Be it known that I, ROBERT WooDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ticket-Punches, oi' which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hand-punches for punching tickets and such like, and it is more especially intended for such punches as are also adapted to automatically register or record each use and operation of the punch.

The object of this invention is to enable the punching mechanism, as well as the registering or recording mechanism, if the punch is provided with such, to be locked or made fast, as it were, against accidental movement and to be readily released for movement and operation.

The invention consists in the combination with and the application to the working jaws or handles of the punch oi' a button or head which is applied to one jaw or handle or' the punch so as to be rotated thereon and has its periphery so shaped that when the button is turned in one direction its said periphery will abut against the other jaw or handle, and thus fasten or lock the jaws and handles against movement, and that when the button is turned in the other direction its said periphery will be placed out of its said abut,- ment, and thus leave the jaws or handles free to be operated; and, again, the invention consists in combination with "the above of an adaptation of said rotary button or head and oi' the jaw or handle to which it is applied, whereby when out oi' its said position of abutment or locking it will be so engaged with or locked to said jaw or handle as to secure it against accidental displacement or movement, all substantially as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying plate of drawings the present invention is illustrated.

Figure l is a face or side view of a hand ticket-punch of the class to which this invention is applicable. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are enlarged views in detail of special parts making up this invention, as hereinbefore set forth.

In the drawings, A and B are the two handles of the hand ticket-punch. These handles are pivoted at C and constitute the two opposing jaws D E, having respectively the male and female parts of the punch proper (not shown) and by which on pressing the handles toward each other against their returning-spring F the ticket or card placed within the receiving slit or way t of the handle A therefor is punched, each operation of the punch being registered or recorded by mechanism (not shown) contained in the shell or casing G on the handle A and which is operated by mechanism consisting of a crank-arm H on the axle-pin Iof the recording mechanism and an arm or link J, pivoted at one end to the crank H and at the other end by its slot K to the headed pin L of the handle B.

M is a button or head preferably having a milled edge for the better turning ot' it, as hereinafter appears. This button is arranged to rotate or turn on or about a headed pivot or stud N of the handle B and which is screwed into said handle, and thereby the button is attached to and held on it.

The button M projects from the exposed. face or side B2 of the handle B, which is near to the portion A2 oi' the handle A, that passes over it in the closing and opening movements oi the handles. The button M at its part next to the face B2 of the handle B has an edge Q Q2 in one part Q circular or arc-shaped and in the other part Q2 straight and joining the opposite ends otl the circular part Q, or, in other words, constituting the chord or' the arc of the circular part, and which arc prei'- erably is concentric with the axis of the stud N. It' the button is turned on its stud N so as to present its circular part Q toward the portion A2 of the handle A, the button then by such part Q prevents the handles from being closed together or moved toward each other, and so fastens or locks them against movement, and thus locks the punching and registering mechanisms against working or operation, and if the button is turned or rotated on its stud N so as to place the circular part Q of the stud out of the path of movement of the portion A2 of the handle A over the face B2 of thehandle B, or, in other words, in the position as shown in Fig. 1, then the handles can be moved and operated for punching and registering as desired, the handle A by its portion A2 then passing by said straight part Q2 of the button W.

It is desirable when the button M is in position to permit the punch to be operated that it (the button) should be made secure against accidental displacement, and for that purpose the contact or bearing face R of the button on the face B2 of the handle B is provided with a raised rib S of wedge shape in crosssection to engage with a correspondinglyshaped groove T of the handle B, and this engagement is insured by the action ot' a spiral spring U surrounding the stud N and inclosed within the button M and conned end to end therein between the shoulder V of the button M and the shoulder W of the headed stud N.

The yielding of the spring U allows the button M to be turned to fasten or look and to unfasten or unlock the handles A and B, as has been hereinbefore explained.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. In a hand ticket-punch, the combination with its handles or jaws, of a button or head secured to and free to be turned or rotated on one of said handles or jaws and having a periphery or edge that is shaped, in one po'- sition of the button or head to abut against the other handle or jaw and in another position of the button or head to be out of such abutment, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

2. In a hand ticket-punch, the combination with its handles or jaws, of a button or head secured to and free to be turned or rotated on one of said handles or jaws and having a periphery or edge that is shaped, in one position of the button or head to abut against the other handle or jaw and in another position of the button or head to be out of such abutment, and of means, in the latter position of the button or head to lock or fasten the button or head to the handle or jaw to which it is attached and to allow it to be unlocked or unfastened, substantially as described, for for the purposes specied.
