Bo it known that I, JOHN A. Lirrnia'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bul:- ialo, in the county oil" Erie and State o'll N ew York., have invented certain new and use'lul Improvements in Metal Railway-Ties; and l do hereby declare the following to be a ilull, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to iigures oi reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification. My invention. relates to improvements in nietal railway-ties, its object being to provide a construction. which will. involve a inininnun of material and which will at the saine time possess the requisite structural rigidity, provision at the saine time being niade in such construction wherebyr the tainping oll the tie in the iroadebed is rendered. both expeditious and ei'liective and a centerbound track is ei'itirely avoided.

To Athese ends my invention consists oll a tie having a top bearingplate upon `which. the track-rails rest and are secured, a bottoni base-plate, a vertical. web connecting the bearing-plate and baseplate, centrallyarranged between the saine, and oppositelyarranged strengthening and guiding wings extending up from each end o'lE the base-plate.

My invention further consists o'll a tie having a top bearing-plate upon which the trackrails rest and are secured, such bearing-plate having a narrowed central portion, a bottoni base-plate having a narrowed central portion, and a vertical. web connecting the bearing-plate and base-plate, centrally arranged. between the saine. m

.Referring to the drawings, Il is the top bearing-plate, upon which the track-rails rest and are secured. rlhis plate has the narrowed central section 2.

The entire tie is rolled from one piece ot inetal, the wings 5 being turned up and the central sections oi: the bearing plate and base-plate being .inirrowed by cutting away portions ot the saine.

The functions ot the wings 5 are twofold. First, they strengthen the tie directly under the points ol` greatest pressure, and, second, they serve as guides to direct the tainping tool under the tie, and thus greatly expedite the taniping operation.

This objection is overcoine with niy iinproved ilieature of narrowing the central portions of the tie, which enables such portions to be forced down into the road-bed unilorrnly with the sinking olf the ends, thereby avoiding any unequal strains upon the tie throughout its entire length and preventing what is coinnionly known. as a centerbound track.
