Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed November 21, 1904. Serial No. 233,721.
To (all u'hmn/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Uenn'ro DESAIX EznLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kimball, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Breast-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in breast-punms, the object of the same being to provide a device of this character by which the suckling of an infant may be closely simulated and the extracting action rendered more eflicient and natural and less liable to injure the secreting-glands and which may be conveniently operated by the patient or nurse or other attendant.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangementof parts, as hereinafterdescribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view of a breastpump embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, showing the normal and compressed positions of the nipple-manipulator in full and broken lines; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the nipple-manipulator detached.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a cupshaped applicator adapted to be applied to the gland and to snugly and easily lit the same. This applicator is preferably formed of rubher and is provided upon its convex side with an outwardly-projecting neck orsleeve 2, pre ferably of pyramidal form, and composed of rubher or other suitable elastic material. This neck or sleeve receives the outer end or throat 3 of an extracting-tube 4, which is connected at its outer end to an extractor 5. The throat 3 conforms in contour to the shape of the neck or sleeve 2that is, the said throat is substantially of pyramidal formso that its upper and lower sides will conform to the flare of the corresponding portions of the neck or sleeve 2 and extend parallel therewith in order to enable the nipple-manipulating device to be inserted for operation, as hereinafter described.
The extractor5 comprisesa pump-cylinder 6, having a tapered inner end 7, over which is litted the inner enlarged or flared end 8 of the extracting-tube a, thus detachably connecting the pump to said tube. in the cylinder 6 is a piston 9, which is provided with suitable packing to tightly lit the interior of said cylinder, and connected to said piston is a stem 10, projecting to the exterior through a plug or cap 11, closing the outer end of the cylinder, and provided at its outer end with a knob or linger-piece 12, whereby it may be operated to reciprocate the piston in the cylinder for extracting purposes. The stem 10 is screw-threzuled substantially throughout its entire length, and on the outer end of the stem is a stop-disk or head 13, having an internally-screw-threaded bore to it the threads on the stem and adapt said disk to be adjusted thereon to limit the inward movement of the piston. By the provision of this stop-disk the piston when drawn out to create a vacuum in the cylinder and extracting-tube to effect the extraction of milk from the gland may be locked or held immovable at the outer end of the cylinder by adjusting the stop-disk on the screw-threads of the stem until said disk abuts against the cap or plug 11 \Vhen the device is applied for use, it will be understood that the outward movement of the piston effects the extraction of the secretion, which maybe removed from the pump-cylinder by detaching the pump from the extracting-tube In order to render the extracting action more efficient and natural and less liable to injure the gland, a nipplc-manipulating device is provided, which may be operated simultaneously with the extractor to simulate as closely as possible the suckling action of the lips of the infant on the nipple. This device comprises a pair of lips or lingers 1a, which are disposed between the upper and lower flaring sides of theneck or sleeve 2 and the corresponding adjacent sides of the throat 3 and are formed with outwardly bent or divergent ends 15, which closely conform to the contour of the inner end of the neck orsleeve 2 at its junction with the cup 1 and are adapted to be moved toward and from one another to compress and release the nipple, and thereby simulate the natural action of the lips of the child. The lips or lingers extend rearwardly beyond the throat 3 and are connected to operating-levers 17, which extend at an outward angle or in divergent relation beyond the neck 2 on opposite sides of the extracting-tube & and terminate at their outer ends in linger-pieces 18, by which they may be compressed to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 2 to expand the lips or lingers. The
lips or fingers are normally retained in closed pos1t1on--that is, in the ad acent full-line position shown in Fig. 2 in wlnch they are IIO adapted to effect the compression of the nipple by the elasticity or resiliency of the upper and lower flaring sides of the pyramidal neck or sleeve 2, which also operate to maintain the levers in the divergent relation shown in said figure. The levers are provided at their forward ends with cars 19, which are connected by suitable pivot-pins 20, by which they are mounted to have relative swinging movement to operate the lips 1+L. \Vhcn the levers are pressed by the action of the fingers on the finger-pieces 18 to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 2, the lips 14 are forced apart and the sides of the neck or sleeve 2 expanded to accommodate this movement. This action of the fingers releases the nipple, as will be readily understood, and compression of the nipple is effected by releasing the levers, so that the lips will be retracted by the resilient action of the sides of the neck or sleeve in returning to their normal positions. By thus alternately compressing and releasing the levers the lips will be alternately expanded and contracted or closed together, so that the nipple will be compressed and released in a manner readily understood to simulate the natural action of the infant in extracting the fluid. I
In the operation of the device the cup or applicator l is applied to the gland and the lips expanded to engage the nipple, and simultaneonsly with the operation of the levers to force the lips apart the pump-piston 9 is operated to extract the fluid. This operation is continued until the cylinder 6 isfilled, whereupon the stop-disk 13 is adjusted on the piston-stem to hold the piston against inward movement. The pump may then be detached to discharge the extracted fluid, as will be readily understood.
In practice the pump-cylinder and piston may be made of vulcanite'fiber or of glass or of any other suitable material to serve the purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides an extracting apparatus which is simple of construction, eflicient in use, and capable of being readily cleansed and which further simulates the natural extracting action to a marked extent.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of an applicator, nipple-manipulating fingers, means for operating said fingers, and an extractor in communication with the applicator.
2. In a device of the character described, an applicator having an outwardly-extending neck or sleeve adapted to expand and contract, an extractor having a throat communieating therewith, nipple-manipulating fingers extending through the neck or sleeve into the applicator and adapted to be moved in one direction by the contraction of said neck, and means for operating said fingers in the reverse direction and expanding the neck for subsequent reverse operation of the lips or fingers.
3. In a device of the character described, an applicator having a resilient neck or sleeve, an extracting device having a throat entering said sleeve, nipple-manipulating fingers extending between said throat and sleeve and adapted to be normally held in compressed position by the contraction of the sleeve, and pivoted levers for expanding said fingers and neck.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, an applicator, an extracting device communicating therewith, fingers associated with the applicator, means for manually operating said fingers in one direction, and means for automatically operating the fingers in the opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
UBER-TO DESAIX EZELL.
