UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EARL H. RICHARDSON, OF ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO PACIFIC ELECTRIC HEATING COMPANY, OF ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPO- RATION OF CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION FLAT-IRON AND STOVE.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed December 19, 1904. Serial No. 237,411.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL H. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ontario, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Flat-Iron and Stove, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of this invention is to provide an electric flat-iron with means whereby it may be adapted for use as a stove by suitably supporting the iron in a manner hereinafter set forth, so that the face which is lowermost and which acts as the heating-face of the iron can be presented upwardly, so as to serve as a support and heating-face for certain purposesfor example, in heating or warming small quantities of water or other liquid.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combination iron and stove, showing it in position for use as a stove or heater. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the stand or holder, the iron having been removed therefrom.
1 designates an electric laund ry-iron or flatiron provided interiorly with any usual or suitable electric heating means (not shown) and eXteriorly with the handle 2 and connecting devices 3 for receiving and engaging the removable connecting plug 1, having the usual flexible electric connections or leading wires 5. The handle 2 may be of the usual shape, being desirably round in cross-section and of suitable material, such as wood, and is connected to the body member 7 of the iron by suitable means, such as arms 8 9, on a bar connected rigidly to the said body member. The iron so described is preferably supported either by resting on its heating-sole or heatingface 10, which is in operation the lower face, or by resting edgewise or endwise on suitable faces 11, formed on the plug-engaging means 3, before referred to. For purpose of the present invention means are provided for supporting the iron in inverted position with the aforesaid face 10 uppermost and horizontal, and to this end I provide a support holder or stand 12, having means to engage with the iron, and preferably with the handle thereof,
to support it in such a position. Said holder or stand may consist of a bar or frame 13, having legs 14 spreading sufliciently to give the requisite basis of support and said bar having upturned projections 15 to receive and engage the handle 2 of the iron and an upturned arm 16, having a seat or fork 17 to receive and engage one of the handle-arms 8 of the iron. The projections 15 are upwardly divergent on the inner faces, so as to form flaring seats to fit different sizes of handles, and the fork 17 is flaring or divergent, so as to tightly engage diflerent sizes of handlearms. The shape of this stand or holder may, however, be varied without departing from my invention.
The iron may be used in the ordinary manner as an iron by grasping the handle 2. WVhen it is desired to use it as a stove, it is inverted, the flaring seats between projections 15 receiving the handle to support the iron and the flaring fork 17 engaging a handle-arm 8 to hold the iron in true inverted position and prevent it from tilting to either side.
What I claim is 1. In combination with an electric iron having a heating-sole, supporting means for supporting the iron in inverted position, with its sole uppermost and substantially horizontal, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with an electric iron having a heating-sole, a stand having parts engaging the iron for supporting the iron in inverted position, with its sole uppermost and substantially horizontal, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with an electric iron, having a handle, a stand having parts engaging the handle of the iron to holdthe iron in inverted position.
1. In combination with an electric iron, having a handle and arms connecting the handle with the iron-body, a stand having projections to engage the handle of the iron, and having an upwardly-extending arm with a seat to engage one of said arms.
5. A stand for holding an iron in inverted position for use as a stove, comprising a frame having seats to engage the handle of the iron and a fork to engage a handle-arm of the iron.
6. A stand for holding an iron in inverted l my hand, at Los Angeles, California, this 13th position for use as a stove, comprising; a 1 day of December, 19%.
frame having seats to en 'age the handle of the iron and a fork to engaize a handle-arm of EARL RHJHARDSON' the iron, said seats and fork flaring to adapt In presence of them to different sizes of handle. ARTHUR P. KNIGHT,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set FREDERICK S. LYON.
