Patented Aug. '15, 1905.
Application filed April 22, 1905. Serial No. 256,959-
To (LZZ whom/ it nuty con/corn:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WILBUR MINOR, a citizen of the United Estates, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Boxes for Use in Making Concrete or Cement Building-Blocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for making concrete building-blocks; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which may be readily adjusted for molding blocks of various sizes; and it consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a partof this application, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my moldbox, showing sections of the side partially removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a tamping-guide resting upon the mold and showing the plungers for compressing the blocks, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the adjustment of the parts for punching holes through the blocks.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter,,A designates the bottom of the mold, which is solid, and lhl B designate the ends of the mold, which ends are made up of interchangeable sections which have tongueend-grooved connections one with another, and designates the two opposite longitudinal sides, which are also made up of sectional pieces similar to those designated by letter B, with the exception that the lower ends of the strips C have tongues D upon the lower edges which fit in the grooves E, formed in the upper longitudinal edges of the strips F. The strips H are held to the outer faces of the longitudinal sides by means of elongated bolts N, which pass through the end pieces O of the sides of the mold.
As observed in llTig. 1 of the drawings, a plurality of the sections of the mold are shown as partially withdrawn, leaving apertures Q, through which the punchers R may be passed for the purpose of forming a hole through the concrete blocks. Said punchers R, which conform to the shape of the apertures Q, arefastened to a cross-piece J, having a plungerrod J secured thereto and which may be operated in any suitable manner. (Not illustrated.)
Referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, a cover will be seen which is adapted to fit over the open end of the mold and is provided with recesses W along its marginal edges to allow the sections, which are designated in the draw ings by letter I, to be readily withdrawn for the reception of the punchers R. lit will be observed that sections of the longitudinal sides of the mold opposite each other are withdrawn to allow the punch to pass entirely through the mold.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, will be seen the tamping-blocks M, each of which is secured to a post M, to which a cross-piece S is fastened by means of screws S, and a plunger-beam S is fastened to said crosspiece, whereby the latter may be raised and lowered. A suitable rectangular-outlined boxing X rests upon the upper edge of the mold and has chutes X therein, into which the material is placed within the mold.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of my improved apparatus a simple and eflicient means is provided for making building-blocks of various sizes and in which the blocks may be readily formed into proper shape and after which by turning the mold upon the side and withdrawing certain sections of the longitudinal sides, as illustrated in Fig. 3, apertures may be readily punched through the blocks.
While I have shown a particular form of apparatus illustrating my invention, .it will be understood that I may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A mold for building-blocks made up of a series of interchangeable tongue-and-grooved sides and ends, means for holding the same together, a tamping member for compressing the material in the mold, and a guide for said tamping member, as set forth.
2. A mold for building blocks made up of a series of interchangeable tongue-and-grooved sides and ends, means for holding the same together, a tamping member for compressing the material in the mold, a guide for said tamping member, opposite portions of the sides of the mold adapted to be partially Withdrawn, and a punch adapted to be passed through said opposite apertures for forming a hole through said block, asset forth.
3. A mold for building-blocks made up of a series of interchangeable tongue-and-grooved sides and ends, means for holding the same together, a tamping member for compressing the material in the mold, a guide for said tamping member, opposite portions of the sides of the mold adapted to be partially Withdrawn, a punch adapted to be passed through said opposite apertures for forming a hole through said block, and a cover for the mold provided With oppositely-disposed recesses in the edges thereof in which the removable sections of the mold are adapted to be guided, as set forth.
4:. Arnold for making building-blocks made.
up of interchangeable tongue-and-grooved sections, a tamping member, a guide for said tamping member adapted to rest upon the edge of the mold and provided with chutes in the side thereof, as set forth.
5. Amold for making building-blocks comprising a solid bottom and opposite longitudinal sides made of tongue-and-grooved sections, the lower end of each of said sections having a tongue adapted to fit in a groove in the side of said mold, portions of said mold adapted to be Withdrawn to form oppositelydisposed apertures in the sides of the mold, and a punch adapted to be forced through said oppositely-disposed apertures for making a hole in the block, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
