IMPROVEMENT IN CLOSING VULGANIZING FLASKS.
itin Scintille rrfemr tu iu time' trttm'zxtent tut making im ai ttt stmt.
Be it. known that I, HORACE M. EDSON, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox, und State of Ohio, have invented a, newand useful Improvement in the Machinery for Closing the Flasks Inside of a. Vulcunizer; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the'nnnexed drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention Aconsists ofi First, a. screw, a, of brass, orother suitable metal, screwed down into en ordinary vulcsnizer, through a. nut, b, forming part of the top of the vulcanizer c c.
Second, a steam-tight packing-box, d, with a. thread in the upper part of the sume to t the screw o, and through which the screw d posses before entering the' nut b iu the top of' vulcanizer. In the centre ofthe box d the diameterof thel opening is increased suhcient toadrnit the packing between the nut and the screw a, und the opening in the lower 'end of the box d is made of sucient diameter to' screw down over a. hollow screw rising up from around the opening in the nut in the top of the vulcanizer.
Third, a. concave button, e, with u iict rin'i7 and having o hole in the centre, is fitted, with the concave side down, on the point of the serevvja, turned down and made round, und with a shoulder, 7L, and is kept on by :t pin through the 4end ofthe screw a, below the button. The riui z' of' the button rests upon the upper flaskf, and will remein stationaryrwhile' closing the fiasks ff, by turning the screw a.
By means ofthe above-described machinery, the l'lesks containing the rubber or other vulcnnizing substance can be placed in the vulcnnizer in cold n'nter, and when the hout is applied, the steam-tight packing-box d prevents the steam from escaping around the screw a, and, by turning the screw a down upon the nsks, the flasks can be closed inside ofthe v'ulcanizer; nt will, et any time, linside of the vulcanizing point, after the rubber or other vuleaniziug-meterial becomes soft enough to admit of the elosin,r ofthe flasks, and the process of vulcanizing the rubber or other material in the flasks will go on without interruption or delay from the beginning to the completion of the process.
OZaz'm.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Potent, is-
The screw, of brass or other suitable metal, which, Ascrewed down through n nut in the top of n vulcanizer, will close the asks inside of the vulcenizer, as above described, and the steam-tight packing-bog; around the screw, to prevent the steam from escaping from the vuleanizer during the process of vulccnizing 4MAY 22, 1867.
HORACE M. EDSON.
