Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS J. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Railway-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal railwayties, and has for its object to improve the con struction and increase the efficiency of de vices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention con sists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical op eration, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention within the scope of the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tie applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail, enlarged, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section, enlarged, on the line 4.- 4 of Fig. 2.
The improved device comprises a body portion of the usual length of'a railway-tie, and formed with a vertical web 10, lower lateral flanges 1]. l2, and upper lateral flanges 13 1.4, and reinforced beneath the points where the rails 15 16 cross the tie by enlargements, as at 17 18, these parts all being in one piece, preferably of cast steel or other suitable metal.
Formed transversely in the upper face of the tie at the points where the rails 15 16 are to cross are cavities 19 20, having dovetailed or undercut sides, and disposed in these cavities are filler-blocks 21 22, of wood or like material, the edges of the blocks being dovetailed to correspond to the dovetailed sides of the cavities. The rails bear upon these filler-blocks which are slightly wider than the rails, so that the latter do not contact directly with the body of the tie at any point. The reinforcing portions 17 likewise serve effectually as braces between the vertical web 10 and the horizontal upper flange 14, and very materially strengthen and stiffen the structure without adding materially to the expense or weight. The reinforcing and strengthening come where the greatest strains occur.
Tapped into the body of the rail adjacent to the cavities 19 are clamp-screws 24, having flanged heads 25 for bearing over the tie-flanges of the rails 15 16 and with wrenchreceiving portions 26 above the flanged heads.
The flanged heads being circular can be rotated over the tie-flanges of the rails and bear with equal force at any part of their surface and hold the rails very firmly. This form of clamp-bolt also provides ready means for tightening when the parts become loosened by the jarring of the trains. By this means the filler-blocks receive the impact and concussions imparted by the rolling-stock and prevent the same being communicated directly to the rails. The filler-blocks when worn or broken can be readily replaced by new blocks by merely loosening the clamp-bolts, driving out the worn blocks, driving in new blocks, and then tightening the clamp-screws.
The central portion of the tie is reduced in height and width at the upper part, as at 28, to provide for receiving the tamping and ballast, to assist in holding the tie in position. Apertures 27 are formed in the webs and flanges at various pointsto receive the point of a pick or other implement to facilitate the handling of the tie.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A metal railway-tie consisting of a horizontal plate having a central vertical web and reinforced where the rails cross the same by increasing the thickness of the plate and bracing the web transversely, said thickened portion having a transverse recess open at the ends, fillerblocks of yieldable material disposed in said recesses and removable endwise therefrom, and clamp-bolts in said thickened portion and having laterally-projecting heads for extending over the tie-flanges of the rails bearing upon said blocks.
