Be it known that I, MARIA DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunlap, in the county of IIarrison and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yoke Pole Attachments, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in neck-yoke pole attachments, and aims to provide a simple and effective connection or attachment for neek-yokes to insure the easy and permanent attachment of the neck-yoke, as well as the removal thereof from the vehicle-pole.
lhe invention further aims to provide :means for detachably connecting the neckyoke to the vehicle-pole which will be easily operable and eificient in its use, economical in the construction thereof, and inexpensive in the manufacture.
1W ith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more speeiieally described, and illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, which form a part of this specilieation, and wherein I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention; but it is to be understood that I may make such changes, variations, and modilieations as come properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming' a part of the specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the vehiclepole and the neck-yoke attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the vehiclepole and the neck-yoke attachment. Fig. 3 is an end View of the attachment.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a vehicle-pole, which may be of the ordinary type, and 2 a sleeve of malleable iron or analogous material, which forms a socket and so shaped to lit over the end of the vehicle-pole 1. Said sleeve 2 is provided at its outer end with an enlarged portion 3, the same being recessed, as at 4, to receive a coiled spring 5, one end of which is secured by a suitable fastening' 6 to the front end of the inner wall of the recess 4 and the other end connected by a fastening 7 to a slidable bolt 8, which is mounted in the opening` 9, extending entirely through the enlarged portion 3, the latter eX- tending longitudinally with respect to the sleeve 2. Said bolt 8 is provided with a handgrip-lO, serving' as a handle to operate the said bolt 8. Furthermore, said grip 10, being larger than the opening 9, acts as a stop to limit the inner movement of the bolt 8.
Situated a distance from the enlarged portion 3 of the sleeve 2 is a projection 11, having a recess 12 to receive the inner end of the bolt 8. Said projection 11 and enlarged portion 3 are separated to provide space for allowing' the free insertion of a yoke-ring' 13 therebetween. The sleeve 2 may be secured to the vehicle-pole 1 in any suitable manner, though for convenience I have shown the same secured by bolts 14, said coiled spring 5 normally holding the sliding bolt 8 in engagement with the recess 12, thereby retaining the yoke-ring 13 between the enlarged portion 3 and the projection 11 when the said yoke-ring 13 is in position.
To secure the yoke-ring 13 to the vehiclepole 1, the operator grasps the hand-grip 10 at the forward end of the sleeve 2, pulling outwardly, thereby causing the bolt 8 to move outwardly and compress the spring 5 and withdrawing the end of the said bolt 8 from the recess 12 in the projection 11, allowing the free insertion of the yoke-ring 13 in the space between the projection 11 and the enlarged portion 3 of the sleeve 2, and as the bolt 8 is released the spring' 5 expands, causing the inner end of the bolt 8 to enter the recess 12 in the projection 11, thereby coupling the yoke-ring' 13 to the pole.
lVhen it is desired to uneouple the yokering 13, the operator grasps the hand-grip 10, giving an outward pull on the bolt 8, causing the same to slide out of the recess 12 in the projection 11, thus opening' the space between the enlarged portion 3 and the projection 11, allowing1 the removal of the neck-yoke 13 therefrom, and by releasing the hold on the grip 10 the bolt 8 assumes its normal closed position.
I have provided at the forward end of the enlarged portion 3 of the sleeve 2 an extension 15, also the projection 11 is extended, as at 16, to protrude beyond the enlarged portion 3, so as to protect the same from being' injured as the pole 1 is being lowered to the ground and to maintain the said pole 1 in an elevated position to 'prevent dust or dirt entering' into the interior of the enlarged portion 3 of the sleeve 2. The sleeve 2 is secured to the pole 1, so as to have the extensions l5 and 16 at the under side thereof.
lt is evident that by having the enlarged portion 3 for supporting the spring' and the sliding' bolt 8 at the forward end or' the socket 2 allows the operator to more easily couple oluncouple the yoke-ring 13 from the vehiclepole l and by the parts being' in such position affords the operator a position to more quickly couple or uncouple the yoke-ring 13, giving full leverage to the voutward pull of the sliding' bolt 8 at the forward free end of the vehicle-pole l.

An attachment for vehicle-poles comprising a sleeve terminating rearwardly in an upper and lower extension, arranged in parallelism to engage the pole, an enlargement carried by the lower extension and at the outer end thereof, a spring-controlled pin carried by said enlargement and projecting from each end thereof, the outer end of said pin provided With a head, said extension provided with a projection at the rear of said enlargement, having a rest to receive the inner end of the pin, and a projection on the enlargement forming a rest when the pole is lowered.
