Description

N0. 798,853. PATBNTED SEPT. 5, 1905. F. R. WELSH.
MEMORANDUM ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 8. 1905.
FRANK R. \VELSH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MEMORANDUM ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed June 8, 1905. Serial No. 264,207.
10 rt/t ur/mm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK 1t. Ynnsn, acitizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum A ttaehments for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a memorandum attachment for telephones; and in such connection it relates particularly to means for removably securing the memorandum or scratch pad to the attachment and to means for securing the latter to the standard of a desk-telephone.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a desktelephone and its receiver and illustrating in end elevation a memorandum attachment secured to and held by the standard of a transmitter in an inclined position with respect thereto embodying main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the telephone-standard and illustrating in top or plan view the pad held in position on the attachment and the manner of securing the latter to the standard thereof. Fig. 3 is a side clevational view of the attachment and pad and the lower portion of the telephonestandard shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an enlarged view of the under side of the attachment removed from the telephone-standard, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line .r I' of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, with special re ference to Figs. 3 and A, 11 represents the attachment, consisting of an oblong and rectangular frame a, strengthened by bars 1/ and preferably slightly curved with respect to its longitudinal axis. A t the upper end the frame a. is provided with downwardlyprojecting wings 1/ and a, substantially triangular in outline, one of which, a", is provided with a lateral extension It, having a curved depression 1/. Preferably adjacent to the lower edge of the wings a and a and passing through the extension is slidably arranged a bailshaped holder Z), the semicircular bent end 7/ of which is arranged opposite the projection 0" of the wings 0 The threaded portions 11 of the arms 7f and b" of the holder are provided beyond the wing a l with tighteningnuts 71", which by engaging the wing a serve to force the bent end 6 of the holder 7/ toward the projection of the wing (1. In order to connect the frame a to the standard A of the transmitter of the telephone A, the bail-shapcd holder 7) is first withdrawn from the wings a and It and the extension u and is placed around the standard A. The arms 6" and I) of the holder 7) are then reinserted in the wings and the frame a is shifted toward the standard A until the depression a of the extension (1 is brought into engagement with the standard. The tightening-nuts l)" by being placed on the threaded ends I) of the arms 6* and 7) and bearing against the wing it serve to move the bent end 7; of the holder and the projection (i of the frame a toward each other and to bring the depression a of the extension 11" into engagement with the standard A. The bent end 7/ and projection a, engaging the standard A from opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 2, serve to cooperate in the support of the frame a by the standard and. are locked to the same by the nuts 6'. Owing to the substantially triangular-shaped outline of the wings I) and 7)" and the location of the arms 7' and l) of the holder (1 therein, the frame 1/ is held by the same in an inclined position with respect to the standard A, as shown in Fig. 3, and project therefrom sidcwise as well as in front of the standard A, so as to permit of the free use of a menmrandum-pad c, placed on the frame a, as shown in Fig. 2. The slightlycurved outline of the frame a will assist in rendering the use of the mclnoranduni-pad c more comfortable to an operator. The pad (1 may be held in any required position on the standard A. However, the most suitable position of the frame 1/ is slightly above the base A of the same, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One mode of removably securing the memorandum-pad c to the frame a is as follows:
As shown in Fig. 5, preferably engaging the wings a" and a and slightly below the frame a is arranged a wire or holder [1, the ends (1 of which are bentupnardly and then parallel to the frame a, so as to form U-shaped grippingarms for the memorandumpad c, which is slid with its pasteboard support a between the arms (l and frame 11, as shown in Fig. 3. The gripping-arms (7 by engaging the pasteboard support 0 from opposite sides and near the upper end of the same hold the pad 0 securely on the frame a and prevent displacement of the same. Instead ofusing a wire or rod 1 with bent ends (1 each of the ends (Z may be independently secured to'the frame a, or the rod (Z may be directly passed through the frame instead of through the wings a and (4*.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a telephone, of a memorandum attachment, consisting of a frame or support having downward-projecting wings, abail-shaped holder sliding with its arms in said wings and adapted to surround with its bent end a standard to support the frame, a padhaving a support and a holder having arms adapted to engage the pad-support to hold the same in position on said frame.
2. The combination with a telephone, of a memorandum attachment, consisting of a frame or support having downwardly-projecting wings of substantially triangular outline, a bail-shaped holder slidable with its arms in said wings and the bent end of said holder adapted to engage a standard to support said frame in an oblique position with respect thereto, a pad having a support and a holder carried by said frame having arms adapted to engage the pad-support, and to hold the same in position on said frame.
3. The combination with a telephone, of a memorandum attachment, consisting of a rigid and slightly-curved frame or support, wings of substantially triangular outline arranged at one end of said frame and downwardly projecting therefrom, an extension having a depression, said extension laterally projecting from one of said wings, a bail-shaped holder, the arms of which are slidably arranged in said wings adjacent to the lower edge thereof and passing through said extension, the semicircular end of said holder and the depression of said extension forming combined an opening of substantially annular outline and permitting said end and extension to partially surround and to engage the standard of said telephone, and said holder, wings and extension adapted to hold said frame in a substantially oblique position with respect thereto, means adapted to lock said holder and extension to said standard by engaging the free ends of said holder and one of the wings of said frame, apad and a rod arranged in said wings having bent ends forminggrippingarms adapted to slidably engage said pad and to hold the same in a removable position on said frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK R. WELSH.
