent the escape of dust when emptying dust-boxes into dust-carts, the flaps which close the openings through which the boxes are emptied are so constructed that they are composed of a number of narrow slats, which close automatically and independently of each other. In order that the dust may not escape from the inside of the cart through the joints between the slats, the different slats require to be well tightened at the joints. This tightening was effected either by providing along the joints of the slats a row of bristles or a strip of cloth or by arranging behind the slats a folding curtain; but the bristles or strips of cloth are made hard and stiff by dirt and wet and soon detach themselves from the slats, so that the pendulous motion of the same is made very difficult or even impossible. The folding curtain in consequence of its own weight and that of the folds impedes the return movement of the slats in a high degree, a drawback which is still increased if the curtain after a time becomes stiifened by dust and dampness. These drawbacks are removed by the present invention, which consists therein that the longitudinal edges of the slats forming the closingflap enter into one another in a manner that in spite of the displacement of the slats with regard to each other caused by the shifting of the same on dust being put into the cart no dust can escape through the joints between the slats.

On the accompanying drawings the subject of the invention is illustrated in two dilferent forms of construction.

The openings through which the dust is thrown into the cart are closed by flaps composed of a number of narrow slats u, arranged in the usual manner side by side and moving around a common axis, being pressed by weight or a counterweight into the closing position. The tightening is effected by the slats themselves by their longitudinal edges 0 (Z engaging or overlapping each other. The longitudinal edges (Z are so shaped, Figs. 3, t, 5, 6, that the joint 0 forms in cross-section a broken way. The dust rising in the inside of the cart on being conveyed into it cannot escape to the outside, as .the longitudinal edges 0 (l I) closely lit each other. The tightening of the slats m in the closing position, Fig. 8, is effected by a frame covered with sail-cloth m. or the like, which is arranged behind all the slats of a group of slats and preferably fastened to the middle slat. In the form of construction, Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, the narrow, side-by-side-arranged, and automatically-closing slats, which are preferably wedge-shaped, have on one side in the required place the longitudinal edge 7), while on the other side there are provided two longitudinal edges 0 and (Z, which with the wedgeshaped form of the slats]; thus form a hollow space 6, decreasing in depth toward the top. A modification of this construction shows the middle and outer slats of the different groups of slats, Fig. 3, one or the other or all the longitudinal edges being dispensed with here.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is

1. In a flap for closing the lateral openings through which dust-carts are filled, the combination of a plurality of slats a arranged alongside one another, said slats a having overlapping longitudinal edges, substantially as described.

2. In a flap for closing the lateral openings of dust-carts, the combination of a plurality of slats arranged alongside one another, said slats having longitudinal projecting edges at both sides, and being so arranged that the longitudinal edge 6 along one side of a s-l-at 60 engages or enters between the longitudinal edges 0 and (Z of the neighboring slat a in such a manner that the slats a with the longitudinal edges 6 rest in their normal position against the longitudinal edge 0 of the neighboring slat, but on the flap being opened the edge 6 sits against the longitudinal edge cl, so that, when a dust-box f is being emptied into the cart, the slats a do not allow any dust to escape between the slats and the dust-box f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3'. In a flap for closing the lateral openings through which dust-carts are filled, the combination of a plurality of slats (6 arranged alon-gside'one another, said slats (4- having overlapping longitudinal edges, and a lid covering a number of slats, substantially as described.

4. In a flap for closing thelateral openings through which dust-carts are filled, the combination of a plurality of slats a arranged alongside one another, said slats (6 having overlapping longitudinal edges, and a lid, attached to the center slat.

5. In a flap for closing the lateral openings through which dust-carts are filled, the combination of a plurality of slats (4 arranged aldngside one another, said slats (4 having overlapping longitudinal edges, and a lid, consisting of a frame Z and a piece of sail-cloth m stretched thereon.

6. In a flap forclosing the lateral openings through which dust-carts are filled, the combination of a plurality of slats (0 arranged alongside-onean'othcr, said slats (6 having overlapping longitudinal edges, the empty space 6 or the space is which in the closed position remain between the longitudinal edges being wider from the middle of the flap toward the sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
